Imagine having to walk through the bad part of town on an errand. You pass a storefront with signs in the windows advertising entertainment of a questionable kind. On the sidewalk outside is a man dressed in flashy clothes trying to get people to come in for a private dance from one of his girls. Most likely, you would quicken your pace and avert your eyes, trying to get away as soon as possible.
What would you think if you saw someone tap this man on the shoulder and say, ‘Follow me’? They've got to be up to no good, you might think. Or Thank heavens I don't have to deal with people like that.
Jesus' invitation to Levi elicited a similar response from the Pharisees. What is he doing with that sort of person? Doesn't he know he is unclean? A sinner? To which Jesus responded, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have come to call not the righteous but sinners (Mark 2:17).
In fact, not much really separates us from that flashy young man on the street. Whether we see it or not, each of us has a dark side that is inclined to sin, and given just a few different circumstances, we might have ended up like him. Just think of the different decisions you make each day that either could lead to sin or that are just plain sinful. How easy it is to be judgmental, self-centered, angry, or self-righteous! How enticing to indulge in self-destructive behavior which if left unchecked could cause great damage to ourselves and our loved ones!
Thank God for Jesus! In the midst of our sin, he came to rescue us. Despite the fallen desires of our hearts and the darkened deeds of our lives, he sees us as beautiful and worth redeeming. Levi was moved to repentance by the mercy Jesus showed him, and his life was changed forever. We too can acknowledge the spiritual obstacles in our lives and ask Jesus to restore us and give us his peace. Let's pray today for everyone who is in circumstances of sin and waiting for Jesus to call out to them.

Jesus, I repent of my sins and ask you
for the grace to sin no more.
O amazing grace,
you have saved me and brought me home!

어느 날, 심부름 가는 길에 홍등가를 지나게 되었다고 상상해 보십시오. 당신은 유리창에 선정적인 광고물이 붙어있는 가게 앞을 지나갑니다. 거리에서는 번쩍이는 옷차림을 한 남자가, 들어와서 여자들과 놀다 가라며 사람들을 붙잡습니다. 아마도 당신은 당황하여 눈길을 돌리고 걸음을 재촉하며 빨리 그 곳을 빠져나오려 하겠지요.
그때 어떤 사람이 그 남자의 어깨를 툭 치며 ‘나를 따라 오너라’ 하고 말하는 것을 본다면 당신은 무슨 생각을 할까요? ‘저 사람들 큰일 나겠군’ 하고 생각하거나, ‘나는 저런 사람들과 상종하지 않아도 되니 천만다행이야’ 라고 생각하겠지요.
레위를 부르신 예수님의 초대는 바리사이파 사람들에게 그와 비슷한 반응을 일으켰습니다. 예수가 저런 자와 상종을 하다니 어찌된 노릇인가? 저 자가 부정한 자라는 것을 알고 있기나 하는가? 죄인이라는 것을 모르는가? 이런 의문들에 예수님께서는 대답하셨습니다. “건강한 이들에게는 의사가 필요하지 않으나 병든 이들에게는 필요하다. 나는 의인이 아니라 죄인을 부르러 왔다.”(마르 2,17)
사실, 우리는 거리의 그 번쩍이는 옷차림의 남자와 별로 다를 바 없는 사람들입니다. 이를 인정하든 인정하지 않든, 우리 모두는 죄에 빠지기 쉬운 어두운 면을 지니고 있습니다. 상황이 약간만 달랐어도 우리 역시 그 사람처럼 되었을지 모릅니다. 당신을 죄로 이끌거나, 명백히 죄가 되는 일상적 결정들에 관해 잠시 생각해 보십시오. 비판적이고, 자기중심적이고, 분노하고, 독선적이 되기란 얼마나 쉬운 일입니까! 만약 억제하지 않는다면 자신과 사랑하는 사람들에게 큰 해를 끼칠 수 있는 자기파괴적 행동에 빠지는 것 또한 얼마나 유혹적입니까!
예수님을 보내주신 하느님께 감사하십시오! 예수님께서는 죄 중에 있는 우리를 구원하러 오셨습니다. 주님께서는 우리 마음이 움켜쥐고 있는 허무한 욕망들과 우리 삶의 어두운 행동들에도 아랑곳없이 우리가 아름답고 구원받을 가치가 있다고 보십니다. 레위는 주님께서 보여주신 자비에 감동되어 참회를 하였고 그의 삶은 완전히 변했습니다. 우리도 우리 삶 안에 있는 영적 장애물들을 인정하고, 예수님께 우리를 회복시켜 주시고 주님의 평화를 주십사고 청할 수 있습니다. 지금 이 순간, 죄에 빠져서 예수님의 도움을 기다리고 있는 모든 사람을 위하여 기도합시다.

“예수님, 저는 저의 죄를 뉘우치며
다시는 죄를 짓지 않을 은총을 간청합니다.
오, 놀라우신 은총이여,
주님께서는 저를 구원하시고
저를 집으로 데려다 주셨습니다!”
