성 스테파노 대축일

제1독서 사도 6,8-10; 7,54-59

복    음 마태 10,17-22

55그러나 스테파노는 성령이 충만하였다. 그가 하늘을 유심히 바라보니, 하느님의 영광과 하느님 오른쪽에 서 계신 예수님이 보였다. 56그래서 그는 “보십시오, 하늘이 열려 있고 사람의 아들이 하느님 오른쪽에 서 계신 것이 보입니다.” 하고 말하였다. 57그들은 큰 소리를 지르며 귀를 막았다. 그리고 일제히 스테파노에게 달려들어, 58그를 성 밖으로 몰아내고서는 그에게 돌을 던졌다. 그 증인들은 겉옷을 벗어 사울이라는 젊은이의 발 앞에 두었다. (사도 6,8-10; 7,54-59)

과연 누가 스테파노보다 더 기꺼이 죽음을 받아들일 수 있었겠습니까? 스테파노처럼 돌에 맞아 죽으면서 누가 그렇게 평화롭고, 심지어 기쁘기조차 할 수 있었겠습니까? 스테파노는 그의 일생 동안 매일 예수님과 함께 길을 걸었기 때문에 그럴 수 있었습니다. 그는 날이면 날마다 기도 중에 하느님 옥좌에 닿고 싶어 했습니다. 예루살렘 교회를 위하여 봉사할 때에도 그는 하느님의 은총과 자비를 구했습니다. 그의 마지막 날에 희망을 잃지 않고 신념을 굽히지 않도록 그를 지켜준 것도 바로 이 은총이었습니다.

여러분은 왜 루카가 ‘스테파노는 성령이 충만했다(사도 6,5; 7,55)’는 말을 두 번이나 했다고 생각합니까? 스테파노를 소개하면서 그 부제의 평소의 성격에 대하여 이야기했는데, 그러고 나서 또다시 그의 순교에 대하여 언급할 때도 성령의 특별한 은총이 스테파노를 강인하게 만들었다고 말할 수 있겠습니까?

이 얼마나 고무적인 이야기입니까? 우리가 살아가면서 위기의 순간에 직면할 때, 하느님께서는 여전히 우리를 지켜주시고 결코 버리지 않으신다는 것을 우리에게 강하게 깨우쳐 주십니다. 위기의 순간들마다 하느님께서는 스테파노에게 하셨던 것처럼 성령의 특별한 ‘후원’을 쏟아 주실 것입니다. 그리하여 우리는 그분의 목소리를 듣고, 그분의 위로를 받고 나아가 그분의 말씀을 선포할 수 있게 됩니다.

성탄을 지낸 이즈음에는 최고조에 달했던 기분도 누그러져서, 새해에는 우리가 어떻게 바뀌는 것이 좋을까 고민하게 됩니다. 내년에는 하느님의 현존에 조금 더 가까이 다가서기로 결심하면 어떨까요? 어떤 도전이나 위기에 직면해도 그분의 성령에 마음을 열 수 있도록, 매일 그분과 함께 시간을 보내겠다고 결심할 수는 없을까요? 이것은 우리가 날마다 기도를 드리겠다고 결심하는 것일 수도 있지만, 또한 예수님을 하루 종일 우리의 생각 속에 초대한다는 것을 의미하기도 합니다. 그 날의 즐거움과 놀라움뿐만 아니라 좌절과 죄, 두려움을 그분과 함께 나누는 것을 의미합니다. 스테파노 성인처럼 우리가 매일의 삶 속에서 더 많이 예수님과 함께 걸으면 걸을수록, 시험에 들었을 때 더 강하게 주님을 체험할 수 있을 것입니다.

“성령이여, 오시어 저를 당신 사랑의 불로 채워주십시오.

예수님만이 저의 가장 큰 사랑이시며

그밖에는 다 그에 비할 데 없음을 일깨워 주십시오.”

55But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; 56and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God." 57But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him. 58Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. (Ac 6:8-10; 7:54-59)

How could anyone so willingly embrace the death that Stephen faced? How could anyone be so peaceful—even joyful—as he is being stoned to death? Stephen could do this only because he had walked with Jesus every other day of his life. Day in and day out, he sought to touch the throne of God in prayer. Even as he waited tables for the Jerusalem church, he sought grace and mercy from God. And it is that same grace that kept him hopeful and steadfast on his final day.

Why do you think Luke tells us twice that Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5; 7:55)? Is it possible that when he introduced Stephen, Luke was talking about the deacon’s day-to-day disposition—and then when he recounted Stephen’s martyrdom, he spoke of a special gift of the Spirit that made Stephen stand strong?

What a great source of encouragement for us! When we face crisis points in our lives, God can move powerfully to remind us that he is still in control and that he has not abandoned us. At these moments, he will pour out a special "boost" from the Holy Spirit, just as he did for Stephen, so that we can hear his voice, know his comfort, and even proclaim his words.

During this time after Christmas, which can be anti-climactic, we tend to consider resolutions of how we will change in the new year. Can we decide to stay close to the presence of God a little bit more next year? Can we resolve to spend time with him every day so that we will be open to his Spirit during whatever challenges or crises we may face? This may involve a decision to pray every day, but it also means inviting Jesus into our thoughts during the day. It means sharing with him the frustrations, guilt, and fears—as well as the joys and surprises—of the day. Like St. Stephen, the more we walk with Jesus in our everyday lives, the more powerfully we will experience him when we face a test.
