34나는 사람의 증언을 필요로 하지 않는다. 그런데도 이러한 말을 하는 것은 너희가 구원을 받게 하려는 것이다. 35요한은 타오르며 빛을 내는 등불이었다. 너희는 한때 그 빛 속에서 즐거움을 누리려고 하였다. 36그러나 나에게는 요한의 증언보다 더 큰 증언이 있다. 아버지께서 나에게 완수하도록 맡기신 일들이다. 그래서 내가 하고 있는 일들이 나를 위하여 증언한다. 아버지께서 나를 보내셨다는 것이다. (요한 5,33-36)

♥묵상

누가 당신에게 자신을 거룩한 사람이라고 생각하느냐고 묻는다면 ‘아니오.’ 하거나 ‘결코 내가 바라는 것만큼 거룩하지 않습니다.’하고 대답할 것입니다. 우리는 대개 우리 자신이 거룩하다고 생각하지 않습니다. 그러나 신약 전체에서 우리는 거룩한 백성이 되라는 부름을 받고 있으며 심지어는 거룩한 자들로 여겨지고 있습니다! 그런데 왜 우리는 거룩한 삶을 살 수 있다는 것을 믿으려 하지 않는 겁니까? 

성인들이 우리에게 보여준 표양들을 생각해 보십시오. 우리는 그들이 거룩한 사람들이었음을 어렵지 않게 알 수 있고, 그들이 이루신 ‘행적’의 ‘증언’을 보고 경외하는 데 문제가 없습니다(요한 5,36). 우리는 그들이 특별한 사람들이라고 생각합니다. 사실 그렇습니다. 하지만 그들 역시 우리와 같은 약점과 죄의 성향을 지닌 똑같은 인간이었음을 잊기 쉽습니다. 그들 역시 우리처럼 유혹과 맞서야 했고 심지어는 유혹에 빠지기도 하였습니다. 그러나 그들은 끊임없이 주님께로 되돌아왔고 자신들의 실수에서 배움을 얻었습니다.

예수님께서는 우리들 중의 한 사람이 되셨습니다. 죄만 빼고 모든 면에서 인간이 되셨습니다. 그렇게 하심으로써 우리에게 거룩한 삶을 몸소 보여주시고 당신이 거룩하신 것처럼 우리도 진정으로 거룩하게 될 수 있음을 보여주셨습니다. 예수님께서는 죄 많은 세상에서 외따로 계시지 않았습니다. 예수님께서는 사람들 가운데 사셨고, 자신의 거룩하심을 세상에 드러내심으로써 하느님의 권능이 어둠을 빛으로, 두려움을 희망으로 변화시킬 수 있었습니다. 예수님께서는 그 누구보다도 진실로 세상에 사셨으나 세상에 속하지 않으셨습니다.

거룩함에 이르는 참된 길은, 성령께 자신을 쇄신시키고 변모시키고 거듭나게 하도록 내어맡긴 채 한번에 한 발자국씩 나아가면서, 다음에 할 옳은 일을 끊임없이 찾아가는 것입니다. 그러기 위해 우리는 예수님께서 사신 것처럼 사는 것이 그저 멋진 하나의 이상이 아니라 우리에게 진정한 가능성임을 확신해야 합니다. 그러니 실망하지 마십시오! 거룩함은 목적지가 아니라 일생의 여정이라는 사실을 기억하십시오. 필요한 것은 천국에 이를 때까지 순종과 신뢰의 발자국을 한 발 한 발 내딛는 것입니다.

“주 예수님,

주님께서 거룩하신 것처럼 거룩하게 되는 길을

저희에게 보여주시니 감사드립니다.

주님, 저도 진정으로 성인이 될 수 있다는

확신과 희망을 주십시오.”

34Not that the testimony which I receive is from man; but I say this that you may be saved. 35He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has granted me to accomplish, these very works which I am doing, bear me witness that the Father has sent me. (Jn 5:33-36)

Meditation♥ 

Ask anyone if they think they are holy and the answer is likely to be either "no," or " not nearly as holy as I know I can be."We don’t generally think of ourselves as being holy. Yet throughout the New Testament, we are called to be holy people?we’re even referred to as holy ones! So why do we find it difficult to believe that we are capable of living a holy life?

Think of the examples set before us by all the saints. We have no difficulty in perceiving them as holy men and women?of looking at the "testimony" of their "works" and standing in awe (John 5:36). We think of them as special?and they are?but we tend to forget that they were human beings just like us, with the same weaknesses and propensities to sin. Very few of them lived a protected life isolated from the taint of the world. Instead, they faced temptations just as we do, and even failed. But they kept turning back to the Lord and learning from their mistakes.

Jesus became one of us, human in every way but sin, to demonstrate to us a life of holiness and to show us that we really can be holy as he was holy. He was not isolated from the sinful world. He lived among the people, and even took his holiness out into the world so that the power of God could turn darkness into light and fear into hope. He, more than anyone else, was truly in the world but not of the world.

The true path to holiness is to constantly seek to do the next right thing, taking one step at a time as we allow ourselves to be reformed, reshaped and recreated by the Holy Spirit. And for this we need to be convinced that living as Jesus did is not just a nice ideal but a very real possibility for us. So don’t get discouraged! Remember that holiness is not a destination but a life-long journey. All it takes is one step of obedience and trust after another, all the way to heaven.

"Lord Jesus,

I praise you as my Savior and my brother,

and thank you for showing me

how to be holy, as you are holy.

Give me confidence and hope,

Lord, that I really can become a saint."
