The Israelites offended the LORD, who therefore delivered them into the power of Midian for seven years,

▶ 이스라엘 자손들이 다시 주님의 눈에 거슬리는 악한 짓을 저질렀다. 그리하여 주님께서는 그들을 일곱 해 동안 미디안족의 손에 넘겨 버리셨다.

so that Midian held Israel subject. For fear of Midian the Israelites established the fire signals on the mountains, the caves for refuge, and the strongholds.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 미디안족의 세력이 이스라엘을 억누르자, 이스라엘 자손들은 미디안족을 피하여 산에다 은신처와 동굴과 그 밖에 접근하기 어려운 곳들을 마련하였다.

And it used to be that when the Israelites had completed their sowing, Midian, Amalek and the Kedemites would come up,

|
|
▶ 이스라엘인들이 씨를 뿌려 놓으면, 미디안족과 아말렉족과 동방인들이 올라오곤 하였다. 그들이 그렇게 쳐 올라오곤 하였다.

encamp opposite them, and destroy the produce of the land as far as the outskirts of Gaza, leaving no sustenance in Israel, nor sheep, oxen or asses.
|

|
|
|
▶ 그들은 이스라엘인들 곁에 진을 치고서는, 가자 어귀에 이르기까지 땅의 소출을 망쳐 놓아, 이스라엘에 양식을 하나도 남기지 않았다. 양도 소도 나귀도 마찬가지였다.

For they would come up with their livestock, and their tents would become as numerous as locusts; and neither they nor their camels could be numbered, when they came into the land to lay it waste.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 그들이 천막까지 챙겨서 가축 떼를 몰고 올라오는데 메뚜기 떼같이 많았다. 사람이고 낙타고 그 수를 셀 수가 없었다. 그들은 이렇게 와서 이 땅을 황폐하게 만들곤 하였다.

Thus was Israel reduced to misery by Midian, and so the Israelites cried out to the LORD.
|

|
|
|
▶ 그래서 이스라엘은 미디안 때문에 큰 곤궁에 빠졌다. 마침내 이스라엘 자손들이 주님께 부르짖었다.

When Israel cried out to the LORD because of Midian,
|

|
|
|
▶ 이스라엘 자손들이 미디안 때문에 주님께 부르짖자,

|
he sent a prophet to the Israelites who said to them, "The LORD, the God of Israel, says: I led you up from Egypt; I brought you out of the place of slavery.

▶ 주님께서 예언자 한 사람을 이스라엘 자손들에게 보내셨다. 그가 이스라엘 자손들에게 말하였다. “주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. ‘내가 너희를 이집트에서 데리고 올라왔다. 너희를 종살이하던 집에서 끌어내었다.

I rescued you from the power of Egypt and of all your other oppressors. I drove them out before you and gave you their land.
|

|
|
▶ 내가 이집트의 손에서, 너희를 억압하는 모든 사람의 손에서 너희를 구하였다. 또 그들을 너희 앞에서 몰아내고 그 땅을 너희에게 주었다.

And I said to you: I, the LORD, am your God; you shall not venerate the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are dwelling. But you did not obey me."
|

|
▶ 그러면서 나는 너희에게 말하였다. ′나는 주 너희 하느님이다. 너희가 아모리족의 땅에 산다고 해서 그 신들을 경외해서는 안 된다.′ 그러나 너희는 내 말을 듣지 않았다.’”

Then the angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. While his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press to save it from the Midianites,

▶ 주님의 천사가 아비에제르 사람 요아스의 땅 오프라에 있는 향엽나무 아래에 와서 앉았다. 그때에 요아스의 아들 기드온은 미디안족의 눈을 피해 밀을 감추어 두려고, 포도 확에서 밀 이삭을 떨고 있었다.

the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said, "The LORD is with you, O champion!"

|
▶ 주님의 천사가 그에게 나타나서, “힘센 용사야, 주님께서 너와 함께 계시다.” 하고 말하였다.

|
"My Lord," Gideon said to him, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are his wondrous deeds of which our fathers told us when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' For now the LORD has abandoned us and has delivered us into the power of Midian."
|

▶ 그러자 기드온이 천사에게 물었다. “나리, 외람된 말씀입니다만, 주님께서 저희와 함께 계시다면, 어째서 저희가 이 모든 일을 겪고 있단 말입니까? 저희 조상들이 ‘주님께서 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 올라오지 않으셨더냐?’ 하며 이야기한 주님의 그 놀라운 일들은 다 어디에 있습니까? 지금은 주님께서 저희를 버리셨습니다. 저희를 미디안의 손아귀에 넘겨 버리셨습니다.”

