As we read about Jesus hearing a voice from heaven, perhaps we are wishing that we too could hear God in some spectacular way. Maybe we are hoping for some kind of spiritual breakthrough in our lives. Or perhaps we have serious needs in our lives, and we'd like God to speak more directly to us about them.
If that's the case, then it might be helpful to look at what God is saying here, rather than at how dramatically he delivers his message. The Father is telling us who Jesus is: He is not just a great prophet and teacher, he is the Son of God. All of his power and authority come directly from the Father and are meant to bring us into God's presence. The very name of Christ means anointed one, because the Father has anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit, to bring the whole world into a relationship with him!
It is the anointing of the Holy Spirit that gave Jesus the power to proclaim release to the captives, to restore sight to the blind and to free the oppressed (Isaiah 61:1-2). It's the power of the Holy Spirit that enabled the apostles to start spreading the gospel. And it's the same power and anointing that are at work in the church and in our lives today. Speaking through his Spirit, God is still on a mission to bring people to repentance and to joy, hope, and freedom in Christ.
You may not have heard a voice from the clouds lately, but have you listened for him here on earth? Do you hear the promptings of his Spirit in your conscience? Have you felt a prompting to do something helpful for a neighbor? Have you heard something in Scripture, or perhaps from a friend, that really touched you and lifted up your heart? It's very likely that the Lord has been speaking and perhaps he's already given you the answers you are seeking. Maybe you just need to quiet down, listen, and obey. He is a patient Father, full of compassion, and he is more than willing to repeat himself. We are his beloved sons and daughters, and he is well-pleased with our willing hearts!
Lord, I want to hear your voice
and to follow wherever you are leading me
even if it's to something completely unknown.
I give you my life, Lord,
and I say 'yes' to you today!
 

하늘에서 들려온 소리를 들으신 예수님에 관한 이야기를 읽고 있으면 우리도 그렇게 극적으로 하느님의 목소리를 듣고 싶어 할지 모르지요. 우리는 어쩌면 인생에서의 영적 도약을 소망하고 있거나, 심각한 인생고를 겪으며 하느님께서 그 어려움들에 관해 좀 더 직접적으로 말씀해 주시기를 바라고 있을지 모릅니다.
사정이 그렇다면, 하느님께서 얼마나 ‘극적으로’ 당신의 메시지를 전달하시는가에 신경을 쓰기보다는 여기서 하시려는 말씀이 ‘무엇인지’ 귀 기울이는 것이 더 유익할 것입니다. 하느님 아버지께서는 우리에게 예수님이 누구신지 말씀하고 계십니다. 예수님은 위대한 예언자이며 스승일 뿐 아니라 하느님의 아들이십니다. 그분의 모든 힘과 권위는 직접 아버지께로부터 오며 우리를 하느님의 현존으로 인도해 줍니다. 그리스도라는 이름은 바로 기름 부음 받은 자라는 뜻입니다. 아버지께서는 성령을 통하여 예수님에게 기름 부어 주심으로써 온 세상을 당신과 올바른 관계에 놓아주셨습니다!
사로잡힌 이들에게 석방을 선포하고, 눈 먼 이들을 눈뜨게 해 주며, 억눌린 이들을 풀어 보내는 힘(이사 61,1-2)을 예수님에게 준 것은 성령의 기름 부음이었고 사도들에게 복음 전파의 능력을 준 것도 성령의 힘이었습니다. 바로 그 성령의 힘과 기름 부음이 오늘날 교회와 우리의 삶 안에서 활동하고 있습니다. 하느님께서는 오늘도 여전히 성령을 통하여 말씀하시면서, 사람들을 그리스도 안에서 누리는 회개와 기쁨, 희망과 자유로 인도하고 계십니다.
당신은 요즘 구름 위에서 들려오는 소리를 듣지 못했을지 모릅니다. 그렇다면, 이 세상에서 들려오는 주님의 소리에는 귀 기울이고 있습니까? 당신의 마음속에서 성령의 재촉하심을 듣습니까? 이웃에게 도움이 되는 일을 실천하라는 성령의 재촉을 감지합니까? 성경 안에서 또는 친구에게서 당신을 깊이 감동시키고 당신의 마음을 하늘로 향하게 하는 어떤 소리를 들었습니까? 주님께서는 당신에게 말씀하고 계시며 당신이 구하는 답을 이미 주셨을 것입니다. 당신에게 필요한 것은 마음을 가다듬고 경청하며 순종하는 것일지도 모릅니다. 주님께서는 같은 말을 되풀이하시기에 앞서 참아 주시며 자비가 넘치시는 아버지십니다. 우리는 하느님 아버지의 사랑스런 아들과 딸들입니다. 아버지께서는 우리의 자발적인 마음을 매우 흡족해 하시지요!
“주님, 저는 주님의 목소리를 듣고 싶습니다.
그리고 주님께서 이끄시는 곳이면 어디든지,
전혀 모르는 곳이라 할지라도,
기꺼이 가겠습니다. 주님,
저는 오늘 저의 삶을 당신께 봉헌하면서
당신의 목소리에 ‘예’라고 응답합니다.”
