Throughout the gospels, we read about Jesus healing the sick, strengthening the weak, and comforting the hurting. But how did it start? In many of the accounts, it was the people themselves who sought out Jesus, or at least someone else who sought him out on their behalf. Word about Jesus' power and miracles was all they needed to seek.
In today's gospel, Jesus talks about filling old wineskins with new wine. That new wine is the Spirit, which he loves to pour out for our healing, our empowerment, and our restoration. But Jesus will not force himself. He wants us to turn to him, to ask him to come in. And that is the new wineskin. He is waiting for each of us to put aside all that is old and separated from him so that we can embrace the new.
And there's the rub. To experience Jesus, we have to change. We may have to set aside some time for him. We may have to give up habits or tendencies that distract us from him. And we're not always sure we can take up the challenge.
The good news is that not only will Jesus help us along the way, he will take our small efforts at change and multiply them a hundred times over. Sometimes, he will even change us without our realizing it, drawing out the person he created us to be just as a jeweler takes the precious diamond out of the rough to be a shining and pure gem.
Jesus wants to help us, but he is looking for us to turn to him. He is looking for a little effort on our parts so that when we receive his new wine, the old wineskin will not crack. A commitment to spend just fifteen minutes a day in prayer may be the perfect place to start. We may be giving up some time, but God will bless us, heal us, and raise us up because of it.
Today, let's ask Jesus what we can do to move closer to him. Then, let's take that tiny step of faith and ask him to work.

Lord, the gift of your Spirit amazes me.
Move in me today to heal my hurts
and raise up my thoughts to your throne.
I praise the working of your hand in my life
for what you have done and what you will do.

복음서 곳곳에서 우리는 예수님께서 병든 이들을 고치시고 약한 이들에게 힘을 주시고 상처 받은 이들을 달래주신 것을 읽습니다. 그런데 이런 일들은 어떻게 시작되었습니까? 많은 경우에 사람들이 예수님을 직접 찾아오거나 적어도 다른 사람을 대신하여 찾아와서 시작되었습니다. 예수님을 찾는 데는 그분의 능력과 기적들에 관한 소문이면 족했습니다.
오늘 복음에서 예수님께서는 낡은 부대에 새 포도주를 담는 이야기를 하십니다. 그 새 포도주는 예수님께서 우리를 치료하고 힘을 주고 회복하게 하시고자 부어 주시는 성령이십니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 강요하지 않으십니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 당신께 의지하며 들어오시라고 초대하기를 바라십니다. 그것이 바로 새 부대입니다. 예수님께서는, 우리가 새로운 것을 받아들일 수 있도록 주님에게서 벗어난 낡은 모든 것들을 없애버리기를 기다리고 계십니다.
바로 여기에 어려움이 있습니다. 예수님을 알게 되려면 우리가 변해야 합니다. 주님을 위해서 시간을 내야 할 때도 있고, 주님에게서 우리를 멀어지게 하는 습관이나 버릇들을 버려야 할 수도 있습니다. 게다가 이런 도전에 응할 수 있으리라고 꼭 장담하지도 못합니다.
다행히도 예수님께서는 우리의 여정에 동행이 되어 도와주시기만 하는 것이 아니라, 변하려고 애쓰는 우리의 작은 노력을 백 배로 갚아 주십니다. 가끔 예수님께서는 원석에서 값진 금강석을 채취하여 찬란하고 순수한 보석을 만드는 보석공처럼 우리 안에서 창조하신 원래의 모습을 이끌어내심으로써 모르는 사이에 우리를 변화시켜 주십니다.
예수님께서는 우리를 도와주고 싶어 하시지만, 우리가 먼저 주님께 도움을 청하기를 기다리십니다. 우리가 주님의 새 포도주를 받게 될 때 낡은 부대가 터져버리지 않도록, 우리의 작은 노력을 기다리십니다. 하루에 십오 분 만이라도 기도하기로 결심하는 것이 시작하기에 가장 좋은 출발점인지도 모릅니다. 우리는 짧은 시간을 바쳤을지라도 하느님께서는 그 대가로 우리를 크게 축복하시고, 치유하시고, 거두어 주실 것입니다.
오늘, 예수님께 더 가까이 가려면 무엇을 해야 하는지 여쭈어 봅시다. 믿음의 작은 발걸음을 내딛으며 축복을 청합시다.

“주님, 당신 성령의 선물이
저를 놀라게 합니다.
오늘 제 안에 오시어
제 상처를 아물게 하시고
제 생각을 주님께로 이끌어 주십시오.
저의 삶 안에서 주님의 손으로 하신 일과
앞으로 하실 일을 찬미합니다.”