The LORD turned to him and said, "Go with the strength you have and save Israel from the power of Midian. It is I who send you."
|

|
▶ 주님께서 기드온에게 돌아서서 말씀하셨다. “너의 그 힘을 지니고 가서 이스라엘을 미디안족의 손아귀에서 구원하여라. 바로 내가 너를 보낸다.”

|
But he answered him, "Please, my lord, how can I save Israel? My family is the meanest in Manasseh, and I am the most insignificant in my father's house."
|

|
▶ 그러자 기드온이 말하였다. “나리, 외람된 말씀입니다만, 제가 어떻게 이스라엘을 구원할 수 있단 말입니까? 보십시오, 저의 씨족은 므나쎄 지파에서 가장 약합니다. 또 저는 제 아버지 집안에서 가장 보잘것없는 자입니다.”

"I shall be with you," the LORD said to him, "and you will cut down Midian to the last man."
|

|
▶ 그러나 주님께서는, “내가 정녕 너와 함께 있겠다. 그리하여 너는 마치 한 사람을 치듯 미디안족을 칠 것이다.” 하고 말씀하셨다.

He answered him, "If I find favor with you, give me a sign that you are speaking with me.
|

|
|
|
▶ 그러자 기드온이 또 말하였다. “참으로 저에게 호의를 베풀어 주신다면, 저와 이 말씀을 하시는 분이 당신이시라는 표징을 보여 주십시오.
|
|

|
Do not depart from here, I pray you, until I come back to you and bring out my offering and set it before you." He answered, "I will await your return."

|
|
|
|
▶ 제가 예물을 꺼내다가 당신 앞에 놓을 터이니, 제가 올 때까지 이곳을 떠나지 마십시오.” 이에 주님께서, “네가 돌아올 때까지 그대로 머물러 있겠다.” 하고 대답하셨다.

|
So Gideon went off and prepared a kid and an ephah of flour in the form of unleavened cakes. Putting the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, he brought them out to him under the terebinth and presented them.

|
|
▶ 기드온은 가서 새끼 염소 한 마리를 잡고 밀가루 한 에파로 누룩 없는 빵을 만들었다. 그리고 고기는 광주리에, 국물은 냄비에 담아 가지고 향엽나무 아래에 있는 그분께 내다 바쳤다.

The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and unleavened cakes and lay them on this rock; then pour out the broth." When he had done so,

|
|
|
▶ 그러자 하느님의 천사가 그에게 말하였다. “고기와 누룩 없는 빵을 가져다가 이 바위 위에 놓고 국물을 그 위에 부어라.” 기드온이 그렇게 하였더니,

the angel of the LORD stretched out the tip of the staff he held, and touched the meat and unleavened cakes. Thereupon a fire came up from the rock which consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and the angel of the LORD disappeared from sight.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 주님의 천사가 손에 든 지팡이를 내밀어, 그 끝을 고기와 누룩 없는 빵에 대었다. 그러자 그 큰 돌에서 불이 나와 고기와 누룩 없는 빵을 삼켜 버렸다. 그리고 주님의 천사는 그의 눈에서 사라졌다.

Gideon, now aware that it had been the angel of the LORD, said, "Alas, Lord GOD, that I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!"

|
▶ 그제야 기드온은 그가 주님의 천사였다는 것을 알고 말하였다. “아, 주 하느님, 제가 이렇게 얼굴을 맞대고 주님의 천사를 뵈었군요!”

The LORD answered him, "Be calm, do not fear. You shall not die."
|
성경 ▼
|
|
|
|
|
▶ 그러자 주님께서 그에게, “안심하여라. 두려워하지 마라. 너는 죽지 않는다.” 하고 말씀하셨다.
|
|

|
So Gideon built there an altar to the LORD and called it Yahweh-shalom. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 그래서 기드온은 그곳에 주님을 위하여 제단을 쌓고, 그 이름을 ‘주님은 평화’라고 하였다. 그 제단은 오늘날까지 아비에제르 사람들에게 속한 오프라에 서 있다.

That same night the LORD said to him, "Take the seven-year-old spare bullock and destroy your father's altar to Baal and cut down the sacred pole that is by it.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 그날 밤에 주님께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. "네 아버지의 황소, 곧 일곱 살 된 둘째 황소를 끌어오너라. 그러고 나서 네 아버지의 바알 제단을 허물고, 그 곁에 있는 아세라 목상을 잘라 버려라.

|
You shall build, instead, the proper kind of altar to the LORD, your God, on top of this stronghold. Then take the spare bullock and offer it as a holocaust on the wood from the sacred pole you have cut down."
|

|
|
|
▶ 그런 다음, 이 요새 꼭대기에 주 너의 하느님을 위하여 합당한 순서에 따라 제단을 쌓고, 그 둘째 황소를 끌어다가, 네가 잘라 버린 아세라 목상의 나무로 불살라 번제물로 바쳐라.”

|
So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had commanded him. But through fear of his family and of the townspeople, he would not do it by day, but did it at night.
|

|
|
▶ 기드온은 종들 가운데 열 사람을 데리고, 주님께서 이르신 대로 하였다. 그러나 아버지 집안 사람들과 성읍 사람들이 두려워, 그 일을 낮에 하지 못하고 밤에 하였다.

