헨리 나웬  신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 4월 10일 [(홍) 주님 수난 성지 주일] <종교 지도자를 경애(敬愛)한다는 것> Loving Our Spiritual Leaders 종교 지도자들, 사제, 목사, 랍비, 이맘은 찬사와존경을 받을 수 있지만 미움과 경멸의 대상이 될 수도 있습니다. 종교 지도자에게 바라는 건 기도와 가르침과 인도로 우리를 하느님께 더 가까이 끌어주는 겁니다. 해서 그분들의 행동을 주의 깊게 지켜보고 하는 말을 한마디 한마디 따지며 듣는 겁니다. 하지만 정확히 말하면 종종 우리가 제대로 깨닫지도 못하면서 그분들이 초인적인 모습이길 바라기 때문에 정작 우리와 다름없는 사람임이 드러나면 쉽게 실망하거나 심지어는 배신감까지 느끼는 겁니다. 해서 순수한 찬사를 보내던마음이 순식간에 거리낌없는 분노로 바뀌어 버리는 겁니다. 우리는 종교 지도자들을 경애하고 잘못을 용서하며 또 그분들을 우리의 형제 자매로 바라보려고 애써야 합니다. 그래야 그분들은 깨지고 부서진마음으로도 우리를 하느님의 마음에 더 가까이 이끌어 줄 수 있을 겁니다. "한나가 주님 앞에서 오래도록 기도하고 있는 동안에 엘리는 그의 입을 지켜보고 있었다. 한나는 속으로 빌고 있었으므로, 입술만 움직일 뿐 소리가 들리지 않았다. 그래서 엘리는 그를 술 취한 여자로 생각하고 그를 나무라며, “언제까지 이렇게 술에 취해 있을 참이오? 술 좀 깨시오!” 하고 말하였다. 그러자 한나가 이렇게 대답하였다. “아닙니다, 나리! 포도주나 독주를 마신 것이 아닙니다. 저는 마음이 무거워 주님 앞에서 제 마음을 털어놓고 있었을 따름입니다. 그러니 당신 여종을 좋지 않은 여자로 여기지 말아 주십시오. 저는 너무 괴롭고 분해서 이제껏 하소연하고 있었을 뿐입니다.” 그러자 엘리가 “안심하고 돌아가시오. 이스라엘의 하느님께서 당신이 드린 청을 들어주실 것이오.” 하고 대답하였다. 한나는 "나리께서 당신 여종을 너그럽게 보아주시기 바랍니다." 하고는 그길로 가서 음식을 먹었다. 그의 얼굴이 더 이상 전과 같이 어둡지 않았다.(1사무1,12-18) Loving Our Spiritual Leaders APRIL 10 Religious leaders, priests, ministers, rabbis, and imams can be admired and revered but also hated and despised. We expect that our religious leaders will bring us closer to God through their prayers, teaching, and guidance. Therefore, we watch their behavior carefully and listen critically to their words. But precisely because we expect them, often without fully realising it, to be superhuman, we are easily disappointed or even feel betrayed when they prove to be just as human as we are. Thus, our unmitigated admiration quickly turns into unrestrained anger. Let’s try to love our religious leaders, forgive them their faults, and see them as brothers and sisters. Then we will enable them, in their brokenness, to lead us closer to the heart of God. "As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli [the priest] observed her mouth. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, "How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine." "Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief." Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."
