제1독서 아가 2,8-14

11“자, 이제 겨울은 지나고 장마는 걷혔다오. 12땅에는 꽃이 모습을 드러내고 노래의 계절이 다가왔다오. 우리 땅에서는 멧비둘기 소리가 들려온다오. 13무화과나무는 이른 열매를 맺어 가고 포도나무 꽃송이들은 향기를 내뿜는다오. 나의 애인이여, 일어나오. 나의 아름다운 여인이여, 이리 와 주오. 14바위틈에 있는 나의 비둘기 벼랑 속에 있는 나의 비둘기여! 그대의 모습을 보게 해 주오. 그대의 목소리를 듣게 해 주오. 그대의 목소리는 달콤하고 그대의 모습은 어여쁘다오.” (아가 2,8-14)

봄! 봄은 그 아름다움으로 우리를 거의 사로잡습니다. 꽃들이 피기 시작하고 새들이 노래하고 가지마다 꽃들이 향기롭습니다! 긴 겨울은 지나고, 이른 비가 땅을 촉촉이 적셔 놓습니다. 자연은 생명의 싹을 틔울 만반의 준비를 갖추고 있습니다. 그러나 정원사라면 누구나 당신에게 이렇게 말해줄 것입니다. 나무의 잔가지를 쳐주지 않으면 탐스런 꽃과 풍성한 열매를 결코 볼 수 없을 것이라고…. 그리스도와 첫사랑에 빠지는 흥분도 이와 비슷합니다. 모든 것이 새롭고 신이 납니다. 그러나 그리스도와 함께하는 삶이 열매를 맺게 하려면 역시 가지를 쳐주어야 합니다.

가지치기에 관한 우리의 반응은 아마 오늘 독서에 나오는 비둘기와 같을 수도 있습니다. 비둘기처럼 ‘바위틈에, 벼랑 속에(아가 2,14)’ 숨고 싶을 것입니다. 사랑을 막 시작할 때에, 누가 우리의 일부분이 잘려 나가는 이 아픈 과정을 생각하고 싶겠습니까? 심지어 가지치기를 하라는 말은 사랑하는 예수님을 우리가 전혀 기쁘게 해 드리지 못함을 의미하는 것이라고 느낄 수도 있습니다.

그러나 예수님은 마치 연인처럼 우리를 알고 계시며 이런 말씀으로 우리를 안심시켜 주십니다. “그대의 모습을 보게 해 주오. 그대의 목소리를 듣게 해 주오. 그대의 목소리는 달콤하고 그대의 모습은 어여쁘다오(아가 2,14).” 우리는 주님께 소중하고 사랑스러운 존재입니다. 그렇기 때문에, 주님께서는 우리가 많은 열매를 맺기를 바라십니다. 그래서 잔가지를 쳐내야 합니다. 사실, 우리의 잔가지를 쳐내야 한다는 그 자체가 우리에 대한 예수님의 헌신을 의미합니다. 포도원지기가 포도나무를 돌보듯, 예수님께서는 우리 내면의 잠재력을 보시고 충만한 삶에 방해가 되는 것은 무엇이나 없애주고자 하십니다.

일어나 숨은 곳에서 나와 우리 주님의 사랑의 빛 안으로 들어갑시다. 우리 마음을 활짝 열어드리면 우리를 보시고 우리 안에 잘라버려야 할 것이 무엇인지 보여주실 것입니다. 진정한 양심성찰과 고해성사가 두려움을 이겨내고 하느님의 사랑받는 깨끗해진 자녀로 살고 하느님 나라를 위해 열매를 맺도록 우리를 도와줄 것입니다.

“예수님, 제 영혼의 님이시여,

조건 없는 당신 사랑에 감사드립니다!

또한 주님을 위해 향기 가득한 꽃을 피우고

풍성한 열매를 맺는 포도나무가 되도록

저를 깨끗이 씻어주십시오.”

11 For see, winter is past, the rains are over and gone. 12The flowers appear on the earth. The season of glad songs has come, the cooing of the turtledove is heard in our land. 13The fig tree is forming its first figs and the blossoming vines give out their fragrance. Come then, my love, my lovely one, come, 14My dove, hiding in the clefts of the rock, in the coverts of the cliff, show me your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet and your face is beautiful. (Sg 2:8-14)

pringtime! It almost assaults us with its beauty: flowers blooming, birds singing, vines with fragrant flowers! With long winter past, early rains have had their effect on the earth, and nature stands poised to burst forth with life. But any gardener will tell you, you won’t get as many flowers or fruit if you don’t prune your plants. The first excitement of falling in love with Christ can be similar: Everything seems new and exciting. But in our life with Christ, pruning is also necessary if we want to be fruitful.

When we think about pruning, our reaction may be like the dove in today’s reading: to hide "in the clefts of the rock, in the secret recesses of the cliff" (Song of Songs 2:13). In the first blush of our love, who wants to think about this painful process, where parts of us are cut away? We may even feel the suggestion of pruning means we are less than pleasing to our beloved Jesus.

But Jesus knows us and reassures us, just like the lover, saying "Let me see you, let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet, and you are lovely" (Song of Songs 2:14). We are precious to him, and lovely to him. Because this is so, he wants us to be as fruitful as possible. And so we must be pruned. Actually, the fact that we need to be pruned is proof in itself of Jesus’ commitment to us. Just as a vinedresser cares for his vines, Jesus sees the potential in us and wants to remove everything that keeps us from being fully alive.

Let’s arise and come out of hiding, into the light of our Lord’s love. Then, as we open our hearts to him and he gazes upon us, he can show us what needs to be pruned away. A good examination of conscience and confession can help us overcome our fears and live as beloved and cleansed children of God, ready to bear fruit for his Kingdom!
