사랑하는 형제여러 분, 우리가 서로 그렇게 사랑하여야 하는 완전한 사랑을 주님은 다음과 같이 정의하셨습니다. “벗을 위하여 제 목숨을 바치는 것보다 더 큰 사랑은 없다.” 그리고 요한은 서간에서 다음과 같이 결론 짓습니다. “그리스도께서는 우리를 위하여 당신의 목숨을 내놓으셨습니다. 그러므로 우리도 형제들을 위해서 우리의 목숨을 내놓아야 합니다.” 즉 우리를 위해 당시 목숨을 내놓으신 주님이 우리를 사랑하신 것처럼 우리도 서로 사랑해야 한다는 말입니다.

Plenitudinem dilectionis qua nos invicem diligere debemus, fratres carissimi, definivit Dominus dicens : Maiorem hac dilectionem nemo habet, ut animam suam ponat quis pro amicis suis. Fit ex hoc concequens, quod idem iste evangelista Ioannes in epistola sua dicit : Ut quamadmodum Christus pro nobis animam suam posuit, sic et nos dedeamus pro fratribus animas ponere; diligentes utique invicem sicut ipse dilexit nos, qui pro nobis animam suam posuit.

Dear brethren, the Lord has marked out for us the fullness of love that we ought to have for each other. He tells us: No one has greater love than the man who lays down his life for his friends. In these words, the Lord tells us what the perfect love we should have for one another involves. John, the evangelist who recorded them, draws the conclusion in one of his letters: As Christ laid down his life for us, so we too ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. We should indeed love one another as he loved us, he who laid down his life for us.
