제1독서 1사무 1,24-28

복    음 루카 1,46-56

46그러자 마리아가 말하였다. “내 영혼이 주님을 찬송하고 47내 마음이 나의 구원자 하느님 안에서 기뻐 뛰니 48그분께서 당신 종의 비천함을 굽어보셨기 때문입니다. 이제부터 과연 모든 세대가 나를 행복하다 하리니 49전능하신 분께서 나에게 큰일을 하셨기 때문입니다. 그분의 이름은 거룩하고 ….” (루카 1,46-56)

“내 영혼이 주님을 찬송하고 내 마음이 나의 구원자 하느님 안에서 기뻐 뜁니다.”(루카 1,46-47). 

세세대대를 통하여 보여주신 하느님의 진실하심에 대한 마리아의 아름다운 선포는 이렇게 시작됩니다. 마리아가 경외심으로 하느님 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 있는 모습, 두 팔을 펴들고 서서 하느님을 찬미하는 모습, 혹은 엘리사벳의 집을 돌며 주님께 환희의 노래를 부르며 춤을 추는 모습을 여러분은 그려볼 수 있을 것입니다. 중요한 점은 마리아가 말한 대로, 그의 전 존재 - 그의 영혼, 정신 그리고 육신 - 로써 하늘에 계신 아버지께 감사를 드렸다는 것입니다.

마리아가 자신의 전 존재로써 하느님을 찬미하고 경배했다는 것은 이치에 맞는 말입니다. 그렇지 않습니까? 첫째, 마리아의 정신은 대대로 하느님께서 이룩하신 모든 놀라우신 일을 생각해 내기 시작했습니다. 하느님의 위대한 업적, 하느님을 두려워하는 사람들에게 베푸신 자비, 아브라함과 그의 후손들에 대한 성실하심 등…. 마리아가 이런 위대한 사건들을 떠올리고 상상력을 동원해 그 사건들을 마음 속에 그려볼 때, 그녀의 영혼은 저절로 하느님을 경배하고 기쁨과 환희에 넘쳐 뛰놀기 시작하였습니다. 그때 마리아의 입술에서 찬미의 노래가 터져 나오고, 얼굴은 미소로 빛났으며, 감사와 경배로 두 손이 들어올려졌습니다.  

오늘의 말씀이 우리에게 주는 교훈은 무엇일까요? 우리가 미사에 참례할 때나 날마다 기도하는 시간을 가질 때 우리의 전 존재로써, 곧 육신, 정신, 영혼이 다 함께 조화를 이루어 하는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 우리는 몸의 태도나 마음 속에 일어나는 생각들을 다스림으로써 주님의 계시를 받고 사랑으로 경배드릴 수 있도록 우리의 영혼을 올바른 자세로 가다듬을 수 있습니다.

소파에 기대앉는 것은 텔레비전을 보는 자세로서는 좋을지 모르나 성서를 읽는 좋은 자세라고는 할 수 없습니다. 성서는 좀 딱딱한 의자에 앉아 읽는 것이 더 바람직할 것입니다. 책상에 앉아 읽으면 우리 마음에 다가오는 주님의 말씀을 노트에 적을 수도 있겠지요. 마찬가지로, 하루를 보내며 성탄노래 몇 곡을 부른다면 우리의 마음과 목소리로 하느님을 경배하게 되겠지요. 어쩌면 우리도 마리아처럼 환희에 넘쳐 덩실덩실 춤을 추게 될지 누가 압니까?

“저에게 위대한 일을 해 주신 주님, 찬미 드립니다.

교회에 대한 약속을 지켜주시는 주님, 모든 영광 받으소서.

저는 오늘부터 계속 제 자신을 축복받은 자로 생각하겠습니다.”

46And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; 49for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. (Lk 1:46-56)

So begins Mary’s beautiful proclamation of the faithfulness of God through all generations. You can almost picture Mary dropping to her knees in reverence, or standing with her hands raised in praise, or maybe even dancing merrily around Elizabeth’s home as she sang her song of joy to the Lord. The point is that, just as she said, Mary’s entire being?her spirit, soul, and body?was fully engaged as she gave thanks to her Father in heaven.

It makes sense, doesn’t it, that Mary’s whole being would be involved in giving praise and worship to God? First, her mind began to recall all the wonders God had done throughout the ages?his mighty deeds, his great mercy to those who fear him, his faithfulness to Abraham and his descendents. As she recalled these great events and used her imagination to picture them, her spirit naturally began to rejoice and exalt in worship. And this exaltation caused a song of praise to burst forth from her lips, a smile to shine on her face, and her hands to rise in gratitude and worship.

The lesson for us today? Whenever we attend Mass or set aside time for daily prayer, it is crucial that we get our whole person?body, soul, and spirit?to work together in harmony. By taking authority over the posture of our bodies and the thoughts going through our minds, we can put our spirits in the right position to receive revelation from the Lord and to worship him in love.

Reclining on the sofa may be a good posture for watching television, but it’s not always the best way to read our Scriptures! We would probably do better in a firm chair, or at a desk, where we can avail ourselves of study materials or write down in a prayer journal what we feel the Lord is saying to us. Similarly, singing a few Christmas carols as we go through the day can engage our minds and voices in a spirit of worship. Who knows? We might end up dancing for joy, just as Mary did!

"I praise you, Lord,

for you have done great things for me.

Holy is your name! All glory to you, Lord,

for keeping your promises to your church.

From this day forward, I will count myself blessed."
