Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion; for I will come and I will dwell in the midst of you, says the LORD. And many nations shall join themselves to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people; and I will dwell in the midst of you, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. I am the ever-virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the true God, from whom one lives.

With these words spoken in the language of the Aztecs, a lady surrounded by brilliant light addressed an Aztec peasant named Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, Mexico. It was December 1531, and Tepeyac was the site of an ancient temple dedicated to the mother goddess of the Aztecs. Mary told Juan Diego, a recent convert to Catholicism, that she wanted him to tell the local bishop to build a chapel to her there, where she would hear the cries of the people and help their many sorrows, necessities, and misfortunes.

At first skeptical, Bishop Juan de Zumrrga sent Juan Diego to get proof of the lady's identity. He was convinced of the authenticity of Mary's appearance when Juan returned with two signs: Castilian roses, which normally don't grow in December in Mexico, and a beautiful image of Mary miraculously imprinted on his cloak.

This extraordinary event was indeed a divine visitation for the people of Central America. As word of it spread, thousands of Indians came to believe in Jesus and accepted baptism. There was also a profound renewal of faith among the Catholic Spaniards in Mexico. Through Mary's appearance and her image on Juan Diego's cloak, God made himself known to a pagan people and touched off a great revival in a nation that had been steeped in idolatry and darkness.

In every age, God's heart has yearned for men and women to come to know him. His desire to bring people to his Son, Jesus, and the light of his truth is just as strong today as it was when Mary spoke to Juan Diego five centuries ago. And today God is still using wondrous means. He is still working through the Holy Spirit, Mary, the saints, and the most ordinary members of the church to reveal himself to us. In this present age when nations, even those of longstanding Christian tradition, are threatened by new forms of idolatry, let us ask Our Lady of Guadalupe to pray for us. And may we too proclaim the gospel through our own lives and actions!

use me as a vessel of your love.

Help me to be open to the inspirations of your Spirit

♥묵상

“나는 영원한 동정 성모 마리아, 생명의 원천이신 참 하느님의 어머니이다.”

이 말씀은 아즈텍 농부의 옷을 입고 빛에 둘러싸인 한 부인이 멕시코의 테페약 언덕에 사는 후안 디에고라는 농부에게 아즈텍 말로 하신 것입니다. 1531년 12월의 일이었지요. 테페약은 아즈텍 사람들의 어머니 여신에게 봉헌된 고대 신전이 있는 곳이었습니다. 동정 마리아는 최근에 그리스도교로 개종한 후안 디에고에게 나타나시어 그곳에 당신을 위한 성전을 세우라고 지역 주교에게 전해 달라고 하시며, 그 곳에서 백성들의 애원을 듣고 비탄과 곤궁과 역경에서 그들을 도와주겠다고 하셨습니다.

주므르가 주교는 처음에는 이 말을 믿으려 하지 않고 그 부인의 신원에 대한 증거를 받아오라고 하며 후안 디에고를 돌려보냈습니다. 주교는 후안이 두 가지의 증표를 가지고 돌아오자 그것이 동정 마리아의 발현이라는 것을 의심하지 않았습니다. 그 두 가지 증표란 멕시코에서 12월에는 자라지 않는 카스틸리안 장미와 후안 디에고의 외투에 기적적으로 새겨진 동정 마리아의 아름다운 모습이었습니다.

이 놀라운 사건은 실제로 중앙아메리카인들을 찾아주신 하느님의 방문이었습니다. 이 말이 퍼지자 수많은 인디오들이 몰려와 예수님을 믿고 세례를 받았습니다. 또한 멕시코에 거주하는 스페인 신자들 사이에서는 깊은 신앙 쇄신의 바람이 일어났습니다. 하느님께서는 동정 마리아의 발현과 후안 디에고의 외투에 새겨진 성모님의 모습을 통하여 이교 백성에게 당신을 알리시고 우상과 암흑의 세계로 치닫는 나라에 획기적인 신앙 쇄신의 계기를 마련해 주셨습니다.

오늘날 당신의 아드님이신 예수님과 당신 진리의 빛으로 인류를 인도하시려는 하느님의 열망은 5세기 전에 동정 마리아께서 후안 디에고에게 말씀하셨을 때처럼 뜨겁습니다. 오늘날에도 하느님께서는 놀라운 방법들을 사용하고 계십니다. 그분께서는 성령을 통하여, 동정 마리아와 성인들 그리고 교회의 가장 평범한 사람들을 통하여 우리에게 당신을 드러내 보이시고자 일하고 계십니다. 많은 나라, 심지어는 오랜 그리스도교 전통의 나라들까지도 새로운 형태의 우상으로 위협 받고 있는 오늘날, 과달루페의 동정 마리아께 우리를 위하여 기도해 주시기를 간청합시다. 우리도 우리 자신의 생활과 활동을 통하여 복음을 선포할 수 있기를 바랍니다.
