Poor Samuel. As a prophet and divinely appointed king-maker, he had to keep adjusting his ideas of what was best for Israel. When the people demanded a king like all the nations (1 Samuel 8:5), Samuel told them what a bad idea that was. Why did they need a king when they had God? Finally, the prophet came around to agreeing with God that the people were so stubborn he should do what they demanded.
Next, God directed him to anoint Saul king. The new king depended heavily on Samuel, and all went well for a time. But before very long, Saul got tired of following Samuel''s directives. He took matters into his own hands and displeased God so much that the Lord told Samuel, I regret that I made Saul king (1 Samuel 15:11). This made Samuel angry and depressed.
God spoke strongly to his prophet. How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out (1 Samuel 16:1). Step by step, God led Samuel to anoint David to succeed Saul.
Like Samuel, we often get stuck when God has moved on. Sometimes we linger in a good place, where we recall God''s blessing. We want things to stay the same forever. Sometimes we are trapped by unfulfilled dreams: marriage, parenthood, career, success. Sometimes we are disappointed when a fine thing turns sour. We try to figure out what we did wrong and are weighed down with guilt. But we are so busy looking back that we miss God''s invitation to move on with him.
God did not reveal the whole picture to Samuel at once. He simply directed him to go to Bethlehem with his flask of oil, and I will show you what you shall do (1 Samuel 16:3). We all know how this journey turned out, providing Israel with David, her greatest king. Although David had years of battle before his actual coronation, his anointing ended Samuel''s mission to the kings of Israel.

가엾은 사무엘, 예언자이며 하느님께 임금을 세우는 사람으로 거룩하게 부름받은 사무엘은 이스라엘을 위하여 무엇이 최선인지 항상 생각해야 했습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 다른 민족들처럼 임금을 세워 달라고 하였을 때(1사무 8,5) 사무엘은 그들의 생각이 얼마나 어리석은지 말해 주었습니다. 하느님을 모시고 사는 그들에게 왜 임금이 필요했겠습니까? 예언자는 결국, 백성들이 너무 완고하니 그들의 요구대로 해 주라는 하느님의 뜻에 따르기로 합니다.
그 다음에, 하느님께서는 사울에게 기름을 부어 임금으로 세우라고 사무엘에게 지시하셨습니다. 새 임금은 사무엘에게 매우 의존하였고, 한동안은 모든 일이 순조롭게 진행되었지요. 그러나 얼마 가지 않아 사울은 사무엘의 지시를 따르는 일에 싫증이 났고, 무엇이나 자기 뜻대로 하려고 함으로써 하느님의 마음을 심히 언짢게 해 드렸습니다. 하느님께서는 사무엘에게 ‘사울을 임금으로 삼은 것을 후회한다(1사무 15,11)’라고 하셨습니다. 이 말씀을 듣고 사무엘은 화가 나고 의기소침하였습니다.
하느님께서는 예언자에게 단호히 말씀하셨습니다. “너는 언제까지 이렇게 슬퍼하고만 있을 셈이냐? … 그러니 기름을 뿔에 채워 가지고 떠나라.”(1사무 16,1) 하느님께서는 한 단계 한 단계씩 사무엘을 이끌어 사울의 뒤를 이을 다윗에게 기름을 붓도록 하셨습니다.
우리는 종종 사무엘처럼, 하느님께서는 앞으로 나아가시는데 그 자리에 붙박혀 있는 경우가 있습니다. 때로 우리는 하느님의 축복을 회상시켜 주는, 마음에 드는 곳을 떠나기를 망설입니다. 우리는 모든 것이 영원히 그대로 있기를 바라지요. 때로는 결혼, 부모 노릇, 출세, 성공 등 다 이루지 못한 꿈들에 발목이 잡혀 있습니다. 좋은 물건이 못쓰게 되어버려 실망할 때도 있습니다. 또 때로는 무슨 일을 잘못했나 생각하며 죄의식에 짓눌립니다. 그러면서도 우리는 너무 바빠서 함께 가자고 손짓하시는 하느님의 초대에 응하지 못한 것을 되돌아볼 여유가 없습니다.
하느님께서는 사무엘에게 전체 계획을 한꺼번에 보여주지 않으셨습니다. 사무엘에게 뿔에 기름을 채워 베들레헴으로 떠나라고 명령하시며 “그 다음에 네가 할 일을 내가 알려 주겠다(1사무 16,3).” 고만 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 사무엘의 여행이 이스라엘의 가장 위대한 임금인 다윗을 당신 백성에게 세워 주시기 위한 것이었음을 압니다. 다윗이 왕위에 오를 때까지 여러 해 동안 전쟁을 치러야 했지만, 그에게 기름을 부음으로써 이스라엘 임금들에 대한 사무엘의 임무는 끝이 났습니다.
돌이킬 수 없는 지난 일로 왜 오늘 슬퍼하고 있습니까? 하느님께서는 희망찬 미래로 함께 나아가자고 어떻게 당신을 초대하고 계십니까?

“주님, 저는 자주 과거에 대한 후회에 얽매여
지금 여기 계시는 당신의 현존을
보지 못합니다.
저를 도우시어 눈을 들고 신뢰와 믿음으로
주님과 함께 나아가게 해 주십시오.”
