가령 여러분의 모임에 금가락지를 끼고 화려한 옷을 입은 사람이 들어오고, 또 누추한 옷을 입은 가난한 사람이 들어온다고 합시다.

여러분이 화려한 옷을 걸친 사람을 쳐다보고서는 “선생님은 여기 좋은 자리에 앉으십시오.” 하고, 가난한 사람에게는 “당신은 저기 서 있으시오.” 하거나 “내 발판 밑에 앉으시오.” 한다면,

▶ and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say, "Sit here, please," while you say to the poor one, "Stand there," or "Sit at my feet,"

여러분은 서로 차별하는 것이 아니겠습니까? 또 악한 생각을 가진 심판자가 된 것이 아니겠습니까?

나의 사랑하는 형제 여러분, 들으십시오. 하느님께서는 세상의 가난한 사람들을 골라 믿음의 부자가 되게 하시고, 당신을 사랑하는 이들에게 약속하신 나라의 상속자가 되게 하지 않으셨습니까?

▶ Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?

그런데 여러분은 가난한 사람을 업신여겼습니다. 여러분을 억누르는 사람들이 바로 부자가 아닙니까? 여러분을 법정으로 끌고 가는 자들도 그들이 아닙니까?

▶ But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

▶ For whoever keeps the whole law, but falls short in one particular, has become guilty in respect to all of it.

“간음해서는 안 된다.”고 이르신 분께서 또 “살인해서는 안 된다.”고 하셨습니다. 그대가 비록 간음하지 않더라도 살인하면 율법을 어긴 범법자가 되는 것입니다.

▶ For he who said, "You shall not commit adultery," also said, "You shall not kill." Even if you do not commit adultery but kill, you have become a transgressor of the law.

여러분은 장차 자유의 법에 따라 심판받을 사람으로서 말하고 행동하십시오.

▶ So speak and so act as people who will be judged by the law of freedom.

자비를 베풀지 않은 자는 가차 없는 심판을 받습니다. 자비는 심판을 이깁니다.

나의 형제 여러분, 누가 믿음이 있다고 말하면서 실천이 없으면 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까? 그러한 믿음이 그 사람을 구원할 수 있겠습니까?

▶ What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?

어떤 형제나 자매가 헐벗고 그날 먹을 양식조차 없는데,

▶ If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day,
|

|
여러분 가운데 누가 그들의 몸에 필요한 것은 주지 않으면서, “평안히 가서 몸을 따뜻이 녹이고 배불리 먹으시오.” 하고 말한다면, 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?

▶ and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?

이와 마찬가지로 믿음에 실천이 없으면 그러한 믿음은 죽은 것입니다.

▶ So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
|

그러나 어떤 사람은 이렇게 말할 것입니다. “그대에게는 믿음이 있고 나에게는 실천이 있소.” 나에게 실천 없는 그대의 믿음을 보여 주십시오. 나는 실천으로 나의 믿음을 보여 주겠습니다.

▶ You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works.
