제1독서 1요한 1,1-4

2그래서 그 여자는 시몬 베드로와 예수님께서 사랑하신 다른 제자에게 달려가서 말하였다. “누가 주님을 무덤에서 꺼내 갔습니다. 어디에 모셨는지 모르겠습니다.” 3베드로와 다른 제자는 밖으로 나와 무덤으로 갔다. 4두 사람이 함께 달렸는데, 다른 제자가 베드로보다 빨리 달려 무덤에 먼저 다다랐다. (요한 20,2-8)

요한 성인이 이룬 놀라운 업적이 아무리 많다 해도 - 실제로 많습니다만 - 그는 아마도 그의 열정 때문에 가장 많이 알려지고 또 사랑받을 것입니다. 놀랍지 않습니까? 요한은 초기 그리스도교의 선구자들 중의 한 사람이었습니다. 그는 소아시아 전역에 걸쳐 교회를 세우고 이끌었습니다. 그는 나자렛 예수의 말씀과 행적을 가장 먼저 그리고 가장 상세하게 경험한 사람들 중의 한명이기도 합니다. 그런데 우리가 그를 가장 잘 기억하는 것은 이런 사실보다도 그의 열정적인 사랑 때문입니다. 오늘의 복음 말씀에서도 예수님이 죽음에서 정말로 다시 살아나셨는지 보러 베드로를 제치고 먼저 달려간 요한의 열정을 발견합니다. 요한은 그것이 진실이라는 것을 너무나 믿고 싶었기에 자신의 감정을 주체할 수가 없었던 것입니다.  

예수님을 향한 요한의 열정은 그가 처음 주님을 만났을 때로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 갈릴래아 바닷가에서 요한은 예수님의 부름을 받자 아버지의 품, 집, 생계의 터전이 보장해주는 안전을 버리고 떠났습니다. 그리고 다시는 뒤돌아보지 않았습니다. 또한 어떤 마을에서 예수님을 맞으려 하지 않자 그 사람들에게 하늘에서 불이 내리도록 빌었던 데에서도 우리는 요한의 열정을 봅니다. 그리고 이 열정은 최후의 만찬 때에 예수님의 가슴에 기대어 있는 모습에서 다시 볼 수 있습니다.

이러한 요한의 모습은 그가 얼마나 집중해서 예수님의 설교와 가르침을 들었는지를 말해줍니다. 예수님께서 사람들을 고쳐 주시고 구해 주시는 것을 그는 얼마나 가까이에서 보았을까요. 우리가 성탄 시기에 요한의 축일을 기념하는 것도 이상한 일이 아닙니다. 성탄 시기는 바로 우리를 향한 예수님 자신의 열정적인 사랑이 그 초점이니까요.

예수님을 향한 요한의 열정은 우리의 것이 될 수도 있습니다. 우리가 항상 존재하는 하느님의 은총에 협력할 때, 우리는 하느님을 더욱 더 분명히 알게 될 것입니다. 우리를 향한 하느님의 열정을 느끼게 될 것이고, 그 열정은 우리 가슴 속에 불을 붙일 것입니다. 하느님께 아주 조금만 순종하고, 자신을 내어맡기고, 협력하는 것만으로도 우리 가슴은 따뜻해질 것입니다. 하느님은 우리에게서 많은 것을 바라시지 않습니다. 그저 열린 마음과 유연한 의지면 됩니다. 그러니 오늘 열렬히 예수님을 찾으십시오. 우리 모두가 바로 요한처럼 주님의 사랑받는 제자가 될 수 있습니다!

“주님, 저를 향한 당신의 오롯한 헌신에 감사드립니다.

성령의 도우심으로 저도 오로지 당신만을 향하게 하소서.”

2So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. 3Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. 4They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. (Jn 20:2-8)

No matter how many remarkable accomplishments can be attributed to St. John—and there are many—he is probably best known and loved for his passion. Isn’t that amazing? He was one of the pioneers of primitive Christianity. He founded and led churches throughout Asia Minor. He was even one of the earliest and most detailed witnesses to the words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth. And yet it is for his passionate love that we remember him best. We catch a glimpse of that passion in today’s Gospel as we read about how he outran Peter to see if Jesus really had risen from the dead. John so wanted to believe that it was true, he couldn’t contain himself.

John’s passion for Jesus stretched back to his initial encounter with the Lord. On the banks of the Sea of Galilee, he left the security of father, home, and livelihood at Jesus’ invitation—and he never looked back. We also see his passion when he sought to call down fire from heaven against some people who refused to welcome Jesus into their town. And this passion shows up again at the Last Supper, when he rested against Jesus’ breast.

Such a portrait of John tells us how intently he listened to Jesus’ preaching and teaching; how closely he watched as Jesus healed and delivered people, and how open and teachable John was whenever Jesus spoke to him. Now wonder we celebrate his feast day during the season of Christmas—a season so focused on Jesus’ own passionate love for us!

John’s passion for Jesus can be ours, too. As we cooperate with the ever-present grace of God, we can come to know him more and more clearly. We can come in touch with his passion for us, and that passion will enkindle a fire in our own hearts. Even the smallest step of obedience, surrender, or cooperation with God can warm our hearts. God doesn’t need much from us, just an open heart and a flexible will. So seek Jesus fervently today. We can all become beloved disciples just like John!
