헨리 나웬  신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오 ! 그리고 늘 ! 2월 23일 (성 폴리카르포 주교 순교자 기념일) <가장 개인적인 일이 가장 보편적인 일이라는 것> What Is Most Personal Is Most Universal 우리는 사생활과 공생활을 두부 자르듯 구분하여  “사생활에서 내가 무슨 일을 하든 남들이 신경쓸 건 없다”고 쉽게 말합니다. 하지만 영성으로 살아가려고 애쓰는 이라면 가장 개인적인 일이 가장 보편적인 일이고, 가장 숨어 있는 게 가장 잘 드러나는 것이며, 가장 홀로 있는 게 가장 공동체로 있는 것임을 이내 깨칠 겁니다. 우리 존재가 가장 남모르는 데서 산다는 건 우리 자신은 물론 모든 이를 위한 겁니다. 말하자면 내적인 삶은 다른 이들을 위한 삶이란 겁니다. 우리의 고독이 공동체에게는 하나의 선물이고 가장 숨겨두는 우리 생각도 일상 생활에 영향을 미친다는 겁니다. 예수님께서도 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.  “등불은 켜서 함지 속이 아니라 등경 위에 놓는다. 그렇게 하여 집 안에 있는 모든 사람을 비춘다.”(마태5,14-15) 가장 속에 있는 빛이 세상을 비추는 빛이란 겁니다. 그러니 “겉과 속이 다른 삶”을 살지 말아야 합니다. 남이 모르는 우리 삶이 남들에게 알려져도 괜찮게 살아가는 겁니다. What Is Most Personal Is Most Universal FEBRUARY 23 We like to make a distinction ㅂ our private and public lives and say, “Whatever I do in my private life is nobody else’s business.” But anyone trying to live a spiritual life will soon discover that the most personal is the most universal, the most hidden is the most public, and the most solitary is the most communal. What we live in the most intimate places of our beings is not just for us but for all people. That is why our inner lives are lives for others. That is why our solitude is a gift to our community, and that is why our most secret thoughts affect our common life. Jesus says, “No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house” (Matthew 5:14-15). The most inner light is a light for the world. Let’s not have “double lives”; let us allow what we live in private to be known in public.   † 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 아멘.
