제1독서 말라 3,1-4.23-24
복 음 루카 1,57-66
57엘리사벳은 해산달이 차서 아들을 낳았다. 58이웃과 친척들은 주님께서 엘리사벳에게 큰 자비를 베푸셨다는 것을 듣고, 그와 함께 기뻐하였다. 59여드레째 되는 날, 그들은 아기의 할례식에 갔다가 아버지의 이름을 따서 아기를 즈카르야라고 부르려 하였다. 60그러나 아기 어머니는 “안 됩니다. 요한이라고 불러야 합니다.” 하고 말하였다. (루카 1,57-66)
세례자 요한의 탄생을 통하여 수백 년 동안 베일에 가리고 신비에 싸여있던 예언들이 인간의 모습을 취하게 되었습니다. 요한은 “부모의 마음을 자녀에게 돌리고 자녀의 마음을 부모에게 돌릴” 전령이며 예언자이기 때문이었습니다(말라 3,24). 요한의 메시지는 그분의 삶의 증언이 우리 삶의 본보기가 될 수 있는 것처럼 오늘도 우리의 심금을 울릴 수 있습니다.
표징과 놀라운 일들을 통하여 거룩하게 예고되고 이름 지어진 것처럼, 요한은 광야에서 외치는 소리가 되었습니다. “너희는 광야에 주님의 길을 닦아라. 우리 하느님을 위하여 사막에 길을 곧게 내어라(이사 40,3).” 요한은 하느님의 약속이 성취되기를 오랜 세월 기다려온 백성을 위로하였습니다. 요한은 그들에게 복역기간이 끝나고 죗값이 치러졌다고 선포하였습니다(40,2). 기쁜 소식입니다! 그는 높은 산 위에 올라가 목청 높여 유다의 모든 도시를 향해 외쳤습니다. “너희의 하느님께서 여기에 계시다(40,9)!”
얼마나 멋진 구원역사 완성의 서곡입니까! 예수님께서는 요한을 들어 “여자에게서 태어난 이들 가운데 세례자 요한보다 더 큰 인물은 나오지 않았다(마태 11,11).” 라고 하셨습니다. 요한이 어떻게 자신의 운명을 이해하게 되었을까요? 그는 즈카르야와 엘리사벳과 살던 어린 시절부터, 후에 예언서에 몰입할 때까지 하느님의 부르심과 그의 사명을 찾는 데 열중했습니다. 요한은 기도 생활에 깊이 전념하였으므로 바람에 흔들리는 갈대도 아니요 단순히 멸망을 알리는 과격한 예언자도 아니었습니다. 요한은 하느님의 사람, 즉 자신의 삶을 이제 곧 열리려는 하느님의 나라를 위해 바칠 사람에 대한 확신에 가득 차서 두루 다니며 설교하였습니다. 예수님께서는 요한을 들어 주님의 날에 앞서 온 ‘엘리야’라고 확언하셨습니다.
하느님께서는 요한처럼 우리의 삶을 당신 뜻에 투신하라고 부르고 계십니다. 최선을 다해 주님의 부르심을 찾고 이를 실천할 힘을 주시라고 성령께 간구합시다. 믿음을 가지고 주님과 함께, 하느님 나라를 앞당기기 위해 기쁘게 전진합시다. 다함께 외칩시다. “주님께서 오시나니 그의 길을 닦으시오.”
“우리 가운데 계시는 하느님의 현존,
우리의 왕, 우리의 심판관이신 엠마누엘이여,
오소서. 주 하느님, 저희를 구원하소서!
저희를 성령으로 활기차게 하시어,
요한이 주님의 첫 번째 오심을 준비한 것처럼,
저희가 주님의 재림을 준비하게 하소서.”
57Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. 58And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechari'ah after his father, 60but his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John."(Lk 1:57-66)
In John’s birth, the veiled references and mysterious prophecies, centuries old, took human form. For this was the messenger, the prophet who would "turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers" (Malachi 3:1; 4:6). Even today, his message can speak to our hearts, just as the witness of his life can become an example for our lives.
Divinely announced and named amidst signs and wonders, John became the voice of one calling out in the wilderness: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God" (Isaiah 40:3). He comforted a people long awaiting the fulfillment of God’s promises. John proclaimed the end of their hard service and atonement for their sins (40:2). Good news! He went up to a high mountain and lifted his voice with a shout, saying to the towns of Judah, "Behold your God!" (40:9)
What a prelude to the fulfillment of salvation history! Even as an infant, John was, according to Jesus, "the greatest born of woman" (Matthew 11:11). How did John come to comprehend his destiny? From his earliest days with Zechariah and Elizabeth, to his later immersion in the prophetic writings, John learned to devote himself to seeking out God’s call and mission for his life. Because he had developed a strong prayer life, John was more than a reed swayed by the wind or simply another wild-eyed prophet of doom. He moved and spoke with the conviction of a man of God, one whose life was dedicated to the kingdom God was about to inaugurate. Jesus confirmed that John was, indeed, the "Elijah" who would come as a forerunner to the day of the Lord.
God is calling us, like John, to commit our lives to his will. Let us devote all of our energy to seeking out his call and to asking his Spirit for the power to carry it out. In trust, let us move ahead with the Lord, joyfully advancing God’s kingdom. Together, let us cry out: "Make way, for the Lord is coming!"
"O come, Emmanuel, God’s presence among us, our King, our Judge. Save us, Lord our God! Enliven us with your Holy Spirit that we might prepare the way for your second coming, as John did for your first!"
