In overflowing wrath for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you, ... "... as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you and will not rebuke you. For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you.                            Meditation♥

Do you remember as a child being sent to sit in the corner to think about what you did wrong? Then, after some time, your mother came and told you that everything was forgiven and that you should not do it again. Do you remember leaving that corner with hope and gratitude that you were being given another chance? Well, in this passage, God is telling the people of Israel something similar. And in the good news of his mercy, Israel can now rejoice.

In the same way that God reached out to Israel, we can reach out to those who don't know the Lord or whose faith may be wavering. This is probably the best way to evangelize people by sharing with them the reality of God's forgiveness and grace.

Just as Jesus did, we too can evangelize through relationships. It's a bit more involved than just repeating doctrines, but there's nothing more moving than when we demonstrate to a friend the love of God and let our love be an invitation for that person to come to know God as well. It's as we spend time together that God will reveal himself to them through us.

It may take time. The people we reach out to may not find God right away. But it is crucial to remain steadfast, trusting that God is moving. Think of all the time that Jesus spent with his disciples. Surely he didn't just give them sermon after sermon! It was his friendship with them that won them over and proved that his words were true.

It's true that we may not see fruit right away, but we should never doubt that God is working. Just as he works in us at Mass and in our prayer, he is working in the people we are praying for and reaching out to. Then, at just the right time and in just the right way, they will find themselves asking more about the Lord and even opening their hearts to him. And when that happens, we will be just as filled with joy as they are!

Lord Jesus,

send me out today

to reach your loved ones.

Give me your hope

where mine is weak or troubled.

Give me your strength

and courage where mine is lacking.

Make me both bold and tender

so that these people might see you

and come to love you.

당신이 어렸을 때 구석에 앉아 잘못을 반성하라고 보내졌던 일을 기억하십니까? 시간이 좀 지나자 당신의 어머니가 다가와 모두 용서했으니 다시는 그런 짓을 하면 안 된다고 말씀하셨지요. 당신은 한 번 더 기회가 주어졌다는 희망과 고마운 마음을 안고 그 구석을 떠난 것을 기억하십니까? 그렇습니다. 이 이야기에서, 하느님께서는 이스라엘 백성에게 그와 비슷한 것을 말씀하고 계십니다. 이스라엘은 이제 하느님의 자비에 대한 기쁜 소식 안에서 기뻐할 수 있습니다.

우리는 하느님께서 이스라엘에게 다가가신 것과 같은 방법으로 주님을 모르는 이들과 신앙이 흔들리고 있는 이들에게 다가갈 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 그 길이 하느님의 용서와 은총의 실체를 사람들과 공유함으로써 그들을 복음화하는 가장 좋은 방법일 것입니다.

바로 예수님께서 하신 것처럼, 우리도 관계를 통하여 복음을 전할 수 있습니다. 그것은 그저 교리를 반복하는 것보다 좀 더 포괄적입니다. 하지만 한 친구에게 하느님의 사랑을 보여주고 우리의 사랑이 그 친구에게 하느님을 알게 하는 초대가 되는 것보다 더 감동적인 일은 없을 것입니다. 하느님께서는 우리가 친구들과 시간을 보내는 동안 우리를 통하여 그들에게 당신을 드러내 보이실 것입니다.

시간이 걸릴 수도 있지요. 우리가 설득시키고자 하는 사람이 즉시 하느님을 발견하지 못할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 중요한 것은 하느님께서 일을 하고 계신다는 것을 믿어 의심치 않으면서 꿋꿋하게 계속해 나가는 것입니다. 예수님께서 제자들과 함께 보낸 모든 시간을 생각해 보십시오. 틀림없이 예수님께서는 제자들에게 설교에 설교만 거듭하지 않으셨을 것입니다! 예수님께서는 우정을 통하여 제자들을 설득하고 당신의 말씀이 진리임을 보여주셨습니다.

우리 노력의 열매를 즉시 볼 수 없는 것도 사실입니다. 그러나 하느님께서 활동하고 계심을 결코 의심하지 말아야 합니다. 미사와 기도 중에 우리 안에서 일하시는 것처럼 하느님께서는 우리가 설득시키려고 노력하며 기도하는 사람들 안에서도 일하고 계십니다. 그리하여 그들은 적절한 시간에 적절한 방법으로, 하느님에 관하여 더 많은 질문을 하고 하느님께 마음을 열고 있는 자신들을 발견하게 될 것입니다. 그러한 일이 일어날 때 우리는 그들과 함께 기쁨에 넘칠 것입니다.
