ou may know today as Epiphany, but did you know that it is also called the Feast of the Gentiles? That's to remind us that among the first people to recognize Jesus as the Messiah were pagans from the East. We don't know much about them except that they were learned men who studied the stars. They were certainly not Jewish, and may have been priests of Ahura Mazda, the Zoroastrian god of the ancient Persians.
Imagine their dedication! These men spent months traveling to see Jesus and not on highways but across deserts. They brought with them costly gifts, not even knowing if they would ever reach their destination. And they knew nothing about Christ other than that he was the promised king of the Jews. They may have been considered “outside” of God’s covenant with Israel, but “inside,” in their hearts, they were as close to God as they could be.
The example of the Magi should teach us that God does not care about distinctions like Gentile, Jew, or Greek and neither should we. If God desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4), then we should think no differently. We may tend to steer clear of those who seem far from God, but they may ironically be the ones who have the biggest hearts for the Lord!
We all know people we might never expect to come to Christ: the acquaintance who is in a questionable living situation, the perpetually nasty neighbor, or the intellectual coworker who wants nothing to do with Christianity. But how do we know they don't have a future saint hiding within them? St. Paul started as a fanatical hater of Christians, and St. Augustine began as a hedonist who stubbornly refused to convert. After all, none of us is perfect, so we should not judge those who are different from us. So let's ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with his compassion, a compassion which puts no limits on love.
Lord, send your Spirit to
all nations and all hearts; to those who know you,
that they will reach out to the lost;
and to those who don't know you,
that they will hear you calling them to salvation!

당신은 오늘이 주님 공현 대축일이라는 것을 알고 계시지요. 그러나 이교도들의 축일이라는 것도 알고 계십니까? 이교도들의 축일이라 함은 예수님을 메시아로 받아들인 초대 교회 사람들 중에는 동방에서 온 이교도들도 있었다는 사실을 상기하기 위한 것입니다. 우리는 그분들이 별을 연구한 박사들이라는 것 말고는 그들에 관해 별로 아는 것이 없습니다. 그들이 유다인이 아니었던 것만은 확실합니다. 아마 고대 페르시아인들이 믿던 조로아스터교 신, 아후라 마즈다의 사제들일 수도 있습니다.
그들의 헌신을 상상해 보십시오! 그들은 예수님을 보려고 여러 달 동안 고속도로가 아닌 험한 사막을 가로질러 길고 긴 여행을 하였습니다. 그들은 과연 목적지에 도달할 수 있을지 알지도 못하면서 값진 선물을 가지고 왔습니다. 더구나 그들은 그리스도가 약속된 유다인들의 왕이라는 것 외에는 아는 것이 없었습니다. 그들은 이스라엘과 맺으신 하느님의 계약 ‘밖’의 사람들로 간주되었지만, 마음으로는 할 수 있는 한 하느님과 가까이 있는 계약 ‘안’의 사람들이었습니다.
동방박사들의 예증은 하느님께서는 이교도, 유다인, 그리스인을 차별하지 않으시며 우리도 그러하지 말아야 한다는 것을 가르쳐줍니다. 하느님께서 모든 사람이 구원을 받고 진리를 깨닫게 되기를 바라신다면(1티모 2,4), 우리도 이와 다른 식으로 생각해서는 안 됩니다. 우리에게는 하느님과 멀리 있는 것처럼 보이는 사람들을 피하려는 경향이 있습니다. 하지만 아이러니컬하게도 그들이 그 누구보다도 주님께 열린 마음을 가진 사람들일 수도 있습니다.
우리는 그리스도께 오리라고 기대할 수 없는 사람들을 알고 있습니다. 의심스러운 생활을 하는 사람, 늘 불쾌한 이웃, 그리스도교와 무관하게 살고 싶어 하는 지식인 동료 등. 그러나 그들 내면에 미래의 성인이 숨어 있는지 누가 압니까? 사도 바오로는 그리스도인들을 광신적으로 증오하는 사람이었고 아우구스티노 성인은 고집스럽게 회심을 거부한 쾌락주의자로 출발하였지요. 아무튼 우리 중 누구도 완전하지 않습니다. 그러므로 우리는 우리와 다른 사람들을 판단하지 말아야 합니다. 끝없는 사랑의 연민으로 우리를 채워 주시도록 성령께 간구합시다.
“주님, 모든 나라와 모든 사람의 마음 속에
성령을 보내 주십시오.
또한 당신을 알고 있는 이들에게 성령을 보내시어
그들이 길 잃은 양들을 찾아 나서게 하시고,
당신을 모르는 이들에게도 성령을 보내시어
구원으로 초대하시는 당신의 목소리를
듣게 하여 주십시오.”
