대림 제2주간 금요일

제1독서  이사 48,17-19

복   음  마태 11,16-19

18“사실 요한이 와서 먹지도 않고 마시지도 않자, ‘저자는 마귀가 들렸다.’ 하고 말한다. 

19그런데 사람의 아들이 와서 먹고 마시자, ‘보라, 저자는 먹보요 술꾼이며 세리와 죄인들의 친구다.’ 하고 말한다. 그러나 지혜가 옳다는 것은 그 지혜가 이룬 일로 드러났다.” (마태 11,16-19)

우리는 의미심장한 격언들을 잘 알고 있습니다. ‘호랑이 굴에 들어가야 호랑이를 잡는다.’ ‘보이는 게 전부는 아니다.’‘쇠는 두드릴수록 강해진다.’‘주는 대로 받는다.’ 이런 격언들이 우리 인생의 여러 시기에 제법 들어맞을 수도 있지만 전반적으로 그 실용 가치는 한정되어 있습니다. 반면, 예수님의 짧은 격언들인 지혜는 ‘이룬 일’로 입증되고(마태 11,19), 심오한 의미를 지니며, 우리의 생활 전체에 적용할 수 있는 진리입니다. 복음 메시지가 진리임을 주님의 십자가와 부활은 물론 그분의 전 생애가 증명해 주고 있습니다. 이제 주님께서는 복음 메시지의 지혜에 삶으로써 응답하라고 우리를 부르고 계십니다.

그리스도인의 삶에서 불확실한 것은 아무것도 없습니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 당신께 충실히 머물 때 결코 실망하지 않을 것임을 분명히 하셨습니다. 주님과 그분의 길을 따르는 것은 항상 그 자체로 큰 보상을 가져옵니다. 가능한 모든 불운에 대항해서 버텨야 할 때에도 우리는 우리에게 힘을 주시고 용기를 주시고 위로해 주시는 성령을 체험할 것입니다. 우리가 직면하는 그 어떤 상황과 도전에서도, 주님의 삶 그 자체가 우리를 활기 있게 하는 힘의 원천이 될 것입니다.

우리는 세례자 요한과 예수님이 하느님의 율법 준수에 대한 새로운 접근을 의심한 자들과 맞선 것처럼 단식이냐 잔치냐를 논쟁하는 자들과 충돌할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 당신이 어떤 비판에 직면하든 포기하지 마십시오. 당신은 하느님의 지혜에 굳게 의지하고, 유연하고 겸손하게 처신하며, 주님께 충실하도록 최선을 다함으로써 하루하루 살아가는 데 필요한 힘을 얻을 것입니다.

우리는 하느님의 사랑받는 자녀들입니다. 그분께서는 우리가 곤경에 처해 있을 때 당신의 두 팔로 우리를 안아주실 것입니다. 우리가 지쳐있을 때 생기를 돋우어 주실 것입니다. 그것을 어떻게 확신할 수 있을까요? 하느님께서는 결코 변하지 않으시기 때문입니다. 한 번 하신 약속은 꼭 지키시기 때문입니다. 우리 인생에 대한 당신의 의도와 계획들을 항상 충실하게 이루시기 때문입니다. 마지막으로, 주님의 지혜가 당신께 의지하는 자들 안에서 항상 입증되기 때문입니다.

“주 예수님, 신뢰와 믿음으로

주님을 바라볼 때에만

평화와 안정을 찾을 수 있음을 저는 압니다.

주님께 충실한 자 되기 위해 당신의 진실하심에 의지하기로 결심합니다.”

“For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon', the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds." (11:18-19)

We are familiar with short sayings that carry a lot of punch. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Don't judge a book by its cover. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. What goes round comes round. While these may be pertinent at different times in our lives, their overall practical value is limited. By contrast, Jesus' short saying, Wisdom is vindicated by her deeds (Matthew 11:19), carries a lot of punch and is a truth that applies to the whole of our lives. His entire life, as well as his cross and resurrection proved that his gospel message is the truth. And now he calls us to respond to that message by letting its wisdom rule our lives.

There is nothing hit-and-miss about the Christian life. Jesus made it clear that if we remain true to him, we will not be disappointed. Instead, his wisdom will be vindicated in us just as it was in him. Following the Lord and his ways always brings its own deep rewards. Even when we have to hold fast against all odds, we will experience the Holy Spirit strengthening, encouraging, and comforting us. His life itself can become the source of power energizing us, no matter what situation or challenge we face.

We may come up against those who dispute fasting or feasting, just as John the Baptist and Jesus faced those who doubted their different approaches to godliness. But no matter what kind of criticism you face, don't give up. By holding on to God's wisdom, remaining flexible and humble, and doing your best to stay faithful to the Lord, you will find the strength you need to continue on day after day.

We are beloved sons and daughters of God. He will put his arms around us during times of difficulty. He will spur us on when we are disheartened. He will revitalize us when we are weary. How can we be sure of this? Because God never changes. Because once he makes a promise, he keeps it. Because he is always faithful to fulfill his purposes and intentions in our lives. And finally, because his wisdom will always be vindicated in those who cling to him!

Lord Jesus, I know that I will find peace and security only as I look to you in trust and reliance. I choose to rely upon your faithfulness to keep me faithful to you.
