Of Saul, the son of Kish, Scripture says, There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he (1 Samuel 9:2). At God''s command, Samuel had anointed Saul king over Israel. In the early days of Saul''s reign, he mustered the Israelites and defeated the Ammonites. He ruled justly and led his people according to God''s law. When Israel was besieged by the Philistines, Saul was grateful to young David for defeating Goliath, the Philistine giant. Saul loved David greatly (1 Samuel 16:21) and set him over the men of war (18:5).
But despite such heroic acts, Saul was also an unstable and insecure man. As king, he disobeyed God during Israel''s battle against the Amalekites. As role model, he consulted a medium to commune with the dead. And even as a man he became jealous of David and sought to kill him on numerous occasions.
Like Saul, we too have our ups and downs. Although we truly love the Lord and want to obey him wholeheartedly, we occasionally fall prey to temptation and sin. If we''re not careful, jealousy, fears, and worries about the future can dominate us and lead us to erratic behavior. And like Saul, we can fall into the trap of thinking that we can handle life''s challenges on our own, or that we can change our own hearts. Saul didn''t cry out to the Lord or to his servant Samuel for help and deliverance. Ultimately, he became so isolated that he could see no way out of his dilemmas. As far as he was concerned, there was no hope left.
Brothers and sisters, God is eager to help us when we turn to him. Our weaknesses, temptations, and failings can all fall away as we allow him work in our lives. If you''ve been injured by someone, as David was treated unjustly by Saul, let go of any desire for vengeance. If you''re struggling against anger or trying to overcome an addiction, call upon the Lord and seek competent help. Take advantage of the grace of confession and yield to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Never give up!

Lord Jesus, I surrender to you.
Forgive my sins and fill me with your Spirit.
Help me to be merciful and forgiving
toward those who have offended me,
just as you have shown mercy toward me.

키스의 아들, 사울에 관하여 성경은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. ‘이스라엘 자손들 가운데 그보다 더 잘 생긴 사람은 없었다(1사무 9,2).’ ‘하느님이 시키신 대로 사무엘은 사울에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 영도자로 세웠다. 사울은 임금이 되자 이스라엘 사람들을 모아 암몬족을 물리쳤다. 사울은 공정하게 다스렸고 하느님의 율법에 따라 백성들을 이끌었다. 이스라엘이 필리스티아 사람들에게 패배했을 때 사울은 필리스티아의 거인 골리앗을 이긴 것에 대하여 다윗에게 감사하였다. 사울은 다윗을 몹시 사랑하였고(1사무 16,21) 그에게 군인들을 통솔하는 직책을 맡겼다(18,5).’
그러나 그와 같은 영웅적 행적에도 불구하고 사울은 늘 불안하고 자신감이 없는 사람이었습니다. 사울은 이스라엘 백성이 아말렉족과 싸울 때 임금으로서 하느님의 말씀을 거역하였지요. 또한 역할 모델로서 죽은 자들과 교감하기 위해 영매의 자문을 구했는가 하면, 심지어 인간적으로 다윗을 시샘하여 여러 차례 그를 죽이려고 시도하였습니다.
사울과 마찬가지로 우리의 인생에도 기복이 있습니다. 비록 우리가 하느님을 진정으로 사랑하고 온 마음으로 그분께 순종하기를 원한다 해도, 우리는 가끔 유혹과 죄의 포로가 되고 맙니다. 우리가 깨어 있지 않으면, 질투, 두려움, 미래에 대한 걱정이 우리를 지배하여 그릇된 행동을 하게 만듭니다. 우리도 사울처럼 인생의 도전들을 혼자 힘으로 해결할 수 있다거나, 자신의 마음을 혼자 힘으로 바꿀 수 있다는 망상에 빠져들 수 있습니다. 사울은 하느님께도, 하느님의 종 사무엘에게도 도움과 구원을 청한 적이 없습니다. 결국 그는 궁지에서 헤어날 길을 찾을 수 없을 정도로 외톨이가 되고 말았지요. 그에게 남은 희망이란 아무것도 없었습니다.
형제자매 여러분, 하느님께서는 우리가 당신께 의지할 때 기꺼이 도와주십니다. 주님께서 우리 삶 안에서 일하시도록 해 드릴 때 우리의 약함, 유혹, 결점들이 모두 사라질 것입니다. 만일 다윗이 사울에게 부당한 대우를 받은 것처럼 당신이 누군가에게 상처를 입었다면, 복수할 생각은 버리십시오. 당신이 분노와 투쟁하고 있거나 어떤 중독에서 벗어나려고 애쓰고 있다면 주님께 간청하고 전문적인 도움을 받도록 하십시오. 고해성사의 은혜와 우리를 변화시켜주시는 성령의 힘에 의지하십시오. 절대로 포기하지 마십시오!

“주 예수님, 저를 주님께 맡깁니다.
저의 죄를 용서하시고
저를 주님의 성령으로 채워 주십시오.
주님께서 저에게 자비를 보이신 것처럼
저를 거스른 사람들에게
제가 자비와 용서를 베풀 수 있도록 도와 주십시오.”
