요한 복음사가가 말한대로 주님이 돌아가신 후 아직 십자가 위에 매달려 계실 때, 한 병사가 가까이 가서 창으로 옆구리를 찔렀더니 거기서 물과 피가 흘러나왔습니다. 물은 세례의 상징이고 피는 성체의 상징입니다. 교회는 이 두가지 성사로써 건설되었습니다. 즉 새로 태어나는 물과 새롭게 하는 성령 즉 옆구리에서 세워진 성세성사와 성체성사로 교회가 건설된 것입니다.

Mortuo enim, ait, Iesu et adhuc in cruce pendente, approximat miles, latus lancea percussit et exinde aqua fluxit et sanguis. Unum baptismatis symbolum, aliud sacramenti.
