무죄한 어린이들의 순교 축일

제1독서 1요한 1,5-2,2

복    음 마태 2,13-18

16그때에 헤로데는 박사들에게 속은 것을 알고 크게 화를 내었다. 그리고 사람들을 보내어, 박사들에게서 정확히 알아낸 시간을 기준으로, 베들레헴과 그 온 일대에 사는 두 살 이하의 사내아이들을 모조리 죽여 버렸다. 17그리하여 예레미야 예언자를 통하여 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다. 18“라마에서 소리가 들린다. 울음소리와 애끊는 통곡 소리. 라헬이 자식들을 잃고 운다. 자식들이 없으니 위로도 마다한다.” (마태 2,13-18)

성가정의 이집트 도피와 헤로데의 유아 대학살은 어둠과 빛의 싸움을 극적으로 보여줍니다. 그러나 베들레헴에서 갈바리아까지 예수님의 전 생애가 비록 박해의 상징 아래 드러나 있다해도 인간의 힘이든 악마의 힘이든 그 어떤 권세도 주님이 와서 이루고자 하시는 일을 막지는 못하였습니다. “그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치고 있지만 어둠은 그를 깨닫지 못하였다(요한 1,5).”

왜 헤로데는 이 보잘것없는 아기를 두려워했을까요? 헤로데는 예수님이 땅이나 왕권이 아니라 마음과 영혼을 차지하기 위하여 오셨다는 것을 몰랐습니다. 그래서 단 한 명의 아기를 없애기 위하여, 수많은 생명을 죽이도록 명령하는 것을 서슴지 않았습니다. 두려움이 그의 마음을 파괴하였기 때문에 저항하지 못하는 무력한 어린 아이들을 죽였습니다. 헤로데는 자신의 생명을 연장하기 위하여, 생명이신 주님을 죽이려고 하였던 것입니다.

헤로데가 자신의 이기적인 지상 목적을 달성하기 위하여 무력과 잔인한 방법을 동원하였지만 하느님께서는 이 비극을 하느님 나라의 승리로 이끄셨습니다. 죄 없는 어린아이들은 하느님 은총의 힘을 드러내는 증인이 되었습니다. 그 아이들은 비록  자신들은 알지 못했지만 그리스도를 위하여 죽었습니다. 아직 말도 할 줄 모르는 아이들이었지만, 예수님은 그 아이들을 당신의 증인으로 삼으셨습니다. 아무 무기도 쓸 줄 몰랐지만 이제 그들은 승리의 종려나무 가지를 들고 있습니다. 예수님은 그들의 영혼을 악마의 속박에서 해방시켜 하느님의 자녀로 받아들이셨습니다. 이제 그들은 승리하여 하느님의 영광과 권세를 그분과 함께 누리고 있습니다.

바오로 사도는 우리가 패배했다고 느낄 때조차도 실은 예수님의 승리를 함께 나누고 있다는 것을 우리에게 일깨워 줍니다. “하느님을 사랑하는 이들, 그분의 계획에 따라 부르심을 받은 이들에게는 모든 것이 함께 작용하여 선을 이룬다는 것을 우리는 압니다(로마 8,28).” 좌절, 실패, 역경, 그 밖의 우리가 이 세상에서 겪을 수 있는 그 어떤 것도 우리를 그리스도에게서 갈라놓지는 못합니다. 하느님의 사랑은 우리 개개인의 삶과 이 세상 전체에서 이 모든 것을 딛고 승리할 것입니다.

오늘날 우리는 헤로데의 대학살보다 더 나쁜 악과 마주하고 있습니다. 그것은 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 태중의 무죄한 아이들을 학살하는 것입니다. 무엇이 이 죽음의 문화를 바꿔 놓을 수 있을까요? 이번에도 역시 하느님의 사랑이 그렇게 할 것이고 승리할 것입니다! 그렇습니다. 실로 엄청난 악이 저질러지고 있습니다. 우리는 이에 대항하여 기도해야 하고 이런 문화를 변화시키기 위하여 노력해야 합니다. 그러나 우리에게 반대하는 사람들로 인한 좌절이나 절망, 증오 때문에 그렇게 하지는 마십시오. 기억하십시오. 그리스도의 빛을 끌 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없습니다.

“하늘에 계신 우리 아버지,

낙태로 죽은 모든 어린 생명을 위로하시고

그들을 당신 옥좌로 불러올려 주십시오.”

16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. 17Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.(Mt 2:13-18)

he flight of the Holy Family into Egypt and Herod’s massacre of innocent children is a dramatic illustration of the battle between darkness and light. Yet even though Jesus’ whole life, from Bethlehem to Calvary, unfolded under the sign of persecution, no powers, whether human or demonic, could undo the work he came to accomplish. "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it" (John 1:5).
Why did Herod fear this little baby? He didn’t know that Jesus had come to conquer hearts and souls, not lands and thrones. To destroy one child, Herod did not hesitate to command the deaths of many. He destroyed weak and defenseless children because fear had destroyed his own heart. To prolong his own life, he tried to kill Life itself.

Even though Herod used force and cruelty to further his selfish, earthly purposes, God turned this tragedy into triumph for the heavenly kingdom. The Holy Innocents bear witness to the power of God’s grace. They died for Christ, even though they did not know it. They could not yet speak, but Jesus made them fit witnesses to himself. They could not wield any weapons, but they now bear the palm of victory. Jesus freed their souls from captivity to the devil and made them adopted children of God. Now they share his glory and reign with him in triumph.

St. Paul reminds us that we too share in Jesus’ victory, even when we feel defeated: "We know that all things work together for good for those who love God" (Romans 8:28). Setbacks, failures, adversity—nothing we may face in this life need separate us from Christ. His love can triumph over all, both in our individual lives and in the world as a whole.

Today we face an evil far worse than Herod’s massacre: the slaughter of countless innocent unborn children. What can reverse this culture of death? God’s love can and will triumph, even here! Yes, a great evil is occurring. Yes, we must pray against it and seek to change the culture. But let us never do so out of a sense of frustration, desperation, or hatred of those opposed to us. Remember: Nothing can snuff out the light of Christ.

comfort all the children lost to abortion.

Bring them right up to your throne!"
