내가 말하려는 것은 이렇습니다. 상속자는 모든 것의 주인이면서도 어린아이일 때에는 종과 다를 것이 없습니다.

이처럼 우리도 어린아이였을 때에는 이 세상의 정령들 아래에서 종살이를 하였습니다.

그러나 때가 차자 하느님께서 당신의 아드님을 보내시어 여인에게서 태어나 율법 아래 놓이게 하셨습니다.

▶ But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

율법 아래 있는 이들을 속량하시어 우리가 하느님의 자녀 되는 자격을 얻게 하시려는 것이었습니다.

▶ to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption.

진정 여러분이 자녀이기 때문에 하느님께서 당신 아드님의 영을 우리 마음 안에 보내 주셨습니다. 그 영께서 “아빠! 아버지!” 하고 외치고 계십니다.

▶ As proof that you are children, God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"

그러므로 그대는 더 이상 종이 아니라 자녀입니다. 그리고 자녀라면 하느님께서 세워 주신 상속자이기도 합니다.

전에 여러분이 하느님을 알지 못할 때에는 본디 신이 아닌 것들에게 종살이를 하였습니다.

▶ At a time when you did not know God, you became slaves to things that by nature are not gods;
|
|

|
그러나 지금은 하느님을 알게 되었습니다. 아니, 하느님께서 여러분을 알아주셨습니다. 그런데 여러분은 어떻게 그 약하고 초라한 정령들에게 돌아갈 수가 있습니까? 그것들에게 다시 종살이를 하고 싶다는 말입니까?

▶ but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and destitute elemental powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?

▶ and you did not show disdain or contempt because of the trial caused you by my physical condition, but rather you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.

그런데 행복을 느끼던 여러분의 그 마음은 어디로 갔습니까? 내가 장담하건대, 여러분은 할 수만 있다면 눈이라도 뽑아 나에게 주었을 것입니다.

▶ Where now is that blessedness of yours? Indeed, I can testify to you that, if it had been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.

그런데 이제 내가 여러분에게 진리를 말한다고 해서 여러분의 원수가 되었다는 말입니까?

▶ So now have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?

그들은 여러분에게 열성을 기울이고 있지만 좋은 뜻으로 하는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 여러분을 따로 떼어 놓아 여러분이 자기들에게만 열성을 기울이게 하려는 것입니다.

▶ They show interest in you, but not in a good way; they want to isolate you, so that you may show interest in them.

남들이 좋은 뜻으로 열성을 기울여 주는 것은 언제나 좋은 일입니다. 내가 여러분과 함께 있을 때에만 그런 것이 아닙니다.

▶ Now it is good to be shown interest for good reason at all times, and not only when I am with you.

▶ For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the freeborn woman.

그런데 여종에게서 난 아들은 육에 따라 태어났고, 자유의 몸인 부인에게서 난 아들은 약속의 결과로 태어났습니다.

▶ The son of the slave woman was born naturally, the son of the freeborn through a promise.

여기에는 우의적인 뜻이 있습니다. 이 여자들은 두 계약을 가리킵니다. 하나는 시나이 산에서 나온 여자로 종살이할 자식을 낳는데, 바로 하가르입니다.

▶ Now this is an allegory. These women represent two covenants. One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar.

하가르는 아라비아에 있는 시나이 산을 가리키는데, 지금의 예루살렘에 해당합니다. 지금의 예루살렘이 그 자녀들과 함께 종살이를 하고 있기 때문입니다.

▶ Hagar represents Sinai, a mountain in Arabia; it corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery along with her children.

▶ But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother.

성경에 이렇게 기록되어 있습니다. “즐거워하여라, 아이를 낳지 못하는 여인아! 기뻐 소리쳐라, 환성을 올려라, 산고를 겪어 보지 못한 여인아! 버림받은 여인의 자녀가 남편 가진 여인의 자녀보다 더 많기 때문이다.”

▶ But what does the scripture say? "Drive out the slave woman and her son! For the son of the slave woman shall not share the inheritance with the son" of the freeborn.
