What went wrong? Why did God allow the Israelites to suffer defeat at the hands of the Philistines? The Bible tells us that part of the reason was because they had forsaken the Lord and tried to use the ark of the covenant as a magic weapon, taking it into a battle that God had not directed them to engage.
It's always a good idea to learn from our mistakes and lost battles, especially in the spiritual realm. Were we in touch with the Lord through prayer and Scripture? Did we submit our thoughts and decisions to the commands of Christ? Did we put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:11), or were we over confident in our own power and our own ideas?
Sometimes we let Satan convince us that we are too weak and cannot withstand his strength and cleverness. But we can still claim Christ as our strength in weakness. Sometimes Satan tells us that we are proud and therefore deserve to lose. But we can still claim Christ as our humility and our only reason to boast. Satan may tell us that we are defeated. But we can answer that Christ is our victory. No matter what the enemy says, our response must always be Jesus. He is trustworthy. His word is dependable. He that is in us is far greater than he that is in the world.
Of course, if we find that we are losing battles because of sin, the answer is always to repent. But if we feel that we are innocent, our best response is to call out to the Lord for his help. As men and women of faith, we must be confident that even if we don't see victory right away, Jesus is still with us with his hand of comfort upon us. He will never abandon us. He will always pour out consolation and grace if we but ask. And this means that in Christ there are no losers at all just seasoned soldiers who are learning a new way to fight the battle of faith.
O Lord, we cry out to you for help in our battles.
Forgive us Lord,
for the times we do not turn to you
and walk by faith.
Strengthen us, Jesus,
with your Holy Spirit.
May we all become more than conquerors in you!

뭐가 잘못된 걸까요? 하느님께서는 왜 이스라엘 백성이 필리스티아 사람들에게 패배의 곤욕을 치르게 하셨을까요? 그들이 하느님을 버리고 하느님께서 지시하지 않으신 진영으로 하느님의 계약 궤를 가지고 가 그것을 주술적인 무기로 사용하려고 했기 때문이라고 성경은 그 이유를 설명하고 있습니다.
우리가 과오나 실패를 통해 교훈을 얻는 것은 언제고 바람직한 일입니다. 영적 분야에서는 특히 그렇지요. 우리는 기도와 성경 안에서 주님과 만나고 있습니까? 우리는 그리스도의 계명에 따라 생각하고 결정합니까? 우리는 하느님의 무기로 완전히 무장(에페 6,11)하고 있습니까? 아니면 우리 자신의 힘과 생각을 과신하고 있습니까?
우리는 때때로 우리가 약하기 때문에 악의 힘과 계략을 이겨낼 수 없다고 설득하는 사탄을 그냥 내버려 둡니다. 그러나 우리는 우리가 약할 때 그리스도께서 우리의 힘이심을 주장할 수 있습니다. 때때로 사탄은 우리가 교만하기 때문에 패배해 마땅하다고 말합니다. 그러나 이번에도 그리스도야말로 우리가 겸손하며 동시에 당당할 수 있는 유일한 이유라고 주장할 수 있습니다. 우리가 패배했다고 사탄이 우리에게 속삭이겠지요. 그러나 우리는 그리스도께서 우리의 승리시라고 대답할 수 있습니다. 사탄이 무어라고 하든 우리의 응답은 언제나 그리스도이어야 합니다. 그리스도는 믿을 만한 분이십니다. 그분의 말씀은 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 우리 안에 계시는 주님께서는 세상이 알고 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 위대한 분이십니다.
물론, 우리가 죄 때문에 악과의 전쟁에서 졌다고 생각한다면 참회로 응답해야 할 것입니다. 그러나 자신이 무죄하다고 생각한다면 가장 좋은 응답은 주님의 도움을 청하는 것입니다. 신앙인인 우리는 당장 승리를 볼 수 없다 하더라도 예수님께서는 여전히 격려의 손으로 우리와 함께 계심을 믿습니다. 주님께서는 우리를 결코 버리지 않으십니다. 우리가 청하기만 한다면 위로와 은총을 항상 넘치도록 쏟아 주십니다. 그것은 그리스도 안에서는 패배자란 존재하지 않으며 신앙의 투쟁에서 새로운 전투 방법을 익히는 단련된 병사들만이 있다는 뜻입니다.
“오 주님, 저희는 현세의 싸움터에서
당신의 도우심을 간청합니다.
저희가 당신께 의지하지 않고 신앙으로 걷지 않은
모든 순간을 용서해 주십시오.
주님의 성령으로 저희를 굳세게 하시어,
저희 모두가 주님 안에서
승리자 이상의 사람이 되게 하여 주십시오.”
