헨리 나웬 신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 11월 10일 <우리와 다름없는 성인들> Saints, People Like Us 우리는 세례를 통해 생물학적인 가족보다 훨씬 더 큰 가족의 일부가 되는 겁니다. 어두움 속에서 빛이 되라고 하느님께서 “성별(聖別)"하신 이들의 가족인 겁니다. 이처럼 성별된 이들을 성인이라고 부르는 겁니다. 성인을 거룩하고 경건한 이로 생각하고 이이들의 머리 위에 후광과 탈혼(脫魂)에 든 눈길을 떠올리기 십상이지만 정작 참다운 성인은 우리가 훨씬 더 쉽게 다가갈 수 있는 분인 겁니다. 그분들도 우리와 다름없이 평범하게 살아가며 자질구레한 문제거리로 골머리를 앓는 분들인 겁니다. 그분들이 성인이 된 건 하느님과 하느님의 백성을 향해 분명하고도 흔들림없이 초점을 맞추기 때문인 겁니다. 그분들의 삶이 몇 몇 부분은 아주 달리 보일 수도 있지만 대부분은 우리가 사는 것과 놀랄만큼 비슷한 겁니다. 성인들은 우리의 형제요 자매로 우리도 성인이 되라고 추동하고 있는 겁니다. "하느님 우리 아버지 앞에서 여러분의 믿음의 행위와 사랑의 노고와 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 희망의 인내를 기억합니다."(1테살1,3) Saints, People Like Us NOVEMBER 10 Through baptism we become part of a family much larger than our biological family. It is a family of people “set apart” by God to be light in the darkness. These set-apart people are called saints. Although we tend to think about saints as holy and pious, and picture them with halos above their heads and ecstatic gazes, true saints are much more accessible. They are men and women like us, who live ordinary lives and struggle with ordinary problems. What makes them saints is their clear and unwavering focus on God and God’s people. Some of their lives may look quite different, but most of their lives are remarkably similar to our own. The saints are our brothers and sisters, calling us to become like them.
