그리고 주 너희 하느님께서 그들을 너희에게 넘겨주셔서 너희가 그들을 쳐부수게 될 때, 너희는 그들을 반드시 전멸시켜야 한다. 너희는 그들과 계약을 맺어서도, 그들을 불쌍히 여겨서도 안 된다.

▶ and when the LORD, your God, delivers them up to you and you defeat them, you shall doom them. Make no covenant with them and show them no mercy.

너희는 또한 그들과 혼인을 해서는 안 된다. 너희 딸을 그들의 아들에게 주지도 말고, 너희 아들에게 주려고 그들의 딸을 맞아들여서도 안 된다.

▶ You shall not intermarry with them, neither giving your daughters to their sons nor taking their daughters for your sons.

그런 짓은 너희의 아들이 나를 따르지 않고 돌아서서 다른 신들을 섬기게 만들 것이다. 그러면 주님의 진노가 너희를 거슬러 타올라 주님께서 너희를 곧바로 멸망시키실 것이다.

▶ For they would turn your sons from following me to serving other gods, and then the wrath of the LORD would flare up against you and quickly destroy you.

오히려 너희는 그들에게 이렇게 해야 한다. 그들의 제단들을 허물어뜨리고 그들의 기념 기둥들을 부수며, 그들의 아세라 목상들을 찍어 버리고 그들의 우상들을 불에 태워 버려야 한다.

▶ "But this is how you must deal with them: Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, chop down their sacred poles, and destroy their idols by fire.

이는 너희가 주 너희 하느님의 거룩한 백성이며, 주 너희 하느님께서 너희를 선택하시어 땅 위에 있는 모든 민족들 가운데에서 너희를 당신 소유의 백성으로 삼으셨기 때문이다.

주님께서 너희에게 마음을 주시고 너희를 선택하신 것은, 너희가 어느 민족보다 수가 많아서가 아니다. 사실 너희는 모든 민족들 가운데에서 수가 가장 적다.

▶ It was not because you are the largest of all nations that the LORD set his heart on you and chose you, for you are really the smallest of all nations.

그런데도 주님께서는 너희를 사랑하시어, 너희 조상들에게 하신 맹세를 지키시려고, 강한 손으로 너희를 이끌어 내셔서, 종살이하던 집, 이집트 임금 파라오의 손에서 너희를 구해 내셨다.

▶ It was because the LORD loved you and because of his fidelity to the oath he had sworn to your fathers, that he brought you out with his strong hand from the place of slavery, and ransomed you from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

그러므로 너희는 주 너희 하느님께서 참하느님이시며, 당신을 사랑하고 당신의 계명을 지키는 이들에게는, 천대에 이르기까지 계약과 자애를 지키시는 진실하신 하느님이심을 알아야 한다.

▶ Understand, then, that the LORD, your God, is God indeed, the faithful God who keeps his merciful covenant down to the thousandth generation toward those who love him and keep his commandments,

또 당신을 미워하는 자에게는 그를 멸망시키시어 직접 갚으신다는 것을 알아야 한다. 그분께서는 당신을 미워하는 자에게 지체 없이 직접 갚으신다.

▶ but who repays with destruction the person who hates him; he does not dally with such a one, but makes him personally pay for it.

그러므로 내가 오늘 너희에게 실천하라고 명령하는 계명과 규정들과 법규들을 너희는 지켜야 한다.

|
▶ You shall therefore carefully observe the commandments, the statutes and the decrees which I enjoin on you today.
|

|
너희가 이 법규들을 들어서 지키고 실천하면, 주 너희 하느님께서도 너희 조상들에게 맹세하신 계약과 자애를 너희에게 지켜 주실 것이다.

|
▶ As your reward for heeding these decrees and observing them carefully, the LORD, your God, will keep with you the merciful covenant which he promised on oath to your fathers.

|
너희를 사랑하시고 너희에게 복을 내리시며 너희를 번성하게 하실 것이다. 또 너희에게 주시겠다고 너희 조상들에게 맹세하신 땅에서, 너희 몸의 소생들과 너희 땅의 열매, 곧 곡식과 포도주와 기름, 그리고 송아지와 새끼 양들에게도 복을 내리시어 불어나게 해 주실 것이다.

▶ He will love and bless and multiply you; he will bless the fruit of your womb and the produce of your soil, your grain and wine and oil, the issue of your herds and the young of your flocks, in the land which he swore to your fathers he would give you.

너희는 어떤 민족보다 복을 더 받아서, 너희에게는 아기를 낳지 못하는 남자도 여자도 없을 것이며, 너희 가축들 가운데에는 새끼를 낳지 못하는 암컷도 수컷도 없을 것이다.

