29…“보라, 세상의 죄를 없애시는 하느님의 어린양이시다. 30 저분은, ‘내 뒤에 한 분이 오시는데, 내가 나기 전부터 계셨기에 나보다 앞서신 분이시다.’ 하고 내가 전에 말한 분이시다.…” 32요한은 또 증언하였다. “나는 성령께서 비둘기처럼 하늘에서 내려오시어 저분 위에 머무르시는 것을 보았다. 33나도 저분을 알지 못하였다. 그러나 물로 세례를 주라고 나를 보내신 그분께서 나에게 일러 주셨다. ‘성령이 내려와 어떤 분 위에 머무르는 것을 네가 볼 터인데, 바로 그분이 성령으로 세례를 주시는 분이다.’ 34과연 나는 보았다. 그래서 저분이 하느님의 아드님이시라고 내가 증언하였다.”(요한 1,29-34)

부모가 될 사람은 아기에게 가장 이상적인 이름을 지어주려고 몇 시간이고 책장을 뒤지거나 인터넷을 탐색하곤 하지요. 부모들이 찾는 것은 듣기 좋을 뿐 아니라 의미를 지닌 이름입니다. 예를 들면 ‘클라라’는 찬란히 빛난다는 뜻이고, ‘드루’는 신뢰할 만하다는 뜻이지요.

마리아와 요셉은 그런 일로 신경 쓸 필요가 없었습니다. 아기가 태어나기 전에 천사가 아기의 이름을 일러주었으니까요(루카 1,31; 마태 1,21). 천사는‘하느님께서 구원하신다’라는 의미를 지닌 예수라 부르라 하였습니다. 대부분의 유다 가정에서처럼 이 아기의 이름도 그가 장차 어떤 인물이 될 것인지를 말해 주는 징표로 이해되었습니다. 그리고 예수님께서는 어느 누구보다도 힘있게 당신의 이름이 뜻하는 것을 완전히 이루셨습니다. 예수님께서는 문자 그대로 인류를 죄에서 구원하셨습니다!

예수님께서 우리를 위하여 십자가 위에서 죽으심으로써 당신의 운명을 이미 완수하셨다면 우리는 왜 아직도 그분의 이름을 기념하는 것일까요? 그것은 우리가 그분의 이름으로 구원받기 때문입니다. 클레르보의 베르나르도 성인은 예수님의 숭고한 이름이 우리 안에 거룩한 생각을 일으켜 주고, 우리의 영혼을 고귀한 느낌으로 채워 주고, 덕목을 길러 주고, 선한 일을 행하게 해 주고, 순수한 애정을 길러 준다고 하였습니다. 예수라는 이름은 영혼의 만병통치약이지요.

물론, 여기서 베르나르도는 예수라는 이름이 마술적 주문처럼 작용한다고 말한 것은 아닙니다. 베르나르도는 오늘의 복음에 나오는 요한처럼 성령의 계시와 능력 없이는 예수님의 이름이 아무 힘도 갖지 못함을 알았습니다. 가톨릭 교회 교리서는 다음과 같이 가르칩니다. “‘예수님’을 부르면서 기도드리는 것은 예수님께 기도하는 것이요, 우리 안에 계신 그분을 부르는 것이다. 예수님의 이름만이 그 이름이 의미하는 현존을 내포한다. 예수님께서는 부활하셨으며, 그분의 이름을 부르는 사람은 누구나, 그를 사랑하시고 그를 위해 자신을 내어 주신 하느님의 아들을 맞이하는 것이다(가톨릭 교회 교리서, 2666항).” 그러니 오늘 성령께 당신 앞에 예수님을 보여달라고 청하십시오. 신앙과 믿음으로 예수님의 이름을 부르십시오. 당신이 어떤 상황에 처하든 확신과 기쁨이 당신 마음에 가득 찰 수 있도록, 성령께서 당신에게 예수님을 보여주실 것이라고 믿으십시오.

“주 예수님, 당신의 이름이 저의 구원이시기에

저는 당신의 엄위와 전능을 찬양합니다!

예수라는 주님의 이름이 저의 생각과 입술과 마음 속에

영원히 깃들게 해 주십시오.”

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.'

31 I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel." 32 And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."      ▶ENGLISH BIBLE◀

Parents-to-be often spend hours and hours flipping through books or searching the Internet for that perfect name for their child. They are looking for a name that not only sounds pleasant but has significance: Claire, for example, means brilliant, and Drew means trustworthy.

Mary and Joseph didn't have to bother with all of that. An angel told them their son's name before he was even born (Luke 1:31; Matthew 1:21). He was to be called Jesus, which means God saves. As in most Jewish families, the name of this child was seen as a sign of what kind of a man he would grow into. And more powerfully than all others, Jesus fully embodied all his name said he would be: He literally saved humanity from their sins!

So why do we still celebrate Jesus' name today if he has already fulfilled his destiny by dying on the cross for us? Because his is the name by which we are saved. According to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the sweet name of Jesus produces in us holy thoughts, fills the soul with noble sentiments, strengthens virtue, begets good works, and nourishes pure affections. This name is the cure for all diseases of the soul.

Of course, Bernard was not implying that the name of Jesus worked like a magical spell. Like John in today's gospel, he knew that without the Holy Spirit's revelation and power, Jesus' name had no power at all. The Catechism teaches us: To pray 'Jesus' is to invoke him and to call him within us. His name is the only one that contains the presence it signifies. Jesus is the Risen One, and whoever invokes the name of Jesus is welcoming the Son of God who loved him and who gave himself up for him (CCC, 2666). So ask the Spirit to reveal Jesus to you today. Call upon his name with faith and trust. Believe that the Spirit will reveal Jesus to you in a way that fills your heart with confidence and joy, no matter what situation you may face.

Lord Jesus, I glory in your majesty and might,

for your name is my salvation!

May your name, Jesus,

be ever in my thoughts, on my lips, and in my heart.
