제2독서 히브 1,1-6

복   음  요한 1,1-18

14말씀이 사람이 되시어 우리 가운데 사셨다. 우리는 그분의 영광을 보았다. 은총과 진리가 충만하신 아버지의 외아드님으로서 지니신 영광을 보았다. … 17율법은 모세를 통하여 주어졌지만 은총과 진리는 예수 그리스도를 통하여 왔다. 18아무도 하느님을 본 적이 없다. 아버지와 가장 가까우신 외아드님 하느님이신 그분께서 알려 주셨다. (요한 1,1-18)

“그분께서는 당신을 받아들이는 이들, 당신의 이름을 믿는 모든 이에게 하느님의 자녀가 되는 권한을 주셨다(요한 1,12).”

이 간단한 말씀이 예수님께서 태어나신 이유를 말해줍니다. 우리를 하느님의 자녀가 되게 하시려고 태어나신 것입니다. 성탄 선물로 이보다 더 귀한 것이 있을까요? 우리가 해야 할 일은 오직 예수님을 영접하고 믿는 일뿐입니다.

여러분은 집에 손님이 오면 어떻게 맞이합니까? 여러분이 그 손님을 반긴다는 것을 느끼게 하고 편안하게 해 주려고 하지 않습니까? 만일 이 손님이 여러분이 간절히 필요로 하는 것을 가져온다면 어떻게 하시겠습니까? 평소보다 좀더 멀리 마중을 나가지 않겠습니까? 예수님께서는 오늘, 바로 이렇게 우리가 당신을 환영해주기를 바라십니다. 예수님의 구원을 받으려고 두 팔을 활짝 벌리고, 예수님의 가르침과 보호를 기꺼이 받아들이는 마음으로, 또한 하느님 나라의 영광스러운 자리를 차지하기 위해 모든 것을 버릴 준비를 하고서 말입니다.

형제자매 여러분, 예수님은 무구하고 사랑스러운 아기로 이 세상에 왔지만 여전히 전능하신 하느님의 아드님이십니다. 그분은 우리가 죄를 이기고 당신과 영원히 일치하도록 우리에게 ‘은총과 진리’를 주시는 분이십니다(요한 1,17). 또한 세상의 마지막 날에 산 이와 죽은 이를 심판하러 다시 오실 분이십니다. 예수님을 영접하는 것은 구유에 누우신 아기를 바라볼 때 느끼는 행복감 이상으로 훨씬 대단한 것임이 분명합니다!

성 요한에 따르면 예수님을 믿고 영접하는 것은 이 세상이 가져다주는 사라질 영광과 변하기 쉬운 희망을 훨씬 넘어 최고의 자리에 그분을 모시는 것이라고 했습니다. 그것은 그분의 목소리를 듣고, 그분의 뜻에 따르며, 그분의 사랑이 우리를 변화시키도록 내어맡기는 것을 의미합니다(요한 14,23). 이는 우리가 자기중심적인 생활을 버리고 대신 성령을 따라 사는 것을 뜻합니다(7,37-39). 그리고 무엇보다도 그것은 ‘생명의 빵’인 예수님께 철저히 만족하는 것을 의미합니다(6,35).

그러므로 오늘 성탄을 찬양하면서 우리도 예수님과 한 형제로 하느님의 자녀가 됨을 기뻐합시다. 이 작은 아이가 이 세상에 와서 우리에게 가져다줄 모든 것을 받아들입시다!

“예수님, 우리 안에 오심을 찬송합니다!

오늘부터 제 생애의 모든 날 동안

매일같이 열린 마음과 기쁜 영혼으로 당신을 영접하기를 원합니다!”

14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. ... 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known. (Jn 1:1-18)

To all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God. (John 1:12)

This one, simple verse tells us why Jesus was born—so that we could become children of God. Could there possibly be a greater Christmas gift? All we have to do is receive him and believe in him.

How do you welcome a guest into your home? Don’t you try to make him or her feel welcomed and comfortable? What if this guest had something that you desperately needed? Wouldn’t you go out of your way more than usual? This is how Jesus wants us to welcome him today—with arms open to receive his salvation; with a willing heart to embrace his counsel and protection; and ready to drop everything to take our place of honor in his kingdom.

Brothers and sisters, Jesus came as an innocent, lovable baby, but he is still the almighty Son of God. He is still the One who gives us the "grace and truth" we need to overcome sin and become united with him forever (John 1:17). He is still the One who will come back at the end of time to judge the living and the dead. Clearly, receiving Jesus means so much more than a sense of happiness when we look at a manger scene!

According to St. John, believing in Jesus and receiving him means putting him first, far ahead of the fading glory and shifting hopes offered by this world. It means listening to his voice, doing his will, and letting his love transform us (John 14:23). It means laying down our self-directed lives and following his Spirit instead (7:37-39). And, best of all, it means being completely satisfied by him, the Bread of Life (6:35).

So as we celebrate Christmas today, let’s rejoice that we can be made into children of God—coheirs with Christ himself. Let’s embrace everything that this little child came to give us.
