The immeasurable depths of God 그러므로 하느님께 대한 최고의 지식은 논쟁을 통해서 찾지 말고 선행의 완성으로 찾으십시오. 유식한 불신앙의 추측이 내는 말을 통해서 찾지 말고 마음의 단순성에서 우러나오는 신앙으로 찾으십시오. 여러분이 말로 표현할 수 없는 것을 토론을 통해서 탐구해 냐려 한다면 찾으려 하는 것은 더 멀리 날아가 버릴 것입니다. 그러나 신앙으로 탐구한다면 지혜는 여러분의 문 앞에 서 있을 것이고 거기서 부분적으로라도 그것을 파악할 수 있을 것입니다. 보이지 않는 것을 이해를 초월하는 그런 양식으로 믿을 때 비록 부분적으로라도 그 참모습을 파악할 수 있을 것입니다. 하느님께서 마음이 깨끗한 사람에게 당신을 부분적으로 보여 주시지만, 그래도 우리는 본성상 보이지 않는 분으로서 그분을 믿어야 합니다. Quaere ergo scientiam summam, non vervorum disputatione, sed morum bonorum perfectione ; non lingua, sed fide, quae de cordis simplicitate procedit, non quae de impietatis doctae coniectura colligitur. Si ergo tractationibus quaesieris ineffabilem, longius recedet a te magis quam erat ; si fide, stabit, ubi deget, in portis sapientia ; et ubi versatur vel ex parte videlitur. Sed tunc in veritate etiam aliquatenus attingitur, quanado invisibilis incomprehensibiliter creditur ; Deus enim credendus est invisibilis ut est, licet ex prte a mundo corde videatur. Therefore, seek the highest knowledge not by words and arguments but by perfect and right action. Not with the tongue, gathering arguments from God-free theories, but by faith, which proceeds from purity and simplicity of heart. If you seek the ineffable by means of argument, it will be further from you than it was before; if you seek it by faith, wisdom will be in her proper place at the gateway to knowledge, and you will see her there, at least in part. Wisdom is in a certain sense attained when you believe in the invisible without first demanding to understand it. God must be believed in as he is, that is, as being invisible; even though he can be partly seen by a pure heart. |
