Okay. Peter was married. This passage referring to his mother-in-law confirms it. So we might speculate: How often did he see his wife and family after he left everything to follow Jesus? How about the other apostles? In light of 1 Corinthians 9:5, did their wives travel with them? It's fun to think about these issues and try to speculate on the possible answers. Still, no matter what the situation really was, there can be no doubt that the apostles and many other disciples made a huge personal sacrifice to follow the Lord. In fact, Peter even spoke about how much they had given up to follow Jesus: everything (Matthew 19:27)!
Something about Jesus must have compelled the disciples to give up so much to follow him. Jesus' teachings and his miraculous works convinced them to give up their jobs, their homes, their familiar surroundings, and even their families to follow him wherever he went. It must surely have been their ‘experience’ of Jesus that helped them sacrifice so much for him even their very lives. And it wasn't just a one-time experience. As they saw more and more of who he was every day, their deepening relationship with him only served to confirm and strengthen their initial decision to give up so much for him.
What about you? Do you have an ongoing relationship with Jesus? Is your experience of him moving you to leave everything behind to follow him? Do you see him alive and at work in your life and in the world? If you feel this may be lacking in your life, ask Jesus to give you more. And for heaven's sake,
don't feel guilty for asking! Trust that Jesus wants to be generous with you. Believe that he wants to show you his glory and move you to give your whole life to him.
Don't be afraid to ask him to fill you with more of his presence. In faith, go ahead and tell him that you need to know him more and to touch his love more fully. Remember: Jesus demonstrated himself over and over again to his disciples. He was for the man and he is for us a great treasure to be discovered and rediscovered day after day after day.

그래요. 베드로는 결혼한 사람이었습니다. 복음에 나오는 장모에 대한 언급이 이를 뒷받침해 주고 있지요. 그래서 우리는 이런 생각을 해 볼 수 있습니다. ‘베드로가 모든 것을 버리고 예수님을 따른 뒤 얼마나 자주 부인과 가족들을 만났을까? 다른 사도들의 경우는 어떠하였을까? 코린토 첫째 서간 9장 5절에 언급된 대로 그들의 부인들도 함께 전교여행을 다녔을까?’ 이런 문제에 관해 생각해보고 그럴싸한 답을 추측해보는 것은 흥미로운 일입니다. 하지만 실제 상황이야 어떻든 간에 사도들과 다른 많은 제자들이 주님을 따르기 위해 일신상의 큰 희생을 감수한 것만은 틀림없습니다. 사실, 베드로는 예수님을 따르기 위해 그들이 얼마나 많은 것을 포기했는가에 대해 이렇게 말합니다. “보시다시피 저희는 ‘모든 것’을 버리고 주님을 따랐습니다!(마태 19,27)”
예수님의 무엇인가가 모든 것을 버리고 그를 따르도록 제자들의 마음을 끌어당겼을 것입니다. 예수님의 가르침과 여러 기적에 감화를 받은 그들은 직업, 가정, 익숙한 환경, 심지어는 가족들마저도 버리고 주님께서 가시는 곳이면 어디든지 따라다녔습니다. 심지어 자신들의 생명까지도 아끼지 않고 바치도록 한 것은 분명 예수님을 ‘체험’하였기 때문이었을 것입니다. 그 체험은 일회적인 것이 아니었습니다. 제자들은 날이 갈수록 주님이 누구신지 더 깊이 알게 되었고, 주님과의 관계가 날로 깊어지면서 스승을 위하여 모든 것을 바치기로 한 최초의 결심을 새삼 확인하고 굳건하게 하였습니다.
당신은 어떻습니까? 예수님과 지속적인 관계 속에 살고 있습니까? 주님을 체험하는 것이 그분을 따르기 위해 모든 것을 버리고 떠나도록 당신의 마음을 움직입니까? 당신의 삶과 이 세상 안에 살아계시며 활동하시는 주님을 봅니까? 그것이 부족하다고 느껴지면 예수님께 더 많은 은총을 청하십시오. 제발 청하는 것에 대해 죄스런 마음을 갖지 마십시오! 그리고 믿으십시오. 예수님께서는 당신에게 자비를 베풀고 싶어 하시며, 주님의 영광을 보여주시고 주님을 위하여 당신의 삶을 바치도록 이끌어주고 싶어 하십니다.
당신을 주님의 현존으로 가득 채워 주십사고 청하기를 두려워 마십시오. 신앙 안에서, 주님께 나아가 주님을 더 많이 알고 주님의 사랑을 더욱 충만히 느끼고 싶다고 말씀드리십시오. 주님께서는 제자들에게 당신 자신을 거듭거듭 드러내 보여주셨음을 기억하십시오. 주님께서는 우리 인간을 위하여 이 세상에 오셨습니다. 그분은 우리가 날마다 발견하고 또 발견해야 할 귀중한 보화입니다.
“예수님, 제가 당신의 현존과 능력으로
변화되도록 도와주십시오.
그리하여 제 모든 삶에서 주님을 따르고
주님과 이웃을 섬기게 해 주십시오.”
