헨리 나웬 신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 4월 19일 <자유는 마음을 끌어 당긴다는 것> Freedom Attracts 내면적으로 자유로우면 알든 모르든 남들을 자유로 초대합니다. 자유란 어디든 모습을 드러내기만하면 사람을 끌어 당깁니다. 자유로운 남자나 자유로운 여자는 남들이 평안하다고 느끼며 머물기를 바라는 자리를 만들어 냅니다. 우리가 사는 세상은 온통 조건이나 요구, 필요와 의무사항들로 가득 차서 우리에게 바라는 게 무엇인지 이따금 궁금해 지곤합니다. 하지만 참으로 자유로운 사람을 만나면 오로지 기대하는 건 우리 자신으로 들어가 바로 거기서 자유를 찾으라는 초대입니다. 내적으로 참다운 자유가 있는 곳에 하느님께서 계십니다. 그리고 우리는 하느님께서 계신 곳에 있기를 바랍니다. 그 여자의 주인들은 돈벌이할 희망이 사라진 것을 보고 바오로와 실라스를 붙잡아 광장으로 관리들에게 끌고 갔다.---그렇게 매질을 많이 하게 한 뒤 그들을 감옥에 가두고, 간수에게 단단히 지키라고 명령하였다. 이러한 명령을 받은 간수는 그들을 가장 깊은 감방에 가두고 그들의 발에 차꼬를 채웠다. 자정 무렵에 바오로와 실라스는 하느님께 찬미가를 부르며 기도하고, 다른 수인들은 거기에 귀를 기울이고 있었다. 그런데 갑자기 큰 지진이 일어나 감옥의 기초가 뒤흔들렸다. 그리고 즉시 문들이 모두 열리고 사슬이 다 풀렸다. 잠에서 깨어난 간수는 감옥 문들이 열려 있는 것을 보고 칼을 빼어 자결하려고 하였다. 수인들이 달아났으려니 생각하였던 것이다. 그때에 바오로가 큰 소리로, “자신을 해치지 마시오. 우리가 다 여기에 있소.” 하고 말하였다. 그러자 간수가 횃불을 달라고 하여 안으로 뛰어 들어가 무서워 떨면서 바오로와 실라스 앞에 엎드렸다. 그리고 그들을 밖으로 데리고 나가, “두 분 선생님, 제가 구원을 받으려면 어떻게 해야 합니까?” 하고 물었다."(사도16,19,23-30) Freedom Attracts APRIL 19 When you are interiorly free you call others to freedom, whether you know it or not. Freedom attracts wherever it appears. A free man or a free woman creates a space where others feel safe and want to dwell. Our world is so full of conditions, demands, requirements, and obligations that we often wonder what is expected of us. But when we meet a truly free person, there are no expectations, only an invitation to reach into ourselves and discover there our own freedom. Where true inner freedom is, there is God. And where God is, there we want to be. "When the owners of the slave girl realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.
