제1독서  이사 40,25-31

28“고생하며 무거운 짐을 진 너희는 모두 나에게 오너라. 내가 너희에게 안식을 주겠다. 29나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니 내 멍에를 메고 나에게 배워라. 그러면 너희가 안식을 얻을 것이다. 30정녕 내 멍에는 편하고 내 짐은 가볍다.” (마태 11,28-30)

예수님을 따르던 군중은 세례자 요한의 투옥으로 인해 낙담하고 상심에 젖어 있었을 것입니다. 그들은 일부 종교지도자들이 지운 무거운 짐과 군주 헤로데의 폭정에서 구제될 길을 찾고 있었습니다. 그들은 요한이 그들을 도와줄 사람이라고 기대하였으나 이제 그는 감옥에 있습니다. 요한이 그분이라고 지적한 예수가 정말로 그들의 구세주일까요?

예수님께서는 군중이 마치 목자 없는 양들처럼 보였기에 그들에게로 마음이 쏠리셨습니다. “고생하며 무거운 짐을 진 너희는 모두 나에게 오너라.(마태 11,28)”하고 그들을 부르셨습니다. 이 사람들에게는 사랑이 열쇠라는 것을 예수님께서는 알고 계셨습니다. 아들을 세상에 보내어 인간 조건과 관련된 모든 것을 경험하도록 한 것은 하느님 아버지의 사랑이었습니다. 또한 사랑의 궁극적 행위인 십자가상 죽음을 준비하는 아들을 3년간 설교와 치유의 사명에 파견한 것도 하느님의 사랑이었습니다.

가톨릭 교회 교리서는 하느님의 아들이 왜 사람이 되셨는지에 대하여 말하고 있습니다. ‘말씀’은 이처럼 우리가 하느님의 사랑을 깨닫게 하시려고 사람이 되셨다고 말입니다. “하느님께서 당신의 외아들을 이 세상에 보내 주셔서 우리는 그분을 통해서 생명을 얻게 되었습니다. 이렇게 해서 하느님의 사랑이 우리 가운데 분명히 나타났습니다(가톨릭 교회 교리서 458항).”

예수님께서는 특별히 우리의 필요와 능력에 적절한 당신 멍에를 지라고 우리를 초대하시듯 그분을 따르는 이들을 초대하셨습니다. 예수님께서는 ‘나는 이 멍에를 너에게 벅찬 것으로 만들지 않겠다.’하고 약속하셨지요. “네가 나에게 기대어 나로 하여금 그 짐을 짊어지게 해 준다면 우리는 함께 승리할 수 있을 것이다. 나에게로 오너라. 진리가 승리할 것이고, 장애물들이 무너질 것이며, 너에게 필요한 모든 힘과 용기를 얻게 될 것이다.”

예수님께서는 우리 위에 당신 아버지의 사랑을 부어주시고 우리가 그 사랑 안에 확고하고 굳게 뿌리내리기를 원하십니다. 대림 시기는 바로 이 약속을 받는 시기입니다. 예수님께로 나아갑시다. 주님께서 초대하시는 대로 그분의 멍에를 짊어지고 그분을 따르며 기뻐합시다.

아버지, 당신의 진실함과 사랑에 감사드립니다.

저의 길에 빛이 되고

시련과 아픔의 시간에 쉼터가 되어주라고

당신 아들을 보내주셨기에

저의 짐은 가볍습니다.”

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."(Matthew 11:28-30)

The crowds following Jesus were probably troubled and discouraged by the imprisonment of John the Baptist. These people were searching for relief from the heavy burdens put upon them by some of their religious leaders as well as the territorial (and tyrannical) rule of King Herod. They had hoped that John was the one who would help them, but now he was in prison. Could Jesus, who John had pointed to as the one, truly be their salvation?

Jesus looked upon the crowd as children without a shepherd, and so his heart went out to them. Come to me, he called, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens (Matthew 11:28). Jesus knew that for these people, love was the key. It was love that moved the Father to send him to earth and experience everything that had to do with the human condition. And it was love that sent him on his three-year mission of preaching and healing as he made his way to the final act of love, his death on the Cross.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us why the Son of God became man: The word became flesh so that thus we might know God's love: 'In this is the love of God made manifest among us, that God sent his only son into the world, so that we might live through him'  (CCC, 458).

Jesus was inviting his followers as he invites us to take his yoke, which is specially fitted to our needs and abilities. I won't make it hard for you, he promises. If you lean on me and let me shoulder the burden, we can be victorious together. Come to me, and truth will prevail, obstacles will fall, and you will find all the strength and courage you need.

Jesus wants to pour out his Father's love upon us and make us secure and firmly rooted in that love. And Advent is just the season to receive this promise. Let's come to Jesus, as he invited, take up his yoke, follow him, and rejoice.

Father, I bless you for your faithfulness and love. My burden is lighter because you have sent your Son to be a light for my path and a shelter in times of trial or suffering.
