How infuriated David must have been! Here were the armies of Israel, being mocked by a Philistine. Sure, the Philistine was a formidable warrior, but why were his brothers along with all of Israel''''s army intimidated to the point of silence? They were God''''s chosen people! Not only that, but the king himself wanted to cover David in ill-fitting armor before he could go to battle. Didn''''t they understand that it was not David''''s strength that would defeat Goliath? Couldn''''t they see that this was a spiritual battle and not a military one?

Our own reaction may be similar to the Israelites when we are confronted by someone who makes light of or even mocks our faith. Maybe other diners smirk when we say grace before a meal at a restaurant. A teammate might say we''''re weak because we won''''t cheat to win a game. On a larger scale, society itself might be little our faith in books or movies, depicting Christians as stupid or corrupt or both. We may feel intimidated and unqualified, as if we don''''t have the right resources to make an answer.

Let''''s take David''''s example. We don''''t need a theology degree or persuasive arguments to stand up for the gospel. We need trust in the Holy Spirit and willingness to take small steps to follow his leading. First, of course, we start with prayer for the situation. But it may take only a kind word or loving example of forgiveness to win over our opponents. Who knows? We may be a small but necessary link in a chain of events that will turn a person''''s contempt into conversion!

When it comes down to it, the source of all scorn for our faith is the devil. On a spiritual level, he is the father of all forms of hatred. But also on that spiritual level, our reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit outweighs any qualifications or preparation we may or may not have. Like David, we don''''t need to fear even a formidable opponent, because we fight in the name of the Lord.

Lord, I look to you to equip me
for spiritual battle.
Let me not look to myself for strength,
or get scared when I see my insufficiency.
The battle is yours!

다윗이 얼마나 화가 났겠습니까! 이스라엘 군대 전체가 필리스티아인 하나에게 조롱당했으니 말입니다. 물론, 그 필리스티아인은 무시무시한 전사였습니다. 그러나 어찌하여 그의 형들과 다른 모든 이스라엘 군사들은 소리조차 못 낼 만큼 겁에 질렸다는 말입니까? 그들은 하느님께서 선택하신 사람들이었습니다! 그뿐 아니라 임금조차도 다윗이 전쟁터에 나갈 때 그에게 맞지도 않는 갑옷을 입혀 보내려고 하였습니다. 그들은 골리앗을 물리칠 힘은 다윗의 힘이 아니라는 것을 깨닫지 못했단 말입니까? 그들은 이 전쟁이 무력전이 아니라 영적 전쟁이라는 것을 알 수 없었단 말입니까?
우리의 신앙을 경시하거나 심지어 조롱하는 사람과 마주치면, 우리도 이스라엘 사람들과 비슷한 반응을 보일지 모르지요. 식당에서 식사를 할 때 우리가 식사 전 기도를 바치는 것을 보고 다른 손님들이 우습게 여길 수도 있고, 경기에서 속임수를 안 쓰니까 팀이 약할 수밖에 없다고 동료들이 불평할 수도 있습니다. 넓게는, 사회 자체가 그리스도인들은 어리석거나 부패했거나, 아니면 그 둘 다라고 매도하면서 책이나 영화를 통해 우리의 신앙을 비하시킬 수 있습니다. 그런 상황 앞에서 우리는 마치 대응할 수 있는 정당한 근거가 없는 사람들처럼 겁을 먹거나 역부족이라고 느낄지 모릅니다.
다윗을 예로 들어 봅시다. 복음을 옹호하기 위해 신학 학위나 설득력 있는 이론이 필요한 것은 아닙니다. 우리에게 필요한 것은 성령께 신뢰하며 성령의 인도에 따라 기꺼이 작은 발걸음을 옮기려는 마음가짐입니다. 물론 처음에는 우리가 처한 상황에 대하여 기도드리는 것으로 시작합니다. 그러다가 우리를 반대하는 사람들을 설득할 다정한 말 한 마디나 용서하는 사랑의 모범을 보이게 될 수 있습니다. 누가 압니까? 우리가 일련의 사건들 안에서 작지만 필수불가결한 연결 고리가 되어 신앙을 경멸하던 사람을 회심으로 인도하게 될지!
근본적으로, 신앙을 경멸하게 하는 근원은 악마입니다. 영적 차원에서, 악마는 모든 형태의 증오를 낳는 자입니다. 그러나 또한 바로 그 영적 차원에서, 우리가 가지거나 혹은 가지지 못한 그 어떤 자격이나 각오보다 더 중요한 것은 성령의 힘에 의지하는 것입니다. 우리도 다윗처럼, 아무리 힘센 적이라도 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 우리는 주님의 이름으로 싸우기 때문입니다.

“주님, 영적 싸움에 임하도록
저를 무장시켜 주시고,
제가 자신의 힘에 기대거나 저의 부족함을 보고
겁내지 않게 해 주십시오.
싸움은 주님의 몫입니다!”
