<고마워하는 마음으로 이승을 떠난다는 것>
Dying with Greateful Hearts

종종 우리는 죽음이 어떻게 닥쳐올 것인지 생각하곤 합니다. 병에 걸려서 사고나 전쟁 또는 자연재해를 입어 죽음을 맞이할건지? 그 죽음이 갑자기 닥쳐올런지 아니면 시나브로 다가올런지? 물론 이 질문에 정답은 없습니다. 그러니 이런 질문때문에 시간 낭비를 할 필요가 없는 겁니다. 어떻게 이승을 떠날지 우리는 모릅니다. 모르는 게 축복인 겁니다. 하지만 우리가 성찰해야 할 아주 중요한 질문이 있습니다. 그건 이승을 떠날 순간이 다가오면 남은 이들을 큰 슬픔에 빠지지 않게 하고 떠날건지 아니면 부끄러워하거나 죄송스런 마음이 들게 하고 떠날건지라는 질문입니다.

남은 이들의 마음을 어떻게 할지는 이승을 떠나는 우리의 준비 상태에 달려 있습니다. 고마워하는 마음, 즉 하느님께 감사드리고 가족 친지들에게 감사하는 마음으로 떠날 수 있다면 우리가 이승을 떠나는 게 남들에겐 생명을 주는 샘이 될 수 있는 겁니다.

"요셉의 형들은 아버지가 돌아가신 것을 보고, “요셉이 우리에게 적개심을 품고, 우리가 그에게 저지른 모든 악을 되갚을지도 모르지.” 하면서,--‘너희는 요셉에게 이렇게 전하여라. ′너의 형들이 네게 악을 저질렀지만, 제발 형들의 잘못과 죄악을 용서해 주어라.′’ 그러니 아우님은 그대 아버지의 하느님의 이 종들이 저지른 잘못을 용서해 주게.” 요셉은 그들이 자기에게 이렇게 말한 것을 듣고 울었다. ---그러니 이제 두려워하지들 마십시오. 내가 여러분과 여러분의 아이들을 부양하겠습니다.” 이렇게 요셉은 그들을 위로하며 다정하게 이야기하였다. 이렇게 해서 요셉과 그 아버지의 집안이 이집트에 자리 잡고 살게 되었다. 요셉은 백십 년을 살았다. 그러면서 요셉은 에프라임에게서 삼 대를 보았다. 므나쎄의 아들 마키르의 아들들도 태어나 요셉 무릎에 안겼다. 요셉이 자기 형제들에게 말하였다. “나는 이제 죽습니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 반드시 여러분을 찾아오셔서, 여러분을 이 땅에서 이끌어 내시어 아브라함과 이사악과 야곱에게 맹세하신 땅으로 데리고 올라가실 것입니다.”

Dying with Greateful Hearts

We often wonder how death will occur for us. Through illness, accident, war, or a natural disaster? Will our deaths happen suddenly or gradually? There are no answers for these questions, so we really should not spend time worrying about them. We don’t know how our lives will end, and this is a blessed ignorance! But there is an important question that we should consider: When our time to die comes, will we die in such a way that those we leave behind are not devastated  by grief or left with feelings of shame or guilt?

How we leave others depends largely on how we prepare ourselves for death. When we can die with grateful hearts, grateful to God and our families and friends, our deaths can become sources of life for others.

"When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?" When their message came to him, Joseph wept. Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them. Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father's family. He lived a hundred and ten years and saw the third generation of Ephraim's children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph's knees. Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die.
