And he went to the second and said the same; and he answered, 'I go, sir,' but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. (21:28-31)

Meditation♥

Imagine being told that drug dealers and loan sharks were entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. How would you respond? Jesus used similar images when he spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people. Some of them were scrupulous in following the law but were still missing something essential: Through lack of repentance, they had closed themselves off to God's mercy.

Jesus told his listeners a parable of a young man whose father asked him to work in the fields. The young man refused, but later he changed his mind (Matthew 21:29). The Greek word here is metanoia. This term can be translated to say either that the boy changed his mind or that he repented. As the boy thought about his relationship with his father, he turned from no to yes and did has his father asked.

Every day, we face the decision to follow God's ways or to sin. Since we are fallen, sin is always waiting to capture us and sometimes it does. But what a beautiful gift God has given us in the gift of repentance! How amazing that we can ask Almighty God for forgiveness and receive his grace to change!

Jesus longed for the leaders to see their sin, repent and receive his mercy. The prostitutes and tax collectors humbly repented, and he promised that they would enter the kingdom of God! How much more joyfully would he give such a promise to those who had dedicated themselves to helping God's people if only they would turn to him!

As we continue in this season of Advent, let's examine our hearts and repent of our sins. As we do, we will see God's love and his power changing us. Embracing the Sacrament of Reconciliation can open us to the grace of divine healing in a way no other kind of prayer can. In response, God's promise echoed through prophet Zephaniah will be ours: I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the Lord (Zephaniah 3:12).

Almighty God,

I praise you for your loving mercy.

You are my refuge.

Your love and forgiveness are tremendous.

I worship you and humbly come

Thank you for your glorious gift of repentance.

마약 밀매상들과 고리대금업자들이 당신보다 먼저 하느님의 나라에 들어간다는 말을 들었다고 상상해 보십시오. 어떻게 반응하시겠습니까? 예수님께서는 대사제들과 백성의 원로들에게 이와 비슷한 비유를 들어 말씀하셨습니다. 그들 가운데 일부는 율법을 소심하게 준수하였지만 아직 본질적인 어떤 것, 곧 참회의 부족으로 스스로를 하느님의 자비에서 격리시켰습니다.

예수님께서는 청중들에게 한 젊은이의 비유를 말씀해 주셨습니다. 이 젊은이는 처음에는 싫다고 하였지만 나중에 생각을 바꾸어 일하러 갔습니다. 여기에 사용된 그리스어는 메타노이아입니다. 이 용어는 ‘젊은이가 자기 마음을 고쳐먹었다’ 또는 ‘젊은이가 뉘우쳤다’라고 번역할 수 있습니다. 자기 아버지와의 관계를 생각한 이 청년은 ‘아니요’에서 ‘예’로 돌아서서 아버지가 원하신 대로 하였습니다.

우리는 매일 하느님의 길을 따를 것인지 죄악의 길을 따를 것인지 결정을 해야 합니다. 인류가 타락한 이후 지금까지, 죄악은 항상 우리를 손아귀에 넣기 위해 대기하고 있으며 때로는 그렇게 합니다. 그러나 하느님께서 참회의 은혜를 통하여 우리에게 주신 선물은 얼마나 아름다운 것입니까? 전능하신 하느님께 용서를 청하고 변화의 은총을 받는다는 것은 또 얼마나 놀라운 일입니까!

예수님께서는 지도자들이 그들의 죄를 깨닫고 뉘우치고 당신의 자비를 받기를 열망하셨습니다. 창녀들과 세리들은 겸손하게 자기들의 죄를 뉘우쳤으므로 하느님의 나라에 들어갈 것이라고 약속하셨습니다! 하물며 하느님의 백성을 도와주는 일에 몸 바친 이들이 주님께 마음을 돌리기만 한다면 그러한 은총을 얼마나 더 기꺼이 베풀어 주실까요!

이 대림 시기에 우리의 마음을 성찰하고 죄를 뉘우칩시다. 그렇게 하면 우리를 변화시키는 하느님의 사랑과 능력을 볼 것입니다. 고해성사는 다른 종류의 기도로는 할 수 없는 방법으로 하느님의 치유의 은총에 우리의 마음을 열어줍니다. 그 응답으로, 스바니야 예언자를 통하여 들려온 하느님의 약속이 우리의 것이 될 것입니다. “내가 기를 못 펴는 가난한 사람만을 네 안에 남기리니 이렇게 살아남은 이스라엘은 야훼의 이름만 믿고 안심하리라(스바 3,12).”