▶ You will be blessed above all peoples; no man or woman among you shall be childless nor shall your livestock be barren.

|
주님께서는 너희에게서 온갖 병을 없애 주실 것이다. 또 너희가 이집트에서 본 온갖 나쁜 질병을 너희에게는 퍼뜨리지 않으실 것이다. 그러나 너희를 미워하는 모든 자에게는 그 질병들을 내리실 것이다.

▶ The LORD will remove all sickness from you; he will not afflict you with any of the malignant diseases that you know from Egypt, but will leave them with all your enemies.

너희는 주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 넘겨주시는 모든 민족들을 없애 버려라. 너희는 그들을 동정해서는 안 된다. 그들의 신들을 섬겨서도 안 된다. 그것은 너희에게 올가미가 될 것이다.

▶ "You shall consume all the nations which the LORD, your God, will deliver up to you. You are not to look on them with pity, lest you be ensnared into serving their gods.

너희 마음속에 ‘이 민족들이 우리보다 수가 많은데, 우리가 어떻게 그들을 내쫓을 수 있겠는가?’ 하는 생각이 들더라도,

▶ Perhaps you will say to yourselves, 'These nations are greater than we. How can we dispossess them?'

너희는 그들을 두려워하지 말고, 주 너희 하느님께서 파라오와 온 이집트에 하신 일을 똑똑히 기억하여라.

|
|
|
▶ But do not be afraid of them. Rather, call to mind what the LORD, your God, did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:
|

|
너희가 두 눈으로 본 큰 재앙들, 그리고 주 너희 하느님께서 표징과 기적들을 일으키시며 강한 손과 뻗은 팔로 너희를 이끌어 내신 것을 기억하여라. 주 너희 하느님께서는 너희가 두려워하는 모든 민족들에게도 그렇게 하실 것이다.

▶ the great testings which your own eyes have seen, the signs and wonders, his strong hand and outstretched arm with which the LORD, your God, brought you out. The same also will he do to all the nations of whom you are now afraid.

게다가 주 너희 하느님께서는 그들 가운데로 계속 말벌을 보내셔서, 살아남은 자들과 너희 앞에서 숨은 자들을 기어이 멸하실 것이다.

▶ Moreover, the LORD, your God, will send hornets among them, until the survivors who have hidden from you are destroyed.

|
위대하고 두려운 하느님이신 주 너희 하느님께서 너희 가운데에 계시니, 너희는 그들을 겁내지 마라.

|
|
▶ Therefore, do not be terrified by them, for the LORD, your God, who is in your midst, is a great and awesome God.

|
주 너희 하느님께서는 그 민족들을 너희 앞에서 조금씩 몰아내실 것이다. 너희는 그들을 단번에 제거하지는 못할 것이다. 그러면 너희가 감당할 수 없을 정도로 들짐승이 많아질 것이기 때문이다.

▶ He will dislodge these nations before you little by little. You cannot exterminate them all at once, lest the wild beasts become too numerous for you.

그러나 주 너희 하느님께서는 그들을 너희에게 넘겨주시고 줄곧 큰 혼란에 빠뜨리시어, 마침내 그들을 멸망시키실 것이다.

▶ The LORD, your God, will deliver them up to you and will rout them utterly until they are annihilated.

|
그분께서는 그들의 임금들을 너희 손에 넘겨주실 것이고, 너희는 하늘 아래에서 그들의 이름을 없애 버릴 것이다. 아무도 너희에게 맞서지 못할 것이며, 너희는 마침내 그들을 멸망시킬 것이다.

▶ He will deliver their kings into your hand, that you may make their names perish from under the heavens. No man will be able to stand up against you, till you have put an end to them.

|
너희는 그들의 신상들을 불에 태워 버려야 한다. 그리고 너희는 그것들 위에 입혀진 은이나 금을 탐내어 너희 것으로 삼지 마라. 그러면 너희가 덫에 걸릴 것이다. 정녕 그런 짓은 주 너희 하느님께 역겨운 짓이다.

▶ The images of their gods you shall destroy by fire. Do not covet the silver or gold on them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared by it; for it is an abomination to the LORD, your God.

역겨운 것을 너희 집에 들여놓아서는 안 된다. 그러면 너희도 그것처럼 전멸할 것이다. 그것은 전멸하게 되어 있는 물건이므로, 너희는 그것을 철저히 혐오하고 역겨워해야 한다.”

▶ You shall not bring any abominable thing into your house, lest you be doomed with it; loathe and abhor it utterly as a thing that is doomed.