|
Early the next morning the townspeople found that the altar of Baal had been destroyed, the sacred pole near it cut down, and the spare bullock offered on the altar that was built.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 이튿날 아침 일찍 성읍 사람들이 일어나 보니, 바알 제단이 헐리고 그 곁에 서 있던 아세라 목상이 잘렸으며, 새로 쌓은 제단 위에서는 둘째 황소가 바쳐지고 있었다.

|
They asked one another, "Who did this?" Their inquiry led them to the conclusion that Gideon, son of Joash, had done it.
|

|
|
|
|
|
▶ 그들은 “누가 이런 짓을 하였나?” 하고 서로 물었다. 그들은 조사하고 캐물은 끝에, “요아스의 아들 기드온이 이런 짓을 하였다.” 하고 말하였다.

|
So the townspeople said to Joash, "Bring out your son that he may die, for he has destroyed the altar of Baal and has cut down the sacred pole that was near it."
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 그리하여 성읍 사람들이 요아스에게, “그대의 아들을 끌어내시오. 그는 죽어 마땅하오. 그가 바알 제단을 헐고 그 곁에 서 있던 아세라 목상을 잘라 버렸소.” 하였다.

|
But Joash replied to all who were standing around him, "Do you intend to act in Baal's stead, or be his champion? If anyone acts for him, he shall be put to death by morning. If he whose altar has been destroyed is a god, let him act for himself!"
|

|
|
|
▶ 그러자 요아스가 둘레에 선 모든 이에게 말하였다. “그대들은 바알을 옹호하는 거요? 그대들이 바알을 구원할 수라도 있다는 말이오? 바알을 옹호하는 자는 내일 아침까지 죽음을 면치 못할 것이오. 자기 제단이 헐렸으니, 바알이 신이라면 자신을 직접 옹호해 보라고 하시오.”

|
So on that day Gideon was called Jerubbaal, because of the words, "Let Baal take action against him, since he destroyed his altar."
|

|
|
▶ 그날 기드온은 여루빠알이라는 이름을 얻었다. 그것은 ‘그가 바알의 제단을 헐었으니, 바알은 그에게 맞서 자신을 옹호하라.’는 뜻이다.

|
Then all Midian and Amalek and the Kedemites mustered and crossed over into the valley of Jezreel, where they encamped.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 그때에 온 미디안족과 아말렉족과 동방인들이 함께 모여, 강을 건너와 이즈르엘 평야에 진을 쳤다.
|
|

|
The spirit of the LORD enveloped Gideon; he blew the horn that summoned Abiezer to follow him.
|

|
|
|
|
|
▶ 그러자 주님의 영이 기드온을 사로잡았다. 그리하여 기드온은 나팔을 불어 자기를 따르라고 아비에제르 사람들을 소집하였다.

|
He sent messengers, too, throughout Manasseh, which also obeyed his summons; through Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, likewise, he sent messengers and these tribes advanced to meet the others.
|

|
|
▶ 그는 또 전령들을 온 므나쎄 땅으로 보내어 그들도 자기를 따르도록 소집하였다. 아세르와 즈불룬과 납탈리에도 전령들을 보내니 그들도 적에게 맞서려고 올라왔다.

Gideon said to God, "If indeed you are going to save Israel through me, as you promised,

|
▶ 기드온이 하느님께 아뢰었다. “이미 이르신 대로 저를 통하여 이스라엘을 구원하시렵니까?
|
|

|
I am putting this woolen fleece on the threshing floor. If dew comes on the fleece alone, while all the ground is dry, I shall know that you will save Israel through me, as you promised."
|

|
|
|
|
|
▶ 그렇다면 제가 타작마당에 양털 뭉치 하나를 놓아두겠습니다. 이슬이 그 뭉치에만 내리고 다른 땅은 모두 말라 있으면, 이미 이르신 대로 저를 통하여 이스라엘을 구원하시는 줄로 알겠습니다.”

|
That is what took place. Early the next morning he wrung the dew from the fleece, squeezing out of it a bowlful of water.
|

|
|
▶ 그러자 정말 그렇게 되었다. 기드온이 다음 날 아침 일찍 일어나 양털 뭉치를 짜자, 그 뭉치에서 물이 한 대접 가득히 나왔다.

Gideon then said to God, "Do not be angry with me if I speak once more. Let me make just one more test with the fleece. Let the fleece alone be dry, but let there be dew on all the ground."
|

|
|
|
▶ 기드온이 다시 하느님께 아뢰었다. “제가 한 번 더 아뢴다고 노여워하지 마십시오. 이 양털 뭉치로 한 번만 더 시험해 보게 해 주십시오. 이 뭉치만 말라 있고 다른 땅에는 이슬이 내리게 해 주십시오.”

That night God did so; the fleece alone was dry, but there was dew on all the ground.
|

|
▶ 하느님께서는 그날 밤에도 그대로 해 주셨다. 그 뭉치만 말라 있고 다른 땅에는 이슬이 내렸던 것이다.
|
