After being woken up three different times in one night, Eli finally realized what was going on. Sensing it was the Lord who was calling Samuel, Eli told that if he heard the voice again, he should respond by saying, Speak, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:9). A short time later, when the Lord called again, Samuel followed Eli's instructions, and his life was forever changed.
These six words ‘Speak, for your servant is listening’ reflect the way Samuel's heart was open to God. For the rest of his life, God was with Samuel powerfully, using him to defeat enemies, unite the people, anoint kings, and when necessary give Israel a lesson in humility.
This story of Samuel's calling brings up two important questions: ‘Do you believe that God can speak to you?’ and ‘Are you willing to receive whatever God says to you?’
The world may scoff at the idea that God can speak to us, but this truth is at the heart of his intention for all his children. We tend to put our faith in what we can see and grasp with our minds. While logic and reason are essential, we shouldn't let them overshadow the possibility of God speaking as well. Don't be afraid to ask God to speak to you. When you pray; when you receive the Eucharist, or when you read Scripture, do it with an open, expectant heart. He just may surprise you!
The next question, then, is whether we are open to receiving whatever God says to us. If Samuel had placed conditions or limitations on his prayer of surrender, he would have limited his connection to God and his effectiveness in Israel. But Samuel didn't say, Speak, and I'll think about it. He didn't say, Speak, but I'm pretty busy. And because there were no conditions, he was able to hear God clearly and follow him humbly.
Brothers and sisters, God has a loving plan for our lives, and he wants to reveal that plan to each of us. So come before the Lord with a humble heart and ask him to speak. He really can do this!

Here I am, Lord,
ready to hear your voice.

엘리는 사무엘 때문에 자다 깨기를 하룻밤 동안 세 번이나 한 후에야 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 깨달았습니다. 사무엘을 부르고 계신 분이 주님이시라는 것을 알아챈 엘리는 사무엘에게 그 목소리가 다시 들려오면 “주님, 말씀하십시오. 당신 종이 듣고 있습니다.” 하고 말씀드리라고 일렀습니다(1사무 3,9). 조금 뒤, 주님께서 다시 부르시자, 사무엘은 엘리가 일러준 대로 하였고 그 후로 사무엘의 삶은 영원히 변하였습니다.
“당신 종이 듣고 있습니다.”라는 이 한 마디는 사무엘의 마음이 하느님께 열려 있음을 말해 줍니다. 하느님께서는 그때부터 사무엘의 삶 안에 능력으로 현존하시며 그를 도구로 삼아 원수들을 멸망시키고, 백성을 결속시키며, 왕들에게 기름을 바르시고, 필요할 때는 이스라엘에게 겸손함의 교훈을 주셨습니다.
사무엘을 부르신 이 이야기는 다음의 두 가지 중요한 질문을 떠올려 줍니다. ‘당신은 하느님께서 당신에게 말씀하실 수 있다는 것을 믿습니까?’ ‘하느님께서 당신에게 말씀하시는 것은 무엇이나 기꺼이 받아들이겠습니까?’
세상은 하느님께서 우리에게 말씀하실 수 있다는 생각을 비웃을 수도 있겠지요. 하지만 이 진실은 하느님께서 당신의 모든 자녀들에게 뜻하시는 바의 핵심입니다. 우리에게는 우리의 이성으로 이해하고 파악할 수 있는 것만 믿으려는 경향이 있습니다. 물론 이론과 이성도 중요합니다. 그러나 그것 때문에 하느님께서 우리에게 말씀하실 수 있다는 가능성을 외면하면 안 됩니다. 하느님께 말씀해 주십사고 청하는 것을 어려워 마십시오. 기도할 때, 성체를 영할 때, 성경을 읽을 때 열린 마음과 기대하는 마음으로 하십시오. 하느님께서는 당신에게 놀라움을 안겨주실 수도 있으니까요!
다음 질문은 하느님께서 우리에게 말씀하시는 것은 무엇이나 받아들일 수 있는 열린 마음을 가지고 있는가 하는 것입니다. 사무엘이 하느님께 복종하는 기도를 하면서 조건이나 한계를 두었다면, 하느님께서도 그와의 관계와 이스라엘에서의 그의 지배력에 제한을 두었을 것입니다. 그러나 사무엘은 ‘주님, 말씀하십시오, 생각해보겠습니다.’ 또는 ‘말씀하십시오, 하지만 제가 좀 바쁩니다마는….’이라고 하지 않았습니다. 조건을 붙이지 않았으므로, 사무엘은 하느님의 목소리를 명확히 들을 수 있었고 그 말씀을 겸손하게 따를 수 있었습니다.
형제자매 여러분, 하느님께서는 우리 인생에 대해서 애정 어린 계획을 가지고 계시며, 이 계획을 우리 각자에게 드러내보이고자 하십니다. 그러니 겸손한 마음으로 주님 앞에 나아와 말씀해 주십사고 청하십시오. 하느님께서는 정말로 그렇게 하실 수 있습니다!

“주님, 당신의 말씀을 들으려고
제가 여기에 있습니다.”
