제1독서  집회 48,1-4.9-11

10제자들이 예수님께, “율법 학자들은 어찌하여 엘리야가 먼저 와야 한다고 말합니까?” 하고 물었다.

11그러자 예수님께서 대답하셨다. “과연 엘리야가 와서 모든 것을 바로잡을 것이다.

12내가 너희에게 말한다. 엘리야는 이미 왔지만, 사람들은 그를 알아보지 못하고 제멋대로 다루었다. 그처럼 사람의 아들도 그들에게 고난을 받을 것이다.”

13그제야 제자들은 그것이 세례자 요한을 두고 하신 말씀인 줄을 깨달았다. (마태 17,10-13)

영광의 예수님을 대면한 감격에서 막 헤어난 제자들은 종말에 관한 신학적 의문을 갖습니다. 거룩한 변모가 이루어진 산 위에서 목격한 엘리야의 발현은 제자들에게 자연히 의구심을 일으켰습니다. 당신이 진정으로 오시기로 약속된 사람의 아들이라면 율법학자들은 왜 엘리야가 먼저 와야 한다고 합니까?(마태 17,10). 제자들이 방금 목격한 사람은 돌아오기로 약속된 엘리아였을까요? 그렇다면 이 일을 왜 비밀로 해야 합니까? 왜 이 일을 모든 사람에게 널리 알려 하느님 나라의 도래를 앞당기지 않는 것일까요?

제자들의 질문에 예수님께서는 엘리야는 벌써 왔지만 그들이 그를 알아보지 못하였다고 침착하게 대답하십니다(마태 17,12). 예수님께서는 제자들에게 새로운 신학을 펼치시기보다 현재의 순간에 눈을 뜨라고 권유하십니다.

우리 자신이 종말에 대하여 많은 의문을 갖고 있는 것처럼, 제자들은 중요한 점을 놓쳤습니다. 더구나 하느님께서 당신의 일을 완성하시는 때와 시간은 우리가 알 바 아닙니다. 오히려 우리는 하느님께서 바로 지금 그 일을 하고 계시다는 것을 인정해야 할 것입니다. 하느님께서 활동하고 계시니 우리는 그분을 지지해야 합니다. 산 위에서 들려온 말씀을 그대로 실천해야 합니다. “너희는 그의 말을 들어라(마태 17,5).”

무엇이 우리의 듣는 능력을 방해합니까? 어떤 다른 소리들이 우리가 몰두할 정도는 아니더라도 호기심을 갖도록 요구합니까? 하느님 이외에 어떤 새로운 인성 이론, 웹 사이트 또는 어떤 형태의 오락이 우리를 참 자아와 만나게 해준다고 약속합니까? 무슨 중요한 본당 프로그램이나 개인 일정이 기도 안에서 하느님을 기다리는 우리의 마음을 산만하게 합니까? 용서를 하지 않아 경직된 관계는 무엇입니까? 어떤 경우에 우리는 누군가를 포기하고 하느님의 자녀인 그를 위해 기도하기를 그만둡니까? 십자가를 지려는 우리의 자유의지를 방해하는 것을 깨닫지 못할 만큼 습관이 되어버린 죄에는 어떤 것이 있습니까?

매일 모든 계획과 문제들에서 자신을 비우는 시간을 갖고 주님의 말씀을 경청합시다. 그러면 때로는 성서의 한 구절을 떠올려 주실 수도 있고, 때로는 특별한 과제를 주실 수도 있습니다. 때로는 하느님의 사랑에 대한 체험이나 참회를 해야 한다는 생각에 압도당하게 됩니다. 그런가하면 때로는 아무것도 느끼지 못하고 아무것도 받은 것이 없다고 느낄 것입니다. 그러나 그것은 주님의 영역입니다. 우리가 할 일은 단지 사랑하는 분을 받아들이고 그분의 말씀을 경청하는 것입니다.

“주님, 주님의 권세를 일으키시어 저희를 구하러 오십시오!

겸손한 마음으로 주님을 모시려면

저희가 어떻게 변화되어야 하는지 알려주십시오.”

And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead." And the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Eli'jah must come?" (17:9-10)

Fresh from a powerful encounter with Jesus in his glory, the disciples had end-times theological questions. Elijah's appearance on the Mount of Transfiguration naturally made them wonder. If you are truly the promised Son of Man, why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first? (Matthew 17:10). Had they just witnessed that promised return of Elijah? If so, why keep quiet about it? Why not speed the arrival of the kingdom by telling everyone?

Jesus patiently replied that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him (Matthew 17:12). Instead of trying to develop a revised theology for them, he urged them to open their eyes in the present moment.

Like many of our own end-times queries, the disciples missed the crucial point. It is not for the more us to know the times and seasons when God will complete his work. Rather, we need to recognize what God is doing right now. God is on the move, and we need to get behind him. We need to do exactly what the Voice on the mountain said: Listen to him (Matthew 17:5).

What impedes our ability to listen? What other voices command our curiosity, if not our allegiance? What new personality theory, Web site or form of recreation promises to put us in touch with our true self but apart from God? What worthwhile parish program or personal agenda distracts us from waiting on the Lord in prayer? What relationship is paralyzed by unforgiveness? Where have we given up on someone and stopped interceding for that child of God? What sin has become so customary we don't even notice how it hobbles our freedom to take up the cross?

Let's allow time every day to empty ourselves of all our agendas and questions and just listen. Sometimes we will come away with a line from Scripture or a specific task. Sometimes we will be overwhelmed with the experience of God's love, or of our need to repent. Sometimes we will feel nothing and think we have received nothing. That is up to the Lord. All we are asked to do is recognize the Beloved and listen.

Lord, stir up your might and come save us!
