헨리 나웬 신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 9월 14일 [홍] 성 십자가 현양 축일 <한결같이 신실하다는 것> Remaining Faithful 뭇사람들은 의식하든 의식하지 못하든 마침내는 형편이 좋아질거라고 기대하며 살아갑니다. 말하자면 전쟁이나 굶주림, 가난, 억압 그리고 착취는 사라지고 모든 이들이 서로 어우러져 살아가는 걸 바라는 겁니다. 그런 기대덕분으로 의욕을 가지고 살아가며 일하는 겁니다. 하여 기대한 일들이 평생 동안 이루어지지 않으면 환멸을 느끼고 스스로 실패자로 여겨버리는 겁니다. 하지만 예수님께서는 그처럼 낙관적으로 기대하는 걸 옹호하진 않으십니다. 그분은 사랑하는 도시 예루살렘의 파괴뿐만 아니라 잔인하고 폭력과 다툼으로 가득 찬 세상을 예언하십니다. 예수님께서 보시기에 이 세상에 행복결말은 없다는 겁니다. 예수님의 과업은 세상 끝 날이 오기 전에 이 모든 문제들을 해결하시는 게 아니라 어떤 대가를 치르더라도 한결같이 신실하시는 겁니다. "사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고가 네부카드네자르 임금에게 대답하였다. “이 일을 두고 저희는 임금님께 응답할 필요가 없습니다. 임금님, 저희가 섬기는 하느님께서 저희를 구해 내실 수 있다면, 그분께서는 타오르는 불가마와 임금님의 손에서 저희를 구해 내실 것입니다. 임금님, 그렇게 되지 않더라도, 저희는 임금님의 신들을 섬기지도 않고, 임금님께서 세우신 금상에 절하지도 않을 터이니 그리 아시기 바랍니다.”(다니3,16-18) Remaining Faithful SEPTEMBER 14 Many people live with the unconscious or conscious expectation that eventually things will get better; wars, hunger, poverty, oppression, and exploitation will vanish; and all people will live in harmony. Their lives and work are motivated by that expectation. When this does not happen in their lifetimes, they are often disillusioned and experience themselves as failures. But Jesus doesn’t support such an optimistic outlook. He foresees not only the destruction of his beloved city Jerusalem but also a world full of cruelty, violence, and conflict. For Jesus there is no happy ending in this world. The challenge of Jesus is not to solve all the world’s problems before the end of time but to remain faithful at any cost. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king.
