헨리 나웬  신부님(1932-1996)의 오! 그리고 늘! 4월 1일 [[백] 주님 만찬 성목요일] <부끄러움이 드러내는 아름다움이라는 것> The Beauty of Shyness 비록 우리 문화에선 부끄러워 하는 걸 덕성으로 여기지 않지만 부끄러움에는 나름의 아름다운 게 있습니다. 이와다르게 사람들은 우리에게 단도직입으로 눈을 똑바로 쳐다보고 마음에 담고 있는 걸 말하며 자기 얘기를 부끄러워하지 말고 나누라고 부추깁니다. 하지만 이 거침없이 마음을 있는대로 까발리는  태도에는 이내 식상하기 마련입니다. 그건 마치 그림자가 없는 나무 같습니다. 부끄러워 하는 이들에겐 긴 그림자가 있습니다. 거기에는 그이들의 수많은 아름다움이 불청객들의 눈을 피해 숨겨져 있는 겁니다. 부끄러워 하는 이들은 그냥 설명하거나 표현할 수 없는 삶의 신비를 깨우쳐 줍니다. 그이들은 우리에게 정중하고 존경스러운 우애를 나누고 사랑 안에서 말없이 함께 지내라고 촉구하는 겁니다. The Beauty of Shyness APRIL 1 There is something beautiful about shyness, even though in our culture shyness is not considered a virtue. On the contrary, we are encouraged to be direct, look people straight in the eyes, tell them what is on our minds, and share our stories without a blush. But this unflinching soul-baring, confessional attitude quickly becomes boring. It is like trees without shadows. Shy people have long shadows, where they keep much of their beauty hidden from intruders’ eyes. Shy people remind us of the mystery of life that cannot be simply explained or expressed. They invite us to reverent and respectful friendships and to a wordless being together in love.   † 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 아멘.
