헨리 나웬 신부님(1932.1.24-1996.9.21)의 오! 그리고 늘! 11월 9일(라테라노 대성전 봉헌 축일)  <짧은 생애를 보내신 성인들> The Saints Who Live Short Lives 전쟁이나 굶주림, 후천성면역결핍증후군이나 거리의 폭력 그리고 신체로나 정서로나 버림받아 젊은 나이에 이승을 떠난 이들을 보면 그이들의 짧은 생애에 무슨 가치가 있나싶은 생각이 종종 들게됩니다. 이이들은 삶의 여정이 멈춰버려 어떤 목표에 도달하고 꿈을 실현하거나 임무를 성취할수 없었던 처럼 보이는 겁니다. 하지만 이이들의 생애가 짧았을지 모르지만 동서고금의 어마어마한 모든 성인의 통공에 속하는 겁니다. 이이들은 희고 긴 겉옷을 입고 어린 양의 어좌에 둘러서서 십자가에 못박히신 그리스도의 승리를 선포하고 있는 겁니다.(묵시 7, 9 참조). 예수님의 목숨을 빼앗으려는 헤롯왕에게 목숨을잃은 순진무구한 아기들의 이야기(마태 2,13-18 참조)는 오랜 세윌을 열심히 산 이들만 성인이 되는 건 아님을 일깨워 줍니다. 이 아기들은 물론 어린 나이에 이승을 떠난 많은 이들도 영웅적인 행적을 남긴 이들 못지 않게 예수님의 어엿한 증인인 겁니다. "그러나 거센 바람을 보고서는 그만 두려워졌다. 그래서 물에 빠져 들기 시작하자, "주님, 저를 구해 주십시오." 하고 소리를 질렀다. 예수님께서 곧 손을 내밀어 그를 붙잡으시고, “이 믿음이 약한 자야, 왜 의심하였느냐?” 하고 말씀하셨다."(마태14,30-31) The Saints Who Live Short Lives NOVEMBER 9 As we see so many people die at a young age, through wars, starvation, AIDS, street violence, and physical and emotional neglect, we often wonder what the value of their short lives is. It seems that their journeys have been cut off before they could reach any of their goals, realise any of their dreams, or accomplish any of their tasks. But, short as their lives may have been, they belong to that immense communion of saints, from all times and all places, who stand around the throne of the Lamb dressed in white robes proclaiming the victory of the crucified Christ (see Revelation 7:9). The story of the innocent children murdered by King Herod in his attempt to destroy Jesus (see Matthew 2:13-18), reminds us that saintliness is not just for those who lived long and hardworking lives. These children, and many who died young, are as much witnesses to Jesus as those who accomplished heroic deeds. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
