제1독서 2사무 7,1-5.8-12.14.16

복    음 루카 1,67-79

76아기야, 너는 지극히 높으신 분의 예언자라 불리고 주님을 앞서 가 그분의 길을 준비하리니 77죄를 용서받아 구원됨을 주님의 백성에게 깨우쳐 주려는 것이다. 78우리 하느님의 크신 자비로 높은 곳에서 별이 우리를 찾아오시어 79어둠과 죽음의 그늘에 앉아 있는 이들을 비추시고 우리 발을 평화의 길로 이끌어 주실 것이다. (루카 1,67-79)

즈카르야는 아주 긴 대림시기를 경험했습니다. 가브리엘 천사의 발현 이후 아홉 달 동안 말을 할 수 없었으니까요. 그러한 상태에서 그는 자신의 불신앙을 뉘우치고, 예기치 않은 엘리사벳의 잉태를 기뻐하며 성서 속의 풍성한 약속들에 대하여 곰곰이 생각할 시간이 많았습니다.  

하느님의 말씀이 마침내 이루어지자, 즈카르야는 갓 태어난 아들의 이름을 천사가 지시한 대로 부르게 하였습니다. 이 공적인 순종행위로써 그의 혀가 풀리게 되자 성서에서 골라 모아 가슴 속에 간직해 두었던 하느님 찬미의 노래가 그의 입술을 타고 흘러나왔습니다.

“주 이스라엘의 하느님께서는 찬미받으소서. 그분께서는 당신 백성을 찾아와 속량하시고 당신 종 다윗 집안에서 우리를 위하여 힘센 구원자를 일으키셨습니다. (루카 1,68-69)”

즈카르야가 어떻게 이야기의 끝을 그토록 확신할 수 있었을까요? 그가 이야기의 시작에 포함되었을지 모르지만 그것은 아직 씨앗의 형태였습니다. 그가 품에 안고 있는 것은 무력한 아기였습니다. 우리 대부분은 이 출생에서 희망을 보지만 동시에 부서지기 쉬운 징표를 보았을 것입니다. 그러나 즈카르야는 이 출생을 강력한 하느님의 개입으로 기쁘게 받아들였습니다.

우리의 삶 안에서는 하느님께서 어떤 거룩한 감동을 일으켜 주십니까? 활동하시는 하느님을 어디에서 볼 수 있습니까? 그분의 계획에 어떻게 협력할 수 있습니까? 어쩌면 그것은 수태와 출생의 기적일 수 있습니다. 세례성사로 받은 거룩한 생명을 기를 수 있도록 우리 가정에 한 아이가 맡겨지는 것입니다. 어쩌면 사제나 선교사, 의사나 은행가, 사진작가, 아내나 남편이 되라는 하느님의 부르심에 대한 의식이 점점 커가는 것일 수도 있습니다. 또 어쩌면 구유 앞에 무릎을 꿇을 때나 성서말씀을 들을 때, 혹은 성탄송가를 들을 때 우리에게 돌연 나타나는 놀라운 일일 수도 있습니다. 아니면 우리에게 소외당한 어떤 사람의 은밀한 포옹일 수도 있고, ‘원대한 사랑으로’ 선택한 세속적 과업을 행하는 중에 받는 계시의 순간일 수도 있습니다.

이러한 것들 역시 단지 시작일 뿐입니다. 요한의 출생처럼 말이지요. 그러나 요한의 출생과 마찬가지로, 그것들도 여전히 우리들 가운데에 태어나신 주님께서 진실로 행하신 일들입니다. 마음 속 깊은 곳에서 우러나는 경외심으로 주님을 영접합시다.

“예수님, 

주님께서 저희 세상에 나셨다는 사실이

오랜 세월이 흐른 지금도 여전히 놀랍기만 합니다.

주님을 알아볼 수 있는 눈과

깊은 사랑과 감사로 주님을 영접할 수 있는 마음을 저에게 주십시오.”

76And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, 78through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high 79to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Lk 1:67-79)

Zechariah had undergone a very long Advent. For the nine months since Gabriel appeared to him, he had been unable to speak. He had plenty of time to repent of his unbelief, rejoice in Elizabeth’s unexpected pregnancy, and mull over the rich promises in the Scriptures.

When God’s promise was finally fulfilled, Zechariah made sure his newborn son was named as the angel directed. This public act of obedience loosened his tongue, and the praises of God, culled from the Scriptures he had been storing in his heart, sprang from his lips.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel . . . for he has looked favorably upon his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David. (Luke 1:68-69)

How could Zechariah so confidently see the end of the story? He may have been included in its beginning, but it was still only in seed form. All he held in his arms was a helpless baby—filled with potential, yes, but a baby nonetheless. Most of us would see this birth as a hopeful yet fragile sign, but Zechariah welcomed it as a powerful divine intervention.

What divine stirrings has God brought to birth in our lives? Where can we see him on the move? How can we cooperate with his plan? Perhaps it is the miracle of conception and birth, a child entrusted to our family so we can nurture the divine life given at baptism. Perhaps it is a growing sense of God’s call upon: to be a priest, a spouse, a doctor, an evangelist, a banker, a photographer. Perhaps it is the wonder that breaks upon us as we kneel before the crèche or listen to the Scriptures and anthems of the Nativity. Perhaps it is a furtive hug from someone who has been estranged from us. Perhaps it is a moment of revelation in the midst of a mundane task that we have chosen to do "with great love."

These too are just beginnings—as the birth of John was. But like John’s birth, they are still genuine works of the Lord who has been born into our midst. Let us welcome him with profound reverence.

"Jesus, after all these years,

I still marvel that you have been born into our world.

Give me eyes to see you and a heart to welcome you tomorrow

with deep love and gratitude."

전에 없이 어수선한 한 달이 아니었나 싶습니다. 모든 갈등과 아픔과 고통과 그럼에도 불구하고,, 우리를 사랑하시어 우리에게 오시는 예수님이 탄생하셨다는 기쁜 소식을 알립니다. 알렐루야, 알렐루야!! 사랑하는 사람들과 함께하는 기쁜 성탄 되시길 빕니다.
