♥묵상

이 부분은 족보 이야기이므로 ‘볼만한 내용’을 보려고 슬쩍 넘어가기 쉽습니다. 그러나 가만히 들여다보면 여기에서 마태오 사도가 그저 예수님의 이 세상 족보를 열거하고 있는 것만은 아니라는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 마태오는 예수님께서 아브라함과 다윗의 계보에 속한다는 것을 보여주지만 과거와의 극적인 결별을 예고하고 있습니다.

얼핏 보면 마태오가 당시 유다인들의 족보와 아주 비슷한 족보를 써 놓은 것처럼 보입니다.  예수님의 근본을 그의 민족 전통 안에 세우고 이스라엘의 모든 위대한 인물과의 연속성을 강조하고 있지요. 그러나 주의 깊게 보면 마태오는 관습을 깨고 있습니다. 그저 부계만을 따르지 않고 네 명의 여인들, 곧 타마르와 라합, 룻과 밧 세바에 대해서도 언급하고 있습니다. 게다가 이 여인들의 개인사가 언제나 유다인의 이상적인 여인상을 보여주는 것도 아닙니다. 그 중 하나는 창녀로 알려졌고, 하나는 시아버지를 속여 임신을 하게 되었고, 적어도 세 명은 외국인이었으며, 하나는 욕정이나, 배우자가 동의한 간통과 음모의 피해자였습니다.

마태오는 이 바람직하지 않은 여인들을 끌어들여 독자들을 깜짝 놀라게 하였습니다. 그는 사람들에게 하느님께서는 예수 그리스도 안에서 인간적인 기대에서 완전히 벗어난 아주 새롭고 다른 것을 불러일으키신다는 것을 보여 주고자 한 것입니다.

이 대림 시기 동안 당신을 어떻게 놀라게 해 주시려는지 주님께 여쭈어보는 것은 어떨까요? 하느님께서 함께 하신다는 것을 상상조차 할 수 없는 사람이나 상황이 있습니까? 다시 생각해 보십시오. 하느님께서는 당신에게 가시같은 존재에 불과한 그 사람을 사랑할 힘을 주시고자 하시는지도 모릅니다. 당신의 기도를 통하여 육체적 정신적 치유의 기적을 행하실 수 있다는 것을 보여 주시려는지도 모릅니다. 주님께서는 당신을, 네 그렇습니다, 바로 당신을 혼돈과 슬픔이 있는 곳에 평화의 도구로 쓰고자 하실 수도 있습니다.

예수 성탄 대축일이 9일 앞으로 다가왔지만 준비하기에 너무 늦은 것은 아닙니다. 여러분의 삶에서 예사롭지 않은 상황들을 생각해 보고 주님께 새로운 전망을 주십사 요청하십시오. 여러분이 기도할 때나 미사에 참례할 때뿐 아니라 하루 중 어느 때라도, 심지어는 어둠 속에 있는 순간에도 주님께서 당신의 모습을 드러내 보이실 것을 기대하십시오. 여러분 자신의 ‘영적 족보’를 예수님의 육적인 족보처럼 놀라운 것으로 만드십시오!

Meditation♥

Because this passage is a genealogy, it’s easy to gloss over it so that we can get on to the "good stuff." However, a closer look reveals that Matthew wasn’t just recounting Jesus’ earthly lineage; he was heralding a dramatic break with the past, even as he showed Jesus to be in the line of Abraham and David.

At first glance, we might say that Matthew wrote a genealogy much like the other Jewish genealogies of his time: He rooted Jesus in the heritage of his people and highlighted his continuity with all the great figures of Israel. But a closer look shows that Matthew also broke with tradition. Rather than just following the fathers, he mentioned four women as well: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba. And what’s more, these women’s personal histories did not always reflect the Jewish ideal of womanhood: One was reputed to be a prostitute; another became pregnant by a ruse she played on her father-in-law; at least three were foreigners; and one was either a victim of lust or a consenting partner to adultery and conspiracy.

Matthew included these unlikely women as a way to take his readers by surprise. He wanted to show them that in Christ God has radically departed from human expectations and brought about something new and different.

During this time of Advent preparation, why not take some time to ask God how he may want to surprise you. Are there people or situations that you can’t imagine God being part of? Look again. He may want to empower you to love that person who has been nothing but a thorn in your side. He may want to show you that he can work miracles of physical and spiritual healing through your prayers. He may want to make you?yes, you !?an instrument of his peace where there is chaos or distress.

Christmas is only nine days away, so it’s not too late to get ready. Think of the extraordinary situations in your life and ask God to give you a new perspective. Expect him to manifest himself not just when you pray and attend Mass but all throughout your day?even in your darker moments. Let your own "spiritual genealogy" become just as surprising as Jesus’ physical genealogy!
