When Jesus entered the synagogue at Capernaum, he probably attracted little attention. He looked and sounded like any ordinary Galilean (Isaiah 53:2; Matthew 26:73). He didn't dress like a scholar or a dignitary or a priest. Outwardly, nothing indicated that Jesus possessed any special power or authority. At least, not until he began to teach. Then the people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority (Mark 1:22).
Authority is much more than the right to tell others what to do or the power to make them do it. Authority flows from an inner conviction. It isn't something imposed from outside but something that people ascribe to you because of your own inner strength, assuredness, and confidence. All this makes sense when we think about Jesus. He never scared people into following him. He simply spoke from his own convictions, and his words pierced their hearts.
All this sounds very logical and sensible nothing astounding at all. But it might astonish us to realize ‘we’ have that same authority! We can make the same profession of faith and the same witness to the love of God that Jesus made (John 14:12). He has given to us the same commission that Jesus gave the disciples to heal the sick, cast out demons, preach the gospel, make disciples of all nations (Luke 9:1-6; 10:1-17). This commission is not reserved for just a few. It is for everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord and lives in union with him.
We are all children of God and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17). We all share his power and authority not because of any special ability or training but because God is exceedingly generous! Do you believe that you can speak and act with his authority as you submit to the Holy Spirit? Do you trust that God will teach you how to walk with authority in this world? As you pray today, ask the Spirit to reveal the dignity you have in Christ. You are not just an ordinary person. You are his, and in him you can rise above sin and become an agent of change and transformation for those around you!
Jesus, I am in awe of you.
Help me to walk in confidence today
and every day. May the witness
of my life continually testify
to the truth of who you are.

예수님께서 카파르나움 회당에 들어가셨을 때 사람들의 관심을 그리 끌지 못했을 것입니다. 예수님께서는 평범한 갈릴래아 사람의 모습을 하고 계셨고 말씨도 그러하였으니까요(이사 53,2; 마태 26,73). 예수님께서는 학자나 고위 성직자 또는 사제의 옷차림을 하지 않으셨습니다. 겉으로 보기에는 그분께서 특별한 능력이나 권위를 가진 분임을 나타내는 것이 아무것도 없었으니까요. 적어도 사람들을 가르치기 시작하기 전까지는 말입니다. 그래서 사람들은 주님께서 권위를 가지고 가르치시는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐던 것입니다(마르 1,22).
 권위란 사람들에게 행동을 지시하는 권리나 사람들이 그 행동을 하게 만드는 권력 이상의 그 무엇입니다. 권위는 내면의 신념에서 오는 것입니다. 권위는 외부에서 주어지는 것이 아니라, 당신 안에 내재하는 힘과 자신감과 확신을 보고 사람들이 당신이 가지고 있다고 생각하는 그 무엇입니다. 예수님을 생각해 보면 이것은 정말 맞는 말입니다. 예수님께서 사람들을 겁주어서 당신을 따르게 한 것은 아닙니다. 예수님께서는 단지 신념으로 말씀하셨고, 그분의 말씀은 듣는 이들의 가슴 속을 파고들었습니다.
이런 말들은 상당히 논리적이고 합리적이고 조금도 놀랍게 들리지 않습니다. 그러나 ‘우리’도 그와 같은 권위를 가지고 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 된다면 놀라게 될 것입니다! 우리도 예수님께서 하신 것처럼 신앙을 고백하고 하느님의 사랑을 증언할 수 있습니다(요한 14,12). 하느님께서는 우리에게 예수님께서 당신 제자들에게 부여하신 것과 같은 사명, 곧 병자들을 고쳐주고 마귀를 쫓아내고 복음을 선포하고 모든 민족을 제자로 삼으라(루카 9,1-6; 10,1-17)는 사명을 주셨습니다. 이 사명은 몇몇 사람에게만 주어진 것이 아닙니다. 이 사명은 주님의 이름을 부르며 주님과 하나되어 사는 모든 사람을 위한 것입니다.
우리 모두는 하느님의 자녀들이고 그리스도와 더불어 공동 상속자들입니다(로마 8,16-17). 우리는 주님의 능력과 권위를 공유합니다. 그것은 어떤 특별한 기량이나 교육 때문이 아니라 하느님께서 무한히 관대한 분이시기 때문입니다! 성령께 복종할 때 당신도 예수님의 권위를 가지고 말하고 행동할 수 있다는 것을 믿습니까? 하느님께서 권위를 가지고 이 세상을 살아가는 법을 당신에게 가르쳐 주신다는 것을 믿습니까? 오늘 기도드릴 때 당신이 그리스도 안에서 갖고 있는 존엄을 보여 주십사고 성령께 청하십시오. 당신은 보통 사람이 아닙니다. 당신은 그리스도의 사람입니다. 그리스도 안에서 죄를 이겨낼 수 있으며 당신 주위의 사람들에게 변화와 변형을 가져오는 사람이 될 수 있습니다.
“예수님, 저는 주님을 경외합니다.
오늘도, 내일도, 그 다음 날도
주님께 대한 신뢰 안에 살도록 저를 도와주십시오.
제 삶으로써 주님이 누구이신지,
그 진리를 증언하게 해 주십시오.”
