성탄 팔일축제 내 제5일

25그런데 예루살렘에 시메온이라는 사람이 있었다. … 26성령께서는 그에게 주님의 그리스도를 뵙기 전에는 죽지 않으리라고 알려 주셨다. 27그가 성령에 이끌려 성전으로 들어갔다. 그리고 아기에 관한 율법의 관례를 준수하려고 부모가 아기 예수님을 데리고 들어오자, 28그는 아기를 두 팔에 받아 안고 이렇게 하느님을 찬미하였다. (루카 2,22-35)
당신은 하느님께서 일하시는 방식을 보고 놀란 적이 있습니까? 없다면 위의 구절을 좀더 자세히 읽어 보십시오. 물론 그 날 성령에 가득 찬 시메온이 성전에 들어가서 예수님을 보고 놀란 것은 분명합니다. 그가 메시아를 보기 전에는 죽지 않으리라는 오랫동안 기다려온 예언이 예기치 않게 이루어진 것입니다. 그런데 사도들에게 성령이 내린 오순절 훨씬 이전에 예수님이 아직 어린 아기였을 때 시메온이 ‘성령이 충만하여’ 예수님을 믿는 사람이 되었다는 사실을 깨닫는다면 아마 우리도 조금쯤 놀랄 것입니다.
신약에 나오는 인물들 중에 ‘정상 경로’ 밖에서 성령에 이끌린 사람은 분명 시메온 한 사람만은 아니었습니다. 로마의 백인대장인 코르넬리우스는 의롭고 하느님을 경외하는 사람이었습니다. 그는 세례를 받지도 않고 복음을 전부 들어보지도 않았지만 성령이 그에게 내려와서 하느님을 찬송하고 신령한 언어로 말하기 시작하였습니다!(사도 10,44-46) 뿐만 아니라 구약에서 성령이 힘차게 활동한 인물들은 예언자들 외에도 요셉, 모세, 여호수아, 삼손, 다윗, 다니엘 등 수십 명에 달합니다. 모두 성령이 강림하시기 이전의 일입니다!
형제자매 여러분, 하느님은 한계가 있는 우리의 기대나 그분은 어떻게 하셔야 한다는 우리의 견해에 얽매이는 분이 아닙니다. 우리는 하느님께서는 어떤 특정한 방식으로만, 혹은 영적으로 ‘성숙한’ 사람들을 위해서만 일하신다고 잘못 생각하기 쉽습니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 종종 당신이 먼저 움직이시기 전에, 우리가 자신의 나약함을 인정하고 “주님, 저는 할 수 없습니다!”라며 소리치기를 기다리고 계십니다. 하늘은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다고 하지만, 완전히 무력한 사람들을 주님은 더욱 더 기꺼이 도우십니다!
성탄절은 지나갔지만, 하느님께서는 아직도 우리를 축복해주고 싶어 하십니다. 당신은 정말로 무엇이 필요합니까? 어쩌면 당신은 치유가 필요한 중병을 앓고 있는 사람을 알고 있을지도 모릅니다. 어쩌면 여러 해 동안 당신의 친척 중 한 사람이 주님께 마음을 열기를 기도해 왔는지도 모릅니다. 혹은 계속해서 당신을 걸려 넘어지게 하는 죄악의 그림자를 이겨내기를 바라고 있지는 않습니까? 하느님을 가두어두지 마십시오. 대신 시메온이 그랬던 것처럼, 예상치 못한 것을 기대하십시오.
“성령이시여, 제게 당신의 사랑을 보여 주심에 감사드립니다.
제 온 마음을 당신께 바치며 당신께서
제 삶의 어떤 험한 산도 치워주실 것을 믿습니다!”
25Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon.…And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord? Christ. 27And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, 28he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,… (Lk 2:22-35)
Does the way God works ever surprise you? If not, read this passage more closely. No doubt, Simeon was surprised when he came to the Temple that day, saw Jesus, and was filled with the Holy Spirit. It was the unexpected fulfillment of a long awaited prophecy that he would not die until he saw the Messiah. We might be a bit surprised too, if we realize that Simeon became a "Spirit-filled"believer while Jesus was still an infant, well before the Holy Spirit was poured out on the apostles at Pentecost.
Simeon certainly wasn’t the only figure in the New Testament who was touched by the Spirit outside of "normal channels." Cornelius, a centurion from Rome, was an upright and God-fearing man, who had not been baptized nor heard the complete gospel, yet the Spirit fell on him and he began to praise God and speak in tongues! (Acts 10:44-46). There are dozens of Old Testament figures as well whom the Spirit used powerfully: Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Samson, David, and Daniel, not to mention the prophets—all before the Spirit was poured out!
Brothers and sisters, God is not bound by our limited expectations or by our opinion of how he should act. It can be so easy to fall into a trap of thinking that he works only in certain ways, or only for those who are spiritually "mature." Often, however, he is waiting for us to admit our weakness and to cry out, "I can’t do it, Lord!"before he can move. God may help those who help themselves, but even more so, he helps those who are completely helpless!
Christmas Day may have passed, but God still wants to bless us—maybe even surprise us with an unexpected outpouring of the Holy Spirit. What do you really need? Maybe you know someone with a serious illness who needs healing. Maybe you’ve been praying for years that a relative would give his heart to the Lord. Or maybe you are hoping for victory over a sinful area that keeps tripping you up. Don’t box God in. Instead, expect the unexpected—just as Simeon did.
"Holy Spirit, thank you for showing me your love.
I give you my whole heart
and I believe that you can move any mountain in my life!"
