1, 19-34  John the Baptist Denies Being the Christ

           세례자 요한의 증언

Now this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ."
    

21

They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?"
       He said, "I am not."
      "Are you the Prophet?"
       He answered, "No."

Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 당신은 누구요? 당신은 자신을 누구라고 생각하고 있소?

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, ’Make straight the way for the Lord.’ "

Now some Pharisees who had been sent

questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

"I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.

27

He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."

This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This is the one I meant when I said, ’A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’

I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."

Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.

33

I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ’The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."

       오늘 성서 본문에서는 유다인들이 세례자 요한에게 가서 그가 누구인지를 묻는 장면이 나옵니다. 요한이 자신을 그리스도가 아니고, 엘리야도 아니고, 기다리고 기다리던 예언자도 아니라고 말하자, 그들은 "우리는 보낸 사람들에게 대답해 줄 말이 있어야 하겠으니 당신이 누군지 좀 알려주시오."하고 요청하지요. 이 때 요한의 대답은 아주 정확하고 분명한 것이었습니다. "나는 그저 광야에서 외치는 자의 소리요."

    
       오늘날 우리들 중에는 자기 자신이 누구인지, 도대체 우리는 왜 이 세상에 왔으며, 어떻게 살아야 하는 지, 스스로 잘 알고 있는 사람이 생각보다 그리 많지 않습니다. 그런데 세례자 요한의 대답을 한번 보십시오! 그의 대답은 아주 오랫동안 준비된 대답이었습니다. 평소 자신의 존재와 하느님의 존재, 그리고 자기 삶의 목적과 방향에 대해서 아주 깊이 생각하고 또 생각한 답이었습니다. .


        만약 오늘 사람들이 우리들에게 와서, "당신은 도대체 누구입니까? 당신은 스스로에 대해서 누구라고 생각하고 있소?" 하고 묻는다면 어떻게 대답할까요? 정확하고 분명하게 말할 준비가 되셨습니까?

         사랑이신 주님,
         오늘도 귀한 하루를 허락해주셔서 참으로 감사합니다. 이 하루 역시 기쁘고 겸손히 살겠습니다.
         

        주님,
         오늘 아침, 저는 세례자 요한의 증언을 통해 ’나 자신은 스스로 누구라고 대답할 수 있을까?’ 하고 다시 한번 곰곰히 생각해보게 됩니다. 요한의 답을 흉내내어 보자면 ’주님을 찬미하는 한 목소리’, 혹은 ’주님의 사랑을 받는 한 어린 양’이라고 말하고 싶습니다.

         이 대답이 스스로에게는 부끄럽지 않고, 또 남들에게는 공명이 될 수 있도록 이끌어주시옵소서. 또한 앞으로 제가, 언제나 어디서나, 또 누구에게서나 이렇게 겸손히 또 한편 당당히, 말할 수 있도록 그렇게 이끌어주시옵소서. 저희의 사랑이시자 희망이신 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘.
