헨리 나웬 신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 3 월 30일 <눈물을 뚫고 번져나오는 미소라는 것> Smiles Breaking Through Tears 이승을 떠나가는 건 삶의 지평을 넘어 시나브로사그러들다가 마침내 사라지는 겁니다. 항구를 떠나 수평선을 향해 움직이는 배를 바라보면 점점 작아지다가 눈에 보이지 않게 됩니다. 그러나 우리는 누군가 머나먼 바닷가에 서서 바로 그 배가 점점 더 커지다 마침내 새로운 항구에 닿는 걸 보고 있다고 믿어야 합니다. 죽음은 고통스럽게 잃어버리는 겁니다. 장례를 치르고 집에 돌아 오면 우리 마음은 슬픔에 잠깁니다. 하지만 우리가 사랑하는 벗을 새 집에 맞이 하시려 다른 바닷가에 서서 간절히 기다리고 계신 하느님을 생각하면 흐르는 눈물을 뚫고 미소가 번져나올 수 있는 겁니다. Smiles Breaking Through Tears MARCH 30 Dying is a gradual diminishing and final vanishing over the horizon of life. When we watch a sailboat leaving port and moving toward the horizon, it becomes smaller and smaller until we can no longer see it. But we must trust that someone is standing on a faraway shore seeing that same sailboat become larger and larger until it reaches its new harbor. Death is a painful loss. When we return to our homes after a burial, our hearts are in grief. But when we think about the One standing at the other shore eagerly waiting to welcome our beloved friend into a new home, a smile can break through our tears.
