제1독서 판관 13,2-7.24-25
복 음 루카 1,5-25
18즈카르야가 천사에게, “제가 그것을 어떻게 알 수 있겠습니까? 저는 늙은이고 제 아내도 나이가 많습니다.” 하고 말하자, 19천사가 그에게 대답하였다. “나는 하느님을 모시는 가브리엘인데, 너에게 이야기하여 이 기쁜 소식을 전하라고 파견되었다. 20보라, 때가 되면 이루어질 내 말을 믿지 않았으니, 이 일이 일어나는 날까지 너는 벙어리가 되어 말을 못하게 될 것이다.” (루카 1,5-25)
제가 성전에서 기도하고 있을 때 주님께서는 저의 간구를 들어주시고자 천사 가브리엘을 보내셨습니다. 그 때 제가 무어라고 한지 아십니까? “증명해 주세요!” 어쩌면 그렇게 멍청할 수가 있었을까요? 주님, 저의 불신을 용서해 주시니 감사합니다.
주님, 말없이 주님의 길에 대하여 깊이 생각해보는 이 시간이 저에게 얼마나 필요했는지 알 수 있습니다. 제가 의심을 품었는데도 주님께서는 저와 저의 사랑하는 아내 엘리사벳에게 저희의 단 하나 소원인 아들을 갖게 해 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다! 자비의 주님! 주님께서는 저의 불신마저도 아랑곳하지 않으시고 저같이 늙은 바보마저도 도구로 삼아 일을 하십니다.
기도의 힘이 얼마나 놀랍습니까! 제가 성소에서 당신께 분향하며 당신 백성들의 기도를 바치고 있을 때 주님께서는 저희 요청을 들어주러 오셨습니다. 그때 백성들은 밖에서 영적으로 저와 하나 되어 저희에게 필요한 것들을 주십사 간구하고 있었지요. 주님께서는 당신 백성이 필요한 것, 바라는 것들을 가지고 당신께로 오면 가여워 마음이 움직이십니다! 그리하여 주님께서는 저에게 응답해 주셨습니다.
그것도 보통 응답입니까! 주님께서는 여느 아들이 아니라 제 손으로 길러 저의 뒤를 따르게 할 수 있는 그런 아들을 주시기로 약속하셨습니다. 세상에! 제 아들이 메시아의 도래를 미리 알려주는 사람이 될 것이라니요. 이 얼마나 놀라운 일입니까! 이 아기가 어미의 태 안에서부터 성령으로 충만한 자가 될 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 더구나 이 아기가 당신이 보시기에 훌륭한 인물이 될 거라고 하십니다. 주님, 주님의 자비와 능력이 얼마나 놀라운지요! 주님께서는 저희가 청하는 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 것을 베풀어 주십니다!
가브리엘이 말했지요. 주님의 약속은 때가 되면 이루어질 것이라고. 이제 저는 그 약속이 이루어지기를 끈기 있게 기다릴 준비가 되어 있습니다. 주님의 기적들이 저의 가정에서 열매를 맺을 것을 기다리면서 주님만을 바라봅니다. 말없이 기다려야 했던 시간이 저에게는 소중한 은총의 시간이었습니다. 주님의 권능은 얼마나 놀라우신지! 주님, 저는 이 기적의 아이를 길러 메시아를 위해 준비하라고 내리신 임무를 수행할 준비가 되어있습니다.
“주님,
저희에게 주신 성인들과 신앙 선조들의 표양에 감사드립니다.
즈카르야처럼 저희도 이 대림 시기 동안 기도하고 묵상하면서
주님의 약속이 이루어질 때를 기다리게 해 주십시오.”
18And Zechari'ah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." 19And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. 20And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." (Lk 1:5-25)
here I was, praying to the Lord in his Temple and he sent his angel, Gabriel, to give me my heart’s desire. And what did I say? "Prove it!" How could I be so stupid? O Lord, thank you for forgiving my unbelief!
Lord, I can see how I needed this time without words to reflect on your ways. Even after I doubted, you still promised to give me and my dear Elizabeth our only dream—a son! You are so merciful! My unbelief hasn’t limited you—you can work even with an old fool like me!
How amazing is the power of prayer! You came to answer me as I was offering to you the incense, the prayers of your people—and the whole assembly was praying outside, joined to me in spirit as I poured out our needs to you. You are moved with compassion when your people come to you with their needs and their desires! When we gather as one in prayer, there is so much power. And you answered me!
And what an answer! You promised not just a son like any other, one that I could raise and hope to follow in my footsteps. No! Amazingly, you tell me that my son will be the herald of the Messiah. You tell me that he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb. You even tell me that he will be great in your eyes. Lord, how astounding are your mercy and your power! When you answer prayer, you go so far beyond what we ask!
Gabriel told me that your promise will be fulfilled in its proper time. Now I am ready to wait patiently for that fulfillment. My eyes are fixed on you, as I look expectantly for all of your miracles in my family to come to fruition. This time of silent waiting has become a season of grace. How beautiful is your power! I want to be ready, Lord, to fulfill the role you have given me in raising this miracle child and preparing for your Messiah!
"Thank you, Lord for the example you give us in the saints and fathers of our faith. Help us to learn from them how powerful you are. Like Zechariah, may we spend this time of waiting for the fulfillment of your promise in prayerful reflection."
