에사르 하똔 시대에 나는 집으로 돌아와 내 아내 안나와 아들 토비야를 되찾게 되었다. 우리의 축제인 오순절 곧 주간절에 나를 위하여 잔치가 벌어져, 나는 음식을 먹으려고 자리에 앉았다.

▶ Thus under King Esarhaddon I returned to my home, and my wife Anna and my son Tobiah were restored to me. Then on our festival of Pentecost, the feast of Weeks, a fine dinner was prepared for me, and I reclined to eat.

내 앞에 상이 놓이고 요리가 풍성하게 차려졌다. 그때에 내가 아들 토비야에게 말하였다. “얘야, 가서 니네베로 끌려온 우리 동포들 가운데에서 마음을 다하여 주님을 잊지 않는 가난한 이들을 보는 대로 데려오너라. 내가 그들과 함께 음식을 먹으려고 그런다. 얘야, 네가 돌아올 때까지 기다리마.”

▶ The table was set for me, and when many different dishes were placed before me, I said to my son Tobiah: "My son, go out and try to find a poor man from among our kinsmen exiled here in Nineveh. If he is a sincere worshiper of God, bring him back with you, so that he can share this meal with me. Indeed, son, I shall wait for you to come back."

그래서 토비야가 우리 동포들 가운데 가난한 사람들을 찾으러 나갔다. 그가 돌아와서 “아버지!” 하고 불렀다. 내가 “얘야, 나 여기 있다.” 하고 대답하자 그가 계속 말하였다. “아버지, 누가 우리 백성 가운데 한 사람을 살해하여 장터에 던져 버렸습니다. 목 졸려 죽은 채 지금도 그대로 있습니다.”

▶ Tobiah went out to look for some poor kinsman of ours. When he returned he exclaimed, "Father!" I said to him, "What is it, son?" He answered, "Father, one of our people has been murdered! His body lies in the market place where he was just strangled!"

나는 잔치 음식을 맛보지도 않고 그대로 둔 채 벌떡 일어나 그 주검을 광장에서 날라다가, 해가 진 다음에 묻으려고 어떤 방에 놓아두었다.

▶ I sprang to my feet, leaving the dinner untouched; and I carried the dead man from the street and put him in one of the rooms, so that I might bury him after sunset.

그때에 아모스 예언자가 베텔을 두고 한 말씀이 생각났다. “너희의 축제들은 슬픔으로, 너희의 모든 노래는 애가로 바뀌리라.”

▶ I was reminded of the oracle pronounced by the prophet Amos against Bethel: "Your festivals shall be turned into mourning, And all your songs into lamentation."

▶ And I wept. Then at sunset I went out, dug a grave, and buried him.

이웃들은 나를 비웃으며 이렇게 말하였다. “저 사람이 이제는 두렵지가 않은 모양이지? 전에도 저런 일 때문에 사형감으로 수배되어 달아난 적이 있는데, 또 저렇게 죽은 이들을 묻는구먼.”

▶ The neighbors mocked me, saying to one another: "Will this man never learn! Once before he was hunted down for execution because of this very thing; yet now that he has escaped, here he is again burying the dead!"

그날 밤 나는 몸을 씻고 내 집 마당에 들어가 담 옆에서 잠을 잤는데, 무더워서 얼굴을 가리지 않았다.

▶ That same night I bathed, and went to sleep next to the wall of my courtyard. Because of the heat I left my face uncovered.

내 머리 위 담에 참새들이 있다는 것을 나는 알지 못하였다. 그때에 뜨거운 참새 똥이 내 두 눈에 떨어지더니 하얀 막이 생기는 것이었다. 그래서 치료를 받으려고 여러 의사에게 가 보았지만, 그들이 약을 바르면 바를수록 그 하얀 막 때문에 눈이 더 멀어졌다. 그러더니 마침내는 아주 멀어 버렸다. 나는 네 해 동안 시력을 잃은 채 지냈다. 내 친척들이 모두 나 때문에 슬퍼하고, 아키카르는 엘리마이스로 갈 때까지 나를 두 해 동안 돌보아 주었다.

▶ I did not know there were birds perched on the wall above me, till their warm droppings settled in my eyes, causing cataracts. I went to see some doctors for a cure, but the more they anointed my eyes with various salves, the worse the cataracts became, until I could see no more. For four years I was deprived of eyesight, and all my kinsmen were grieved at my condition. Ahiqar, however, took care of me for two years, until he left for Elymais.

▶ At that time my wife Anna worked for hire at weaving cloth, the kind of work women do.

아내가 물건을 만들어 주인들에게 보내면 주인들이 품삯을 주곤 하였다. 디스트로스 달 초이렛날에 아내는 자기가 짜던 옷감을 잘라서 주인들에게 보냈다. 그러자 그들은 품삯을 다 줄 뿐만 아니라 집에서 쓰라고 새끼 염소 한 마리도 주었다.

▶ When she sent back the goods to their owners, they would pay her. Late in winter she finished the cloth and sent it back to the owners. They paid her the full salary, and also gave her a young goat for the table.

내가 있는 곳으로 아내가 들어올 때에 그 새끼 염소가 울기 시작하였다. 그래서 내가 아내를 불러 말하였다. “그 새끼 염소는 어디서 난 거요? 혹시 훔친 것 아니오? 주인들한테 돌려주시오. 우리에게는 훔친 것을 먹을 권리가 없소.”

▶ On entering my house the goat began to bleat. I called to my wife and said: "Where did this goat come from? Perhaps it was stolen! Give it back to its owners; we have no right to eat stolen food!"

아내가 나에게 “이것은 품삯 외에 선물로 받은 것이에요.” 하고 말하였지만, 나는 아내를 믿지 못하여 그 새끼 염소를 주인들에게 돌려주라고 다시 말하면서, 그 일로 아내에게 얼굴을 붉혔다. 그러자 아내가 말하였다. “당신의 그 자선들로 얻은 게 뭐죠? 당신의 그 선행들로 얻은 게 뭐죠? 그것으로 당신이 무엇을 얻었는지 다들 알고 있어요.”

▶ But she said to me, "It was given to me as a bonus over and above my wages." Yet I would not believe her, and told her to give it back to its owners. I became very angry with her over this. So she retorted: "Where are your charitable deeds now? Where are your virtuous acts? See! Your true character is finally showing itself!"
