야곱의 몸에서 난 이들은 모두 일흔 명이었는데, 그 가운데 요셉은 이미 이집트에 가 있었다.

▶ The total number of the direct descendants of Jacob was seventy. Joseph was already in Egypt.

▶ Now Joseph and all his brothers and that whole generation died.

그러나 이스라엘 자손들은 자식을 많이 낳고 늘어만 갔다. 그들은 번성하고 더욱더 강해졌다. 그리하여 그 땅이 이스라엘 자손들로 가득 찼다.

▶ But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific. They became so numerous and strong that the land was filled with them.

그런데 요셉을 알지 못하는 새 임금이 이집트에 군림하게 되었다.

▶ Then a new king, who knew nothing of Joseph came to power in Egypt.

그가 자기 백성에게 말하였다. “보아라, 이스라엘 백성이 우리보다 더 많고 강해졌다.

▶ He said to his subjects, "Look how numerous and powerful the Israelite people are growing, more so than we ourselves!

|
그러니 우리는 그들을 지혜롭게 다루어야 할 것이다. 그러지 않으면 그들이 더욱 번성할 것이고, 전쟁이라도 일어나면, 그들은 우리 원수들 편에 붙어 우리에게 맞서 싸우다 이 땅에서 떠나가 버릴 것이다.”

▶ Come, let us deal shrewdly with them to stop their increase; otherwise, in time of war they too may join our enemies to fight against us, and so leave our country."

그래서 이집트인들은 강제 노동으로 그들을 억압하려고 그들 위에 부역 감독들을 세웠다. 그렇게 하여 이스라엘 백성은 파라오의 양식을 저장하는 성읍, 곧 피톰과 라메세스를 짓게 되었다.

▶ Accordingly, taskmasters were set over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. Thus they had to build for Pharaoh the supply cities of Pithom and Raamses.

그러나 그들은 억압을 받을수록 더욱 번성하고 더욱 널리 퍼져 나갔다. 이집트인들은 이스라엘 자손들을 두려워하게 되었다.

▶ Yet the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread. The Egyptians, then, dreaded the Israelites

▶ and reduced them to cruel slavery,

▶ making life bitter for them with hard work in mortar and brick and all kinds of field work - the whole cruel fate of slaves.

|
이집트 임금이 히브리 산파들에게 말하였다. 그들 가운데 한 여자의 이름은 시프라였고 다른 여자의 이름은 푸아였다.

▶ The king of Egypt told the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was called Shiphrah and the other Puah,

그가 말하였다. “너희는 히브리 여자들이 해산하는 것을 도와줄 때, 밑을 보고 아들이거든 죽여 버리고 딸이거든 살려 두어라.”

|
|
|
▶ When you act as midwives for the Hebrew women and see them giving birth, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she may live."

그러나 산파들은 하느님을 경외하는 마음에서, 이집트 임금이 그들에게 분부한 대로 하지 않고 사내아이들을 살려 주었다.

▶ The midwives, however, feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt had ordered them, but let the boys live.
|

이집트 임금이 산파들을 불러, “너희는 왜 그런 짓을 하였느냐? 왜 사내아이들을 살려 주었느냐?” 하고 묻자,

▶ So the king summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you acted thus, allowing the boys to live?"

산파들이 파라오에게 대답하였다. “히브리 여자들은 이집트 여자들과는 달리 기운이 좋아, 산파가 가기도 전에 아기를 낳아 버립니다.”

▶ The midwives answered Pharaoh, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. They are robust and give birth before the midwife arrives."
|

|
이에 하느님께서 산파들을 잘 돌보아 주셨다. 이스라엘 백성은 번성하여 더욱 강해졌다.

|
▶ Therefore God dealt well with the midwives. The people, too, increased and grew strong.
|
|

|
산파들이 하느님을 경외하였기 때문에, 하느님께서는 그들의 집안을 일으켜 주셨다.

|
|
|
▶ And because the midwives feared God, he built up families for them.
|
|
22
|
마침내 파라오가 온 백성에게 명령하였다. “히브리인들에게서 태어나는 아들은 모두 강에 던져 버리고, 딸은 모두 살려 두어라.”

▶ Pharaoh then commanded all his subjects, "Throw into the river every boy that is born to the Hebrews, but you may let all the girls live."
