The men of Ephraim gathered together and crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, "Why do you go on to fight with the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house over you."

▶ 에프라임 사람들이 동원되었다. 그들은 차폰으로 건너가서 입타에게 말하였다. “너는 왜 암몬 자손들과 싸우러 건너갈 때에, 같이 가자고 우리를 부르지 않았느냐? 네 집을 너와 함께 불태워 버리겠다.”

Jephthah answered them, "My soldiers and I were engaged in a critical contest with the Ammonites. I summoned you, but you did not rescue me from their power.

▶ 그러자 입타가 그들에게 대답하였다. “나는 내 백성과 더불어 암몬 자손들과 격렬한 논쟁을 벌이면서 그대들을 소집하였소. 그러나 그대들은 나를 그들의 손에서 구해 주지 않았소.

When I saw that you would not effect a rescue, I took my life in my own hand and went on to the Ammonites, and the LORD delivered them into my power. Why, then, do you come up against me this day to fight with me?"

▶ 그대들이 구해 주지 않는 것을 본 나는, 목숨을 걸고 암몬 자손들이 있는 곳으로 건너갔소. 그랬더니 주님께서 그들을 내 손에 넘겨주셨소. 그런데 그대들은 어찌하여 오늘 이렇게 올라와서 나와 싸우려 드는 것이오?”

Then Jephthah called together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim, whom they defeated; for the Ephraimites had said, "You of Gilead are Ephraimite fugitives in territory belonging to Ephraim and Manasseh."

▶ 그러고 나서 입타는 길앗 사람들을 모두 모아 에프라임인들과 싸웠다. 길앗 사람들은 에프라임인들이 평소에, “너희는 에프라임에서 도망간 자들이다. 길앗은 에프라임과 므나쎄 한가운데에 있는 것이나 마찬가지다.” 하고 말하였기 때문에 그들을 쳐 죽였다.

The Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan toward Ephraim. When any of the fleeing Ephraimites said, "Let me pass," the men of Gilead would say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he answered, "No!"

▶ 그리고 길앗인들은 에프라임으로 가는 요르단 건널목들을 점령하였다. 도망가는 에프라임인들이 “강을 건너게 해 주시오.” 하면, 길앗 사람들은 그에게 “너는 에프라임인이냐?” 하고 물었다. 그가 “아니요.” 하고 대답하면,

they would ask him to say "Shibboleth." If he said "Sibboleth," not being able to give the proper pronunciation, they would seize him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. Thus forty-two thousand Ephraimites fell at that time.

▶ 그에게 “‘쉬뽈렛’ 하고 말해 봐.” 하였다. 그 사람이 제대로 발음하지 못하여 ‘시뽈렛’이라고 하면, 그를 붙들어 그 요르단 건널목에서 죽였다. 이렇게 하여 그때에 에프라임에서 사만 이천 명이 죽었다.

After having judged Israel for six years, Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.
